Republicans in House Vow to Defeat OWI's Plea for $5,C 13,000 St the Associated Press.
* House Republicans trained their guns today on'one of their
favorite administration targets, the Office of War Information, with the avowed intention of
denying its request for more funds.
Representative Taber, New York, ranking Republican member of the Appropriations Committee, said he would offer an amendment to strike a $5,000,000 OWI sum from the $215,368,444 supplemental appropria- tion bill.
Republican colleagues joined Mr. Taber yesterday in denouncing the agency and some of its foreign propaganda activities, but drew prompt and heated defenses from Democrats.
"We will knock out the $5,000,000 if the members show up today,” Mr.
I Taber confidently told reporters. “We have the votes.”
The New Yorker summed up the Republican view of OWI by ac-
cusing it of having given aid to a fourth-term movement.
OWI officials termed “mad non- sense” accusations by Representa- tive Bennett, Republican, of Mis- souri that the agency was distrib- uting lapel pins and magazines overseas to promoted President Roosevelt for “first President of the United Nations.”
Mr. Bennett said pins bearing the President’s picture have been dis- tributed through American soldiers to citizens of other countries and Insisted they were being used to1
foster "a fourth term among our troops.”
He asserted the agency also put out a picture magazine “devoted exclusively to promoting the politi- cal fortunes of the perpetual candi- date for re-election to the presi- dency.”
An OWI official said 37,000 clips with Mr. Roosevelt’s picture on one side and the American Flag on the other were distributed in the Near East last year, but declared Mr. Roosevelt’s likeness was used be- muse he is President of the United j States and his office is a symbol of this Nation.
If any American soldiers obtained he pins, he said, they must have 1
gotten them from natives—they wern’t distributed through the Army.
Chairman Cannon of the commit- tee yesterday cited testimony of Army and Navy officials commend- ing OWI for assistance in prepar- ing the way for the invasion of Italy through its foreign propa- ganda activities.
’’If this money’s denied, men must die,’’ Mr. Cannon told the House.

Appeals Court Refuses To Act in Demotion Case
The Court of Appeals has refused to issue an injunction to prevent the Commissioners from demoting Rob- ert J. Maghan, jr., from detective sergeant to a private in the Metro- politan Police Department.
The court had been asked to take action to prevent any possible ehange in the officer's status pend- ing a hearing on a final Injunction set for Monday In District Court.
The appellate court expressed the Dpinion that it should not issue an Injunction while the application for
a permanent Injunction is still pend- ing in District Court, adding:
"When a final disposition of the matter is had in the District Court, and an appeal taken to this court, there will be time to apply for the relief now sought.”

move to maintain proper facilities for civilian dental care. The new order is an amendment to an order issued January 20 for fulfilling of Army and Navy needs on dental supplies.
