Shake up for surfactants
The global market for surfactants is at12 M tonnes, with specialitysurfactants accounting for about 4 Mtonnes. Growth rates of between zeroand 1.5% are seen in the maturemarkets of North America, WesternEurope and Japan. Polarization isexpected to continue in the industry, with classifications into global, principally bulk surfactant suppliersand smaller specialized performancesurfactant producers. The Pacific Asiaregion and other areas of thedeveloping world, such as those inLatin America, may provide the majorgrowth opportunities. The new EUDetergents Directive that will beenforced by the middle of 2005requires all surfactants types utilizedin detergents to be readilybiodegradable. Replacement ofcurrent materials and development ofnew products will be propelled by theincreasing health, safety andenvironment legislation and voluntaryagreements.
