2013 PRIZE WINNERS
Fondation Bettencourt Schueller
27-29 rue des Poissonniers • 92200 Neuilly-sur-Seine • France
www.fondationbs.org • Contact: [email protected]
Now in its 13th year, the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation “Prix
coups d’élan pour la recherche française” has been awarded to four
top-performing French laboratories.
The prize rewards teams specifically chosen for the promising nature
of their research programs. It enables them to optimize their infras-
tructure (construction / renovation of their premises, the purchasing
of new equipment) and to receive practical assistance when required.
From the year 2000 onwards, 46 research laboratories, from both
the Inserm (FrenchNational Institute of Health andMedical Research)
and the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), have
received € 250,000 each. As a direct result, over 500 researchers
have been able to benefit from optimal physical working conditions.
Recognised in 1987 as a public interest foundation, the Bettencourt
Schueller Foundation was set up by Liliane, André Bettencourt and
their daughter Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, in memory of Eugène
Schueller, a renowned researcher and chemist. Its goal is to constantly
expand the boundaries of knowledge in the life sciences in order to
improve public health; to reveal talent and pass on expertise within
the field of artistic creativity; and to relieve suffering, combat exclusion
and respond to social welfare emergencies.

2 mL DEEP-WELL PLATE
The first 96 round deep-well plate that genuinely delivers 2 mL liquid ca-
pacity/well in an automation compatible SLAS/ANSI footprint. The revo-
lutionary ìcommon wallî design provides a full 2 mL round well with a
round bottom within a 45 mm height limit, thus ensuring full compatibility
with most plate handling equipment. Unlike other 2 mL deep-well plates
that typically offer just 1.80ñ1.90 mL/well, the new Porvair plate enables
labs involved with fraction collecting, compound storage, plate replica-
tion, and mixing applications the chance to use the full 2 mL well capacity
without compromise. Manufactured under Class 10,000 conditions from
ultrapure grade polypropylene, Porvairís new 2 mL 96 deep-well plates are
certified as RNase/DNase free and contain no measurable contaminants
that could otherwise leach out and affect the sample. For sterile biological
applications, Porvair 2 mL 96 deep-well plates are available irradiated.

DIGITAL SENSORS
The UniCond 4-E digital sensors are four-electrode sensors designed to
provide highly accurate measurement across a very wide range: a single
UniCond 4-E measures from pure potable water to acid or base concen-
trations. Applications for the UniCond 4-E series include Clean-in-Place
and desalination processes, deionization regeneration, industrial process-
ing, and wastewater treatment. Analog conductivity sensors are prone to
signal degradation caused by sensor-to-transmitter cable resistance and ca-
pacitance. Technology incorporated into the UniCond sensors that convert
the analog signal into a robust and reliable digital signal solves this issue. In
addition, the sensors contain Mettler Toledoís Intelligent Sensor Manage-
ment (ISM) concept. Features of ISM include Plug and Measure start up at
the measurement point and sensor diagnostics for proactive maintenance.
In addition, the UniCond 4-E can be calibrated without extraction from the
process. This makes the sensors compliant with United States Pharmacopeia
(USP) guidelines.

ULTRA X-RAY MICROSCOPE
The new X-ray microscopy (XRM) solution increases throughput for 3-D imaging at the nanoscale, by up to 10
times. Using a series of technical innovations to achieve better contrast, and in turn faster acquisition, the new
Xradia 810 Ultra revolutionizes the X-ray imaging model in scientific and industrial research labs worldwide.
Xradia 810 Ultra operates at 5.4 keV, a lower X-ray energy that delivers better contrast and image quality for
many materials. Contrast improves significantly as these lower-energy X-rays are absorbed more strongly,
enabling high-quality tomographies to be completed at vastly reduced imaging times. The Xradia 810 Ultraís
architecture was engineered around this new source energy, using innovative optics to extend the capabilities
of the Xradia Ultra family, the only lab-based nondestructive imaging solutions to achieve resolution down
to 50 nm. Additionally, Xradia 810 Ultra leverages both absorption and Zernike phase contrast and advanced
optics adapted from the synchrotron to deliver industry-leading resolution and contrast.

FLUORESCENCE CELL COUNTER
The next generation automated cell counter, Luna-FL, is a breakthrough for
life science researchers. By integrating dual fluorescence and bright field
optics in one instrument, the Luna-FL provides researchers with maximum
flexibility for cell counting without being limited by cell type. Researchers
are rapidly moving from using glass hemocytometers to using automated
cell counters. Various automated cell counters are available, but many of
these instruments are not flexible or accurate enough to accommodate
a wide range of cell types. Traditionally, primary cells such as peripheral
blood mononucleated cells, splenocytes, and yeast cells have been dif-
ficult to count using conventional automated cell counters. The Luna-FL
fluorescence cell counter is more compact and considerably less expensive
compared with the other fluorescence cell counters currently available. The
Luna-FL features dual fluorescence optics for sensitive cell analysis, trypan
blue stained cell counting with bright field optics, GFP expression analysis,
cell size gating, and an interactive user interface.

MICROPLATE HOTEL
The new microplate hotel is for use with the CompacT SelecT automated
cell culture system and is compatible with LiCONiC plate incubators. It al-
lows users to transfer entire stacks of plates between the CompacT SelecT
and LiCONiC incubator-based screening systems, thus saving scientistsí
time and improving the efficiency of supplying consistent quality cells to
increase throughput in cell-based screening operations. The new microplate
hotel, developed in conjunction with LiCONiC AG, is compatible with
their STR incubator range. This ensures researchers can significantly reduce
plate transfer times and reduce the risks associated with manual plate relo-
cations. The addition of the new LiCONiC-compatible plate hotel extends
the functionality of CompacT SelecT to provide fully automated aseptic
cell culture processing for a continuous supply of consistent quality cells,
thereby increasing productivity in cell-based screening programs.
