Traditional UCS Architecture

Limitations

• Limited Scalability• Increased Latency• Inefficient Resource Usage

Ref :http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/junos11.4/topics/concept/qfabric-overview.html

Qfabric Basic Principle

• Flat architecture• Offers scale and flexibility• Entire system managed as single entity• Separation of Control and data plane

Components of Qfabric

• Node device• Interconnect Device• Director device• Controlplane switches

Nodedevices

• Connection to server nodes, storage nodes or external network

• Similar to TOR switches in traditional datacenters

Node Groups

• Server Node Group: – Connects to Server– Runs host facing protocol : LACP, LLDP, ARP

• Redundant Server Node Group:– Connects to Server and runs LACP, LLDP, ARP– Used for resilience ( runs BPDU guard and storm control)

• Network Node Group– Runs L2 and L3 protocols(STP, OSPF, BGP)– Typically connects to routers, switches and firewalls

Page 9: Cloudstack Meetup T opic : Juniper Qfabric in Lab

Interconnect Devices

• Connects all the Node Devices• Data traffic sent between node devices travels

through Interconnect devices.

Director Devices

• Used to manage, monitor and maintain the Qfabric system.

• Connected in pair to form Director Group• Each device runs Juniper OS.

Control Plane Switches

• Supports control plane network which facilitates the control and management communication

• Separate from the data plane• Discovery, route management, exchange

reachability information happen over control plane.

Connections

• Control Plane Connection:– Node Device <=> EX switch– Director Device <=> EX Switch– Interconnect <=> Ex Switch

• Data Plane Connections:– Interconnect <=> Node Device [ 40Gb QSFP+ fabric

uplink ports]– Node Device <=> System End points [ Supports several

options 1GbE, 10 GbE, 2,4,8 Gb FC]Ref : http://www.juniper.net/us/en/local/pdf/whitepapers/2000443-en.pdf

DG Routing Engines• Fabric Manager Routing Engine– Discovers and provisions system components– Discovers and calculates paths between ND’s– Creates and maintains db of system components

• NNG Routing Engine– Performs routing operations

• Fabric Control Routing Engine– Distributes routing information through Fabric Control

Protocol(based on BGP).
