Who Was Claude Monet?Claude Monet was one of
the greatest artists of all
time. His paintings have
changed the way people viewtheir surroundings, and hisstyle is famous around the
world. Today thousands ofitems such as cookie tins,
mouse pads, and tableclothsare printed with his distinct ive
images on them.
EARLY LIFE
Oscar-Claude was born in
Paris on November 14, 1840.He lived with his parents andolder brother Leon in a small
apartment near the River
Seine. His family called himOscar but he was to becomefamous as Claude Monet.
The family did not havemuch money. When Monetwas five, they moved to ahouse near Le Havre in
Normandy so Claude's fathercould work in his brother-in-law's grocery business. After
that, their financial situation
improved and Claude grew upin comfortable surroundings.

BY THE SEAMonet had a happy home life. There was a lot to see and doaround the bustling port. He loved the fresh air and the sea,and spent a lot of time on the beach and in the surroundingcountryside. At school, his art teacher encouraged him andhe filled sketchbooks with drawings of boats, landscapes,
and people. He also drew caricatures of his teachers, whichwere popular with his friends.
