What is a biome and where in the world are they found?

Key Knowledge:

Biomes are located around the world

Biomes are large regions of the world that because of a similar climate, have similar plants and animals

The same biomes can be found within different continents

There is a clear link between climate zones and biomes

Key Vocabulary:

Biome

Flora

Fauna

Tundra

Boreal Forest

Deciduous Forest

Tropical Rainforest

Grassland

This half term, all of your Geography learning will be working towards you being able to answer this question:

Your five weeks of learning will look like this:

Discussion

Do you think the same plants and animals can be found worldwide? How might the climate zone influence the types of plants and animals?

Page 7: Climate Zones and Biomes presentation week 2.pdfmap. Complete the ‘Biome’ column in the table on page 10. • The tundra biome can be found in the very north of North America •

What are biomes?

The simplest way to describe biomes is:

‘Biomes are areas of the world that share a similar climate and because of that climate they are home to similar plants and animals. Those plants and animals have adapted to live in there’.

So the same biome can be found in different parts of the world but those parts of the world have a similar climate and therefore similar plants and animals.

This is the name of our unit, so it’s a very important word to remember…

What do we mean by flora and fauna?

• The word flora is used to describe the plant life found in a particular place.

Example: “The flora of a desert biome are plants that need little or no water.”

• The word fauna is used to describe the animal life found in a particular place.

Example: “The fauna of a rainforest biome is reptiles, mammals and birds.”

Task: Complete the definitions for ‘flora’ and ‘fauna’ in the table on page 9.

What are the different biomes?

There are many different views on the different biomes of the world and where they are located but we are going to use and learn about the following:

1) Tropical Rainforest2) Deciduous Forest3) Boreal Forest4) Tundra5) Grassland

6) Polar7) Savannah8) Chaparral9) Desert

Where are the different biomes located?

Task: Use these clues below to identify the colour of each biome on the map. Complete the ‘Biome’ column in the table on page 10.

• The tundra biome can be found in the very north of North America

• The desert biome can be found across a large area of northern Africa

• The deciduous forest biome covers all of the United Kingdom• The tropical rainforest biome is found along the equator• The boreal forests are only found in the northern hemisphere• The savannah biome can be found in the north of South America• The chaparral biome can be found in places like Greece

Why are some biomes found in more than one climate zone?

There is a clear link between biomes and climate zones but some biomes are located in more than one climate zone.

This can be confusing but biomes can also be influenced by the type of soil, how close they are to the sea or how close they are to the centre of a large land mass and also by how high or low the level of the land is.

Paragraph 1- What is a climate zone and what is a biome?

Paragraph 2- What is the link between the climate zones and a biome? What is similar and different?

Paragraph 3- Can you give examples of any biomes and climate zones that are similar and different?

Task: “What is the link between climate zones and biomes?” – Page 13

This task is optional. It would be lovely to see some writing though to show the link though.
