• What is a Fraction• Practice counting Fractions• Fraction of a whole: game• Numerator and Denominator• Adding Fractions• Subtracting Fractions
What is a fraction?
• It is a part of a whole:
= A whole bar = 1 A complete bar
= 1/2 of the bar is yellow
= 1/3 of the bar is yellow.1/3 of the bar is red.1/3 of the bar is blue.
= 1/2 of the bar is blue
There are 4 parts to this whole bar.
• 1/4 of the bar is yellow and• 3/4 of the bar is blue.
More Fractions: count how many bars there are across each row and that will give you how many parts there are in the whole bar. Each part counts as 1 section of the whole
bar!
1/10 1/10 1/10 1/101/10 1/10 1/101/101/10 1/10
1/7 1/7 1/7 1/7 1/7 1/7 1/7
1/5 1/5 1/5
1/3 1/3 1/3
1/1
1/5 1/5
Identifying parts of the fraction
• The top # in the fraction is called a numerator, and the bottom of the fraction is called a denominator.
• Example: 3/4, 3 is on top, it is the numerator4 is on bottom, it is the denominator.
(helpful hint: I know d is the first letter in down, this tells me the denominator is the number on the bottom)
Identifying Fraction Parts
• Now you click on the correct answer to these questions.
1. What number in the fraction 4/5 is the denominator?10 6 3 5
2. What number in the fraction 4/5 is the numerator?44 55 1010 66
More of the numerator and denominator
• Identify the numerator in 3/9.3 9 8 39
• Identify the denominator in 5/8.5 8 4 58
• Identify the denominator in 2/3.2 3 4 23
Fraction of a whole: Now you try and see if you can give me the correct answer to these problems! Use your mouse to click on the correct answer!
1. How many parts are there in this whole bar? 6 10 5 82. What fraction is colored yellow? (hint, how
many parts of the whole)2/5 4/5 5/5 1/2
Lets try another problem!
1. How many parts are there in the whole bar?9 11 8 5
2 What fractions are colored in yellow?1/8 5/8 8/8 3/8
Your doing great! How about this problem?
1. What fraction of the bar is yellow?1/7 3/5 2/6 2/7
2. What fraction of the bar is red?3/7 0/7 7/7 1/7
3. What fraction of the bar is blue? 1 5/7 4/4 2/7
This one is a little tricky!1. What fraction of the bars are
yellow? (hint: this whole bar has 2 rows)0/10 5/10 10/10 4/10
2. What fraction of the bars are blue?6/10 1/10 5/10 10
One more and you can go practice on the internet!
1. What fraction of the bar is yellow?6/6 6 1 1/6
2. What fraction of the bar is red?2 2/2 21 2/6
3. What fraction of the bar is blue?3 6 33 3/6
Adding Fractions:• Adding fractions is very easy. Just take
the numerator (Top number or first number) and add them together, and keep the denominator (or second number) the same!
Example: 1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5¼ + ¼ = 2/41/6 + 4/6 = 5/6
Now you try this practice worksheet on a piece of paper and click on the word answer when you are done!
1. 1/8 + 1/8 =2. 2/6 + 3/6 =3. 1/3 + 1/3 =4. 5/9 + 1/9 =5. 1/7 +2/7 =answers
ANSWERS TO ADDITION
1. 1/8 + 1/8 = 2/82. 2/6 + 3/6 = 5/63. 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/34. 5/9 + 1/9 = 6/95. 1/7 + 2/7 = 3/7
SUBTRATING FRACTIONS
• Subtracting fractions are just as easy as adding. Just subtract the numerator (top or first numbers), and keep the denominator the same (bottom or second numbers).
Example: 4/5 – 1/5 = 3/53/6 – 2/6 = 1/66/8 – 2/8 = 4/8
Now you try this practice on a piece of paper and when you are done click on answers to check your
answers!
1. 4/4 – 1/4 =2. 5/6 – 2/6 =3. 8/9 – 1/9 =4. 5/7 – 2/7 =5. 4/5 – 1/5 =answer
ANSWERS TO SUBTRACTION
1. 4/4 – 1/4 = 3/42. 5/6 – 2/6 = 3/63. 8/9 – 1/9 = 7/94. 5/7 – 2/7 = 3/75. 4/5 – 1/5 = 3/5CONGRATULATIONS, GO TO THE
