Clean air at ThyssenKrupp

Steel is by far the most important indus-trial material and Duisburg something like the European capital of steel production. At the confluence of the Ruhr and Rhine rivers, Germany’s largest steel Group, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG, operates Europe’s largest integrated steel mill. Nearly 12 million metric tons of crude steel are produced each year, and Viledon® ensures the cleanliness of the air.

In the Hamborn district of Duisburg, Germany, two huge blast furnaces are in constant action. In nearby Schwelgern, there are two more – both over twice the size of their neighbours. Every day, for over 100 years, iron-oxide-containing ores with coke and coal dust are reduced to metallic iron and smelted. Iron produc-tion has a long tradition here.

Today, ThyssenKrupp is among the glob-al technology leaders in top-quality flat steel production. The company is also uncompromising when it comes to air filtra-tion. For over 20 years, Freudenberg’s Viledon® filters have been efficiently protecting both men and machinery in the two plants.

Solutions from Freudenberg Filtration Technologies provide excellent service for ThyssenKrupp in a variety of applica-tions. Our T 60 compact pocket filters are used in turbo air compressors throughout the Duisburg plant, as well as in all the Hamborn blast furnaces.

EU designates 2013 as the “Year of Air”Air filters protect against dangerous fine dusts

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG is a business unit of ThyssenKrupp AG. With approximately 28,000 employees and annual revenues of almost 11 billion Euros, it is Germany’s largest steel group. The company focuses on the premium flat-steel market segment. Services range from intelligent material solutions, product-specific processing and a comprehensive service offering, right through to finished steel parts and assemblies.

The EU has designated 2013 as the “Year of Air”. Stricter laws will be intro-duced in an effort to reduce air pollution. The protection of people against airborne pollutants has been one of Freuden berg’s core activities for decades. Today, it has become more relevant than ever. As life expectancy increases, people in indus-trialized countries are living longer and experts from many disciplines are turning their attention to how we can maintain our quality of life into old age. A central theme in the field of healthcare is to reduce our exposure to harmful particulate matter. Freudenberg Filtration Technologies is among the global pioneers in this area.

We recognized the dangers of particulate matter at an early stage and have consis-tently developed effective solutions for the

filtration of fine particles – both for air filtration in large buildings as well as in private homes. It is especially the smallest particles that provide the greatest threat. Due to their low weight, tiny particles of less than 2.5 microns (0.0025 millimeter) diameter do not break down immediately after emission, but float in the air and accumulate in a negative way. They are so small that they pass through the nose and throat, directly into the lungs, where they are deposited.

As far back as 2005, the World Health Organization rated the impact of par-ticulate emissions as “dramatic”. They were identified as being responsible for shortened life expectancy in people with high exposure to ultra-fine dusts. For 2020, the WHO forecast that fine dusts

would cause the deaths of 48,000 people in Germany alone. By comparison, in Germany in 2008, 43,000 people died from tobacco-related causes, more than 70,000 as a result of alcohol abuse, 1,400 from illegal drugs and 4,500 as a result of traffic accidents.

In Schwelgern, our T 60 compact pocket filters protected the sensitive turbine blades during a cold wind generation trial deployment. 20 to 80 Viledon® filters were used for each filter stage. Previously, two filter stages were installed in some plants, some of these with roll filter as the first stage.

ThyssenKrupp are impressed with the performance and qual-ity of Viledon® filters: “Viledon® filters have no difficulty handling the extreme conditions found in our blast furnaces. They have consistently demonstrated a long service life with low pressure drop. We have never experienced any problems with Freudenberg products during the filtration process”, said Karl-Heinz Stroncik, Senior Engineer at ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG’s Hamborn blast furnace. Viledon® T 60 compact pocket filters also achieve a Class A energy efficiency rating, reducing energy costs at ThyssenKrupp and helping to decrease CO₂ emissions.

With the decreasing particle size of fine dusts, the risk of cancer increases, regardless of the chemical composition of the particles. This is the result of a 2008 study conducted by the German Federal Office for Occupational Health and Safety. Findings of this kind clearly demonstrate the importance and value of preserving clean air.

According to a German Federal Statistical Office announcement of October 2012, newborn girls can expect to live for an average of almost 83 years; boys were given a life expectancy of almost 78 years.

In 2011, a demographic report from the EU Commission and the European Statistical Office showed the proportion of over 65 years old people in Germany to be 20.7 percent. By 2060, this figure is expected to increase to 33 percent.

The Swiss Air Force uses Viledon® cooltexx filter material as a so-called “high-altitude filter” to collect aerosol samples for radioactivity measurement. To this end, the filters are mounted on the wings of two Northrop F5 Tiger jets of the type known from the Hollywood movie “Top Gun”. At altitudes of up to 12,000 meters and at speeds up to Mach 0.8, knowledge is gathered about the country’s current exposure to radiation. In this unique application, the filters deliver top performance.

The pilot can open and close the col-lecting devices during flight to control the sampling process. During an aver-age flight time of 20 to 30 minutes, 2,000 – 4,000 kg of air is collected. This Swiss operational concept involves six collection flights per year.

AEO-F certificate: extremely trustworthy

novatexx – more art than nonwoven

Freudenberg Filtration Technologies has designed the processes along the entire supply chain, from manufacturer to end-user, to be extremely secure and efficient. This has now been recognized by the award of AEO-F certificates for our Weinheim and Kaiserslautern facilities in Germany. This EU-wide certificate characterizes us as “Authorised Economic Operator (AEO-F)” and is an essential element of the EU’s security policy in international trade. AEO-certified companies are considered the most trustworthy and reliable and therefore enjoy simplified customs clearance within the European Union.

For ten years, the German installation artist Ulli Böhmelmann has been trans-forming nonwovens into art. “Nonwoven fabric offers a variety of processing options and is easy to handle. I am fas-cinated by the stability of the material, even in very thin formats, which per-fectly suits my topics of space, fragility and transparency”, the artist commented. In her current project, “FacettenAugen-Blick” at the Berlin art hotel “Luise”, Böhmelmann relies on a very special nonwoven fabric from the Viledon® range: novatexx 2472. Made from polyolefins, this membrane supporting nonwoven can easily be formed into narrow tubes without bending. The fabric also has the necessary stiffness to impart stability to the installation.
