Clifton Avenue acts as a physical barrier to Burnet Woods, the university, and surrounding neighborhoods. Our mission is to use the principles of balance, safety, and eco-design to improve Clifton Avenue and blend the natural and built environments. This streetscape proposal transforms the street from an automobile dominated corridor into a multi-modal public space that is self-sustaining and manages the street’s stormwater runoff through green infrastructure design. A sense of comfort is created using traffic calming design - slowing down motorist and creating a pleasant streetscape experience for all users.
ECO-DESIGN
BALANCE
SAFETY
Creating balance on Clifton Avenue to accommodate all forms of transportation; including automobiles, pedestrians, and cyclists. The proposed design utilizes widened sidewalks, bike lanes, two lanes of traffic in each direction, and a parking lane.
Creating a safe environment for all modes of transportation is extremely important. The proposed design utilizes traffic calming infrastructure to slow down motorist. This includes a raised median, slim car lanes, curb extensions, brick crosswalks, and widened buffer space between all users.
With eco-design, our goals are to extend the natural environment of the park into the street, to effectively manage the stormwater runoff, and reduce the street’s carbon footprint and urban heat island effect. The proposed design utilizes stormwater infiltration trenches, bioswales, tree wells, rain gardens, and large urban street trees.

Our proposal for Clifton Ave. includes widened sidewalks, contra-flow bike lanes, green infrastructure, a median, parking along the east side of the street, and streetscape improvements - brick pavers, historic street lamps and fencing. The final design was selected as the best choice through a design analysis and rating process.

The Clifton Avenue Streetscape Master Plan incorporates our long term vision for the corridor. With current development trends in the surrounding neighborhoods, we anticipate new mixed-use development in addition to our multi-modal streetscape plan.
The intention behind creating a plaza crosswalk in the middle of Clifton Ave. is to create much needed public space along the Clifton corridor, while creating a crosswalk that diverts motorist traffic naturally, without the need for a traffic signal. A brick paved crosswalk, speed tables, and forced diversion around the plaza space achieve the design intention, as well as creating an aesthetic gateway to the proposed restaurant.
