This year, the European Society for Clinical Cell Analy-sis (ESCCA) organized its 9th Euroconference on ClinicalCell Analysis in conjunction with its 5th European Clini-cal Cytometry Course in St. Etienne, France. As on Sep-tember 1, 220 paying participants had signed up for the3-day conference and 196 for one of the four 2-daycourses, respectively. For the latter, four topics wereoffered from which the participants had to choose inadvance: leukemia; immunophenotyping of special sam-ples; immunology; and platelets. The organization of theEuroconference was similar as in previous years, i.e.,invited oral presentations and proferred, peer-reviewedabstracts. Most invited abstracts and selected proferredabstracts that have been shown as posters during theconference are shown in this issue of Clinical Cytome-
try; an overview is shown in Table 1. From 2005onward, the Euroconferences make use of a so-calledinteractive voting system (IVS) that enable the partici-pants to cast their votes on statements and questionsprepared by the moderators of specific sessions. Thisyear, the IVS served to structure the debate on standardi-zation of diagnosis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobin-uria, and the results of this debate will be publishedshortly (Drenou et al., in preparation).
ESCCA gratefully acknowledges the contributions ofMaria Arroz (course coordinator, 2005–2009), David Bar-
nett (ESCCA chairman, 2007–2009), and Gregor Rothe(conference chairman, 2008). They retire as per agree-ment in September 2009. The remaining board mem-bers, i.e., Bruno Brando (secretary, 2006–2009; ESCCAchairman from 2009 onward), Jan Gratama (treasurer),and Stefano Papa (past president) will be joined byHans-Jurgen Hoffmann, Claude Lambert, Janos Kappel-mayer, Claudio Ortolani, Katherina Psarra, and UlrichSack. Both the 6th European Clinical Cytometry Courseand the 10th Euroconference on Clinical Cell Analysiswill be held in Valencia (E), i.e., from September 21 to22, 2010 (course) and from September 23 to 25, 2009(conference), under the chairmanship of Jose EnriqueO’Connor. For details see www.cytometry2010.eu.
As a scientific organizing committee, we are verypleased for the financial support of our 28 industrialpartners and, for travel support of our US faculty at the5th Course, the Clinical Cytometry Foundation (North-brook, IL). In particular, we are very grateful to the Clin-ical Cytometry Society (CCS) and the Clinical
Cytometry journal to publish the abstracts of the Confer-ence. The fact that the abstracts from both the 24thClinical Cytometry Meeting (CCS) and the 9th Eurocon-ference (ESCCA) are published in the same issue of Clin-ical Cytometry reflects the intensification of thecollaboration between the two societies.
