EXPEDITION LEADERS

Our team of expert leaders and lecturers serves to bring a comprehensive educational component to your adventure through lectures, guided excursions, and daily recaps.

Lia Oprea (Expedition Leader) – Part Romanian, Lia gives credit to her Gypsy heritage for her peripatetic nature and love of exploration. Th is love led her to travel widely around the globe and, quite naturally, to a career in adventure travel, a trade she has plied for more than a dozen years. During this time she has worked in several capacities, including cruise director and expedition leader, and has traveled throughout much of the world.

Jack Grove – A marine biologist, professional naturalist, and cofounder of Zegrahm Expeditions, Jack is a leading authority on the fi shes and marine environments of the eastern tropical Pacifi c. In 1997 Stanford University Press published his comprehensive volume, e Fishes of the Galápagos Islands, and he received his Ph.D. from Pacifi c Western University. An avid scuba diver, certifi ed dive master, and Fellow of Th e Explorers Club, Jack has led numerous expeditions to the remote corners of the world.

Mark Brazil – Mark developed his fascination with the natural world, especially birds, during his boyhood in the landlocked English county of Worcestershire. He earned his Ph.D. from Stirling University, Scotland, for his work on avian ecology and behavior in Iceland. His work as a fi eld naturalist, author, researcher, and guide has taken him to every continent. He is the author of several ornithological books and the leading authority on the natural history of Japan.

Susan B.M. Langley – Susan is the State Underwater Archaeologist for Maryland. She received her B.A. in anthropology from the University of Toronto, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in archae-ology from the University of Calgary. She is an Adjunct professor at both St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University where she teaches Maritime Archaeology and the History of Piracy. She is also an active Master Scuba Diver Trainer through PADI and serves as the State’s Dive Safety Offi cer.

Michael Moore – A Chicago native, Mike earned both his B.S. in biology and an M.S. degree in ecology, ethology, and evolution at the University of Illinois. Since then he has spent 10 years conducting research around the Pacifi c Rim, where he lived in the highlands of New Guinea, logged hundreds of hours beneath its waters working for conservation organizations, and taught fi eld biology courses for the University of PNG. Mike’s research around the world led him to a career as an expedition leader taking travelers from the equatorial forests of New Guinea to Alaska’s arctic tundra and many places in between.

Rich Pagen – Rich fi rst became enthralled by the wonders of the natural world around the tide pools and forests of his native New York. After such fi eld biology projects as surveys for mammalian carnivores in the mountains of California, bird migration monitoring in Canada, and a study of army-ant-following birds in the Peruvian Amazon, Rich was drawn back to the sea where he taught marine science and island ecology on Catalina Island in California for several years. He has also conducted shipboard surveys for marine mammals and seabirds, as well as tagging studies of sea turtles and pelagic sharks.

Ron Wixman – Ron is a specialist in world cultural geography and is well-versed in both the ancient and modern societies of Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East. Ron recently retired from the University of Oregon where he taught courses on the rise of cultures and civilization, traditional ways of life, food culture and cuisine, and geopolitics in the Middle East, in the Geography Department. He is also a specialist on general issues of religion, culture, and ethnicity around the world.
