The EWaterfront is a term used to indicate focus on holistic planning for the waterfront and local waterways. By some industry estimates there are as many as 18,000waterfront sites which service recreational boating. 12-14,000 existing sites, and 4,000 sites under development,repair or permitting. Currently, clean marina designationscomprise less than 8% of all sites.

National Sporting Goods Association - participating inboating was the fastest growing outdoor activity in 2006

Marine Industries Association of Florida - Florida's marineindustry has an outstanding average growth rate of 24.8%annually over the last 25 years.

The first Clean Marina program was implemented inAnnapolis, Maryland in 1998

Marine Industries Association of Florida - Florida's marineindustry represents a total economic output of over $18.4billion.

Marine Industries Association of Florida - Florida'srecreational boating industry economic impact is greaterthan the citrus and cruise ship industries combined.

Throughout the last twenty years, marinas have becomefamily destinations and influence the total waterfrontenvironment. Restaurants, marine shops, clubhouses,boat drystack -- all affect the operation of clean marinas.

Waterfront development is site specific. Lake operationsdiffer from saltwater locations. Clean water issues in thewestern U.S. may not be the same as those in the Gulf ofMexico, or along the eastern shore.

Clean marina commitments help reach beyond clean waterprograms. In over 19 states and nearly 1,000 waterfrontsites, marinas are premier locations for waterway educationand community involvement.

State Clean Marina Programs and International Standardsprovide guidelines and templates to develop Best ManagementPractices. These standards reach beyond what is required bylaw and help implement recognized leadership.

The primary focus of these programs is toward "effectiveimplementation of the environmental management system andon environmental performances, not on a complex documentcontrol systems." (International Standards Organization 14001)
