CLOSING THE SAFETY GAP

What does “Closing the Gap” mean?

• If one were to look back at the various accidents that have occurred at Oncor, or accidents that happen more frequently, there is likely a “Gap” that can be identified.

• The “Gap” could be related to training, awareness, equipment failure, use of PPE, technique, or many others.

What if?

• What if, before the next preventable incident occurs, we can identify those areas of potential gaps, share these around the company, so that we all can work safer?

THE EFFORT STARTS WITH EMPLOYEES

Seeking Input

• To identify situations where safety incidents could occur.• To address those situations to prevent safety incidents.• To share potential gaps with our co-workers around the company.

Your Point of View is Important

• The best safety ideas come from the those who are involved daily in the work.

• We will only improve our safety performance if we all work together to close the safety gaps.

• We have the opportunity to greatly reduce injuries, and feedback is the foundation of that effort.

GAP EXAMPLES

• Ergonomics - Not using proper body mechanics when performing a task.

• Falling Objects - Not using a handline when working aloft.

• Technique / Tool Usage - Improper use and/or using a tool not suitable for the task being performed.

• PPE - Incorrect PPE for a task.

• Grounding - Not using an approved grounding device.

• Poles - Not surveying the situation before climbing.

NEXT STEPS

Close the Gap Feedback

• As a means of introducing Close the Gap to our employees, brainstorm sessions were scheduled for the first two weeks of the year seeking employee input on potential “Gaps”.

• Managers compiled feedback and sent to the Safety, Health and Mutual Assistance organization for review.

• A summary of feedback was presented at the T&D Annual Safety Conferences.

Future

• Based on feedback, action items are being developed for discussion and application. Additional employee feedback sessions may occur as well.

• Share the feedback with your Manager.

• “Maintain a positive safety attitude.” “Create a culture wherein an employee never feels uncomfortable about getting help or asking for advice.”

• “Don’t allow yourself to believe that just because you have done something many times and not had an accident, it’s OK to keep doing it that way.”

• “Identify all hazards when you arrive on the job site.” “Check poles for conditions, stability for climbing.”

• “We must … look out for each other.” “Being your Brother’s Keeper should not be just for your crew.” “Take ownership of things that you find broken or misplaced.” “You can’t learn your Safety Handbook on Monday morning only. You have to study it by yourself.”
