He was part of the republican party. His nickname was Honest Abe. About Abe Return Home Slide 5 He passed the emancipation proclamation. It was the important first step in freeing the slaves. He wanted the country to be one again and thought that all people should be free. Abes Thoughts on Slavery Slide 6 He made a speech called the Gettysburg Address It was made in Gettysburg Pennsylvania, where a large Civil War battle had been fought Lincoln talked about the importance of keeping the United States together. Gettysburg Address Slide 7 He was born 1809 in a one room log cabin in Kentucky. He and his family were farmers, and he worked on the farm. His family moved to Indiana for better land. Home Life Slide 8 Abe didnt go to school much because he had to work on the farm. He loved to read. He read a lot of law books and became a lawyer. Abe always loved our country. Abes schoolwork Slide 9 President Lincoln was assassinated (killed) shortly after his reelection. He was killed in a theatre by a man named John Wilkes Booth. The Lincoln Memorial was built in his honor after his death. You can visit it in Washington DC. What Happened to Abe? Slide 10 Ways we Remember Abe Lincolns picture is on our 5 dollar bill. His picture is also on our penny. He is on Mt. Rushmore. We celebrate him on Presidents day. Slide 11 Lincoln did not like slavery before becoming president.
