Close Encounters with the Holy OrdersBy: Susan Amoroso

Lunches with Pope John Paul II! Even got kissed on the forehead and held both hands with him like a loving father. The Pope even gave her a special message for the Filipino people: the Philippines is blessed by God with two very important things: richness of faith and closeness of the family.

Of all the cardinals in the Vatican during the time of Pope John Paul II, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was considered the most scholarly and most forbidding. But the Cardinal now Pope Benedict XVI proved her wrong. He understood her trepidation and made her at ease during their first official meeting . He even extended the 15-minute time allotted.

Ambassador Henrietta `Tita’ de Villa recalls as she remembers with fondness her days in Rome as Philippine Ambassador to the Vatican during the time of Pope John Paul II. The late Pope who visited the country twice is considered by many as the most beloved Pope of the Filipino people, a sentiment genuinely reciprocated.

Last September 15, 2012, the St. Andrew Parish Youth Ministry attended the Makti District Youth Ministry (MDYM) Formation for the September Youth Month with the theme “EVANGELIZATION AND THE YOUTH: Spreading God’s Words in the Modern World” which was held at the San Carlos Seminary auditorium. The event was attended by Youth members from the different vicariates of Makati District.

It started with an enjoyable and energetic Praise and Worship that made everyone dance and shout praises to the Lord that we felt the loving presence of our Almighty Father. Kuya Drich Baltazar, Assistant coordinator of MDYM, welcomed the guest speaker, no other than our very own Ate Karen Ann Phoa, ICCom head of the SAAP-PYM.

Bringing with her a treasure trove of close encounters with the Vatican and the clergy , the lady ambassador both regaled and entertained, and at the same time impacted in her talk `` Communicating the Faith with Commitment, Confidence, and Credibility.’’

The following are vignettes of wisdom she shared with lay leaders of the St. Andrew the Apostle Parish:

“The Pope (Pope Benedict XVI) is worried. Faith does not seem to matter anymore ( to us Catholics). The faith is not only being taken for granted but being denied.”

“Every morning you should inhale (ru) into yourself the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and exhale (wu) the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit into your surrounding”.

“ Redicover the Church as a mother welcoming us from which all graces flow.”

``The Pope Benedict XVI understands what love is and wants this love to be communicated by the Church. You have to love in order to believe and vice versa.”

“When you have goodness, you can not just keep it in your heart.”

“When God calls you, He will accompany and lavish us with all the gifts to bear abundant fruits.”

“ In any little struggle God will retrofit us.”

“God made man unto His own image and likeness. We have that as-built plan within all of us”.

“ St. Ignatius teaches us to examine our conscience. Am I still looking like as my as-built plan? Are we still in the image and likeness of Christ?”

“Do not be vain, selfish and proud. Think of others first. We bear the name of Christ.”

“ Being Christ to others , so others my become Christ to others too.”

“ Pope John Paul II said on talking about his 1996 visit to the Philippines, “I have never seen so many people in a single event. I replied, “ Visit us again and you will see twice as many.’’

“ The Filipino migrant workers (OFWs) are not only heroes. They are the new evangelists of the Catholic faith.”

“Do not take sitting down when our God is profaned and blasphemed. Show that we are hurt. This is what we believe in. This is our faith.’’

“Let us examine if we are progressing in our journey of faith.”

“The Church must be experienced as mother and teacher. A welcoming mother first, then as a teacher.”

“For each one of us is an as-built plan, imbed in each one of us is God’s own image and likeness.”

“Jesus is in constant prayer to His Father. Prayer is His food and drink.

“ Pray to stay on course, to go back on course.”

“Prayer is our lifeline to our origin of our image and likeness.”

“Practice our faith in our unproclaimed lives.”

“The Pope is concerned that the Church has become to most of us outdated and archaic. It does not speak our language anymore.”

The Porta Fidei (door of faith) welcomes us into re-entry into the Church from which all graces flow. “

“Your belief and your hope will also attract others to your belief and your hope.’’

Ate Karen explained to us the different kinds of evangelization which made everyone understand its true essence for the Youth nowadays. She also shared about the “Three-Filter Test” of Socrates, which awakened us in knowing what to say and what not to say especially now that the world is improving in terms of technology that we can post or tweet anytime and anywhere. She also emphasized the various social networking sites used by most of us and how we can use these sites as means of evangelizing other people. We can use them in good ways, not only for fun and relaxation but also to evangelize those people that doesn’t know anything or unaware about God. We learned that by using these social networking sites responsibly and wisely, we can become examples and guides to other young people of our generation.
