Cleanliness in IslamIslam plays a great emphasis on cleanliness, both in physical and spiritual aspects. Physical aspect :- Islam requires the Muslim to clean his body, clothes, house and the whole community and he is rewarded by God for doing so. Prophet Mohammed ( P.B.U.H ) said Removing any harm from the road is charity ( that will be rewarded by Allah ) Body CleanlinessBodys cleanliness means that it should be free from all impurities ( Najaasat ), which are of two types:Visible impurities ( Hqeeqat ) like : Urine, faeces, blood, or wine Invisible impurities ( Hukmi ) which are again of two types :-a) Lesser type or minor uncleanliness known as Hadath Asghar in such case Wudhoo ( Ablution ) is requiredb) Major uncleanliness known as Hadath Akbar and Janabat . In most cases, this can be eliminated by bathing ( GHUSUL )Cutting the hairA Muslim should do five general things with regard to cleanliness :-1) Cutting of nails2) Removal of hair under armpit3) Removal of hair below navel4) Circumcision5) Cutting of moustacheCleanliness of the ClothesFor our Emaan to be half complete, is it enough to wear clean clothes ? And do we have a clean body ?NO !!! It does include many other thingsIn the hadith the actual word used in Arabic is Tahara which means Purity . And by purity or Tahara, we learn in two directions :-i) Inner Taharaii) Outer TaharaTahara ( Purity )Inner Tahara, can be achieved by upholding the Five Pillars of Islam, having clean and pure thinking process, avoiding sins, making a lot of dikar and especially making sure the heart is pure of spiritual maladies such as anger, hatred, relying on other than Allah, fear of loss of provision, antipathy toward death, pride, arrogance, etcOuter Tahar, can be attained by proper bodily purification. E.g : making Wudhoo ( Ablution ), taking bath, cleaning teeth, using fragrance or perfumes, keeping house and clothes clean, etc.The importance of CleanlinessIslam greatly approves cleanliness. According to the Holy Quran, Allah loves those that turn to Him in repentance and purify themselves ( 2:222 ).When person rules out his mistakes and to the path of truth, this is called an act of repentance. As such, it purifies mans inner self. Just as by using water we can cleanse the dirt from the body, so by repentance, we can purify the soul the inner-self. That is why Islam lays great stress on both these things.PURITY IS HALF OF FAITH !!! God is Clean and loves Cleanliness ( Ibn Majah ) Cleanliness in generalCleaning and grooming of the body.Protection against diseases and infections of all kind.Public health includes all actions taken to maintain and improve the general health of a community.
