Kaitlyn Ketelsen is in her fourth year of studying at Wartburg College, and will graduate in December with a degree in communications. She has lived in DeWitt her whole life, and enjoys being able to come home for her summer breaks. She is excited to be working for the Extension Office this summer, and was happy to find a local job where her talents can be put to good use. In her spare time she likes to bake, photo-graph her friends and family, run, and work on design and DIY projects. Her dream job after graduation would involve marketing, designing, and event planning.

Lexi Delaney is from DeWitt, Iowa and will be the 2015 4-H Summer Assistant for Clinton County Extension and Outreach. Lexi is going to be a sophomore at Iowa State University majoring in Animal Science and Agriculture Communications. Lexi says that “4-H and FFA are much more than presenting your projects at the fair. These organizations teach skills to youth that are valuable all throughout life. I learned responsibility, work ethic, record keeping, and communication skills throughout 4-H. Looking back now, I have realized how important these skills are for our future generations. I look forward to helping the youth gain skills and memories that will last them a lifetime.”

Rising Star Interns—Clinton & Muscatine Counties
If you did not make FSQA training in Clinton County and you still need to be certified, there is one more training offered in Jackson County. If you are in grades 7-12 you have the option to take a test instead of attending training.
If you want to test out, please call the Extension Office to make arrangements to take the test. Jackson County- Monday, June 8, 2-4pm, Pearson Hall, 563-652-4923 * You must RSVP at the number above if you are planning to attend.
More FSQA information and the FSQA manual may be found at: www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/livestock/FSQA.htm ***Those who do not RSVP to the county extension office are not allowed to complete the training.
Cierra is a fourth year design student at Iowa State University and is serving Clinton and Muscatine counties as a Rising Star Intern. Her studies focus on graphic design, info graphics, and design thinking and solving. Cierra is most excited about getting to go to the many farmers markets this summer and getting to work with man agers in designing new logos, banners, and promotional material. Cierra has a passion to better communities and will use her design skills to do just that.
Courtney is a recent graduate from Iowa State's College of Human Sciences with a degree in Nutrition. This summer she is serving Muscatine county as their Rising Star intern. Courtney’s hope is to promote overall health in the community by tackling barriers of food insecurity, and helping create new food policies. Her future career goal is to work in an atmosphere similar to extension, while promoting healthy environments to the community and prevention of diseases that are caused by lack of nutrition and knowledge of health.
MISSION STATEMENT
Empower youth to reach their full potential through youth adult
partnerships and research-based experiences.
The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced an order to cancel all live bird exhibitions at county fairs, the Iowa State Fair, and other gatherings of birds due to avian influenza. The Department’s order begins immediately, is effective through the end of 2015, and also prohibits live birds from being sold at livestock auction markets, swap meets and exotic sales. http://www.extension.iastate.edu/article/exhibitions-birds-cancelled-2015-due-avian-influenza
In place of the poultry show, we have decided to create a new class for poultry project members. This class will allow members to showcase their knowledge about birds without actually bringing the bird(s) to the fair. The class will be judged based on knowledge and creativity. Exhibitors must create a display focused on a poultry related topic, such as bird breeds, avian flu, bird care, etc. We encourage you to take a picture of your bird(s) and display them, such as setting up a cage/display with a replica of your bird(s). More information will be available soon.

Iowa State Fair Entry Deadline—July 1
Club Show Entries in Fair Entry Online Program—June 23
MISSION STATEMENT
Empower youth to reach their full potential through youth adult
partnerships and research-based experiences.
4-H exhibitors are required to submit Iowa State Fair Livestock entries by July 1. This year, state fair entries must be submitted using the Fair Entry online program, similarly to how county fair entries are being submitted online through
the program. You will be given instructions regarding how to
make state fair livestock entries in early June. You will be
using Fair Entry, but the instructions for submitting state fair
entries are slightly different than for county fair entries.
Clinton County is no longer using a class entry form to submit Club Show entries for livestock and non-livestock. Exhibitors are required to submit class entries for livestock by June 23using the online Fair Entry program. Instructions were mailed to each family mid-May and are also available at the Clinton County Extension website and are included on page 8 in this newsletter.
Please use your Club Show Fair book to find class numbers and descriptions. Fair book may be found at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/clinton/ Each family will receive a fair book at their next club meeting.

Often, we get “ideas” by observation of other’s works of art, crafts, recipes, etc. It is very important to give credit to those individuals or companies who have created materials, resources, logos, trademarks, photographs, etc. that you may want to incorporate into your 4-H project exhibited at county fair. You must request and be granted permission in order to use someone else’s material.
For more information, regarding copyright use guidelines for 4-H projects, go to: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/clinton/page/projects

Graduating Seniors
Design Elements & Art Principles for 4-H Projects
Congratulations to all of the 2015 graduating seniors! Thank you for being positive role models in 4-H and in your community. We wish you the best luck in all that you do! Please plan on attending the Senior Recognition Ceremony at the Clinton County Club Show on Friday, July 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Beef Arena.
*You will be receiving a questionnaire in the mail to be returned to the Extension Office. Please let Brianne Johnson know if you are not able to attend by calling the Extension Office or by emailing [email protected].
Design Elements
Line can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, or curved.
Lines can vary in thickness or help create a mood.
Shapes are made from connected lines. How they
are arranged determines the design. They can be
geometric or organic.
Color is described with the words hue, value, and
intensity. Hues are names of colors. Value is light-
ness or darkness of a hue. Intensity refers to the
brightness or dullness of a hue. Light,
intermediate, and dark values define parts of
objects and set off one area of a design from
another.
Texture is a surface characteristic that can be
touched or seen. Contrasting textures add
interest.
Space is divided into negative and positive areas.
Art Principles
Rhythm is organized movement. Repeating an ele-
ment (i.e. lines) will produce rhythm.
Proportion compares the amount, size, or
number.
Emphasis captures your attention by unusual use of
line, shape, texture, space, or value.
Balance gives a design stability.
Radial balance -- same around a center point;
Asymmetrical balance -- dissimilar;
Bisymmetrical balance -- same on both sides.
Unity is the union of the elements in a design.
***Please check out the 2015 Clinton
County Club Show Fair book for design elements and art
principles.
