• Read the passage and questions before starting

• Note the number of marks for and type of each question

• Questions will be directed (the exact lines to look at) so make sure you only use the stated lines

• Note if you are asked for a WORD or PHRASE or to USE OWN WORDS

• Know the difference between U and A

• Analysis will always mean a comment on a technique or way of writing.

• Sometimes you are asked to quote so use inverted commas.

Sentence Construction

• Know the purpose of the sentence – statement, question, command, surprise

• Notice anything different from the usual – lack of a verb, repetition, varying word order

• Identify PARENTHESIS and ELLIPSIS

• Know all punctuation marks and why they are used. You should then be able to work out what effect is achieved by using them.

• Identify lists and know what effect is achieved by using a list – emphasis, tone, momentum, to imply lots.

• Look for an unusual use of punctuation.

Analysis of Language

• Know the FIGURES of SPEECH – METAPHOR, SIMILE, ALLITERATION, ONOMATOPOEIA, PERSONIFICATION, ASSONANCE, HYPERBOLE also COLLOQUIALLISM

• Be aware of the repetition of sound especially “s” (sibilance)

• Identify the TONE created by language-• IRONIC, DISBELIEF, EMOTIVE,

ARGUMENTATIVE, PERSUASIVE, HUMEROUS

Linking Question

• Be able to identify this type of question

• Look for “signpost words” – but, however, yet, on the other hand, surely

• Identify the common thread between the previous paragraph and the one identified. Summarise the point being made and show how it is then continued in next paragraph. (Note it may change direction.)
