Claude’s How to “BE” Rules continued: Why? Because they know what doesn’t work and they just keep learning and trying till they get it right. A loser tries once or twice and then resigns to whining, complaining, mediocrity, complacency and obscurity. Show me a winner and I will show you someone who understands that failure is just a stepping stone towards success.Be Smart: Oh Boy, is this a favorite of mine. All my life I’ve heard stuff like “nose to the grindstone”, “Work Hard”, “You’ve got to have a good work ethic” and so on. As I said in a previous issue “If working hard is the key to success then why isn’t my nice garbage man a millionaire”? There are too many of you going through all the motions of working hard and not getting to your BANK. It’s OK to have a good work ethic, but if it’s not getting you to your financial goals than you’re no better then a gerbil in one of those treadmill cages. Working hard is only half the solution. You must work smart enough to get to the place that allows you to achieve the greatness and financial freedom you deserve.Be Happy: (Sounds like a bad reggae tune.) Do something that’s fun for you everyday and work is never a four letter word. Sure the money is important, but how do you keep the fire within if you’re the world’s highest paid cesspool cleaner (advance apologies to all my cesspool cleaning readers). Unless you love standing in sh*t all day, it really won’t matter how much money you make. I remember how happy I was when I achieved my first business success in creative real estate. I got up every morning with a special energy knowing I was doing something that I was passionate about. Life is too short to be running the Slurpy™ machine or flipping burgers.Be Gutsy: A sign on my wall says that “The greatest risk in Life is not taking one”. It’s so easy to fall into a complacent lifestyle. Stop accepting mediocrity as a standard. Success takes Guts which I define as fortitude and a helluva lot of character. Take some reasonable risks and stop worrying about crossing all the t’s and dotting the i’s. There are no guarantees to success so stop waiting. It’s better to have tried and lost than never to have tried at all. Don’t go through life with too many regrets. Claude says, walk on the wild side a little in life. Be Gutsy. Be Hungry: You have got to want it badly; so badly that success is what you think about all the time. Remember the first time you fell in love? You couldn’t think of anything else except being with that special person (like Lovely CJ & I ). Being Hungry is a focus, a desire, a passion. Learn to use this emotional power of Hunger.Be Teachable: Be willing to learn all the time. I know I have said it many a time, but “school is never over and learning never stops”. It has been said that knowledge is power. The quickest way to success is to know more than your competition and be willing to implement that knowledge.Be Decisive: Make a decision and stick with it. I can’t tell you how many well educated folks I have met with all kinds of degrees who lack the courage to implement all that expensive knowledge. If you have followed the (Be Teachable) above then make a decision to do something with that pricey knowledge. Be Decisive.Be Original: We need more original ideas and thinkers out there. How many times have you had a good idea until someone ridiculed it and then you dropped it entirely. It’s tough to be an original and if you don’t believe me start researching all the greats in exploration, science, entertainment, the arts, you name it. I remember when I was planning my first success novel The Mentor, A Story of Success©. I can’t tell you how many so called experts told me that I had a snowball’s chance in Maui to sell it. I am happy to report that the book is selling well and was picked up by Amazon.com and soon Barnes and Noble. In fact, we just received the first of hopefully many royalty checks. Years ago I had the idea to write a motivational story of a young man’s journey from despair to financial success with the aid of a mysterious Mentor. The book would be in a quality binder which would also contain an audio version narrated by yours truly onto studio edited and music enhanced cassette tapes as a convenience for those who would like to listen while driving or for those who are sight impaired. I would express my thoughts, be who I truly wanted to be and to hell with the embarrassment, consequences or judgment of others. Shakespeare said “to thine own self be true”. You are as good as (if not better) than anyone you have ever envied or admired. Popeye said it best “I y’am what I y’am and that’s all that I y’am”. (You gotta love a guy who quotes legendary cartoon characters :-)! I finally got to a point in my life where I discovered that I am happy with the person I am. We live in a crazy celebrity, hero worshipping society when we should just be content with ourselves. Be Yourself and be content for the rest of your days. “Be” all you can “Be”!

The Mentor Teaches Me The GUTS ™ Selling System

Sales is Now Fun, Profitable and within your Control On the following page is an excerpt from my forthcoming new novel.

“When I was a kid I remember that people would tell me to SHUT UP! Now they pay me 7 figures because I do talk! Go figure?” Claude INTRODUCTION

Sleazy, Liar, Big mouth, Annoying, Nuisance, Loud, Obnoxious, Exaggerator (sounds like the beginning of the story of Snow White and the decrepit Dwarfs! Some other descriptive favorites are Manipulative, Cheap Polyester Suits and the Infamous Willie Loman from Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. These are all terms that are conjured up when we mention the words sales/salesman. Think about it, what proud father or mother in their right mind would have exclaimed on the birth of their new offspring “ Here is my Son/Daughter, The Future Salesperson”!

Yep, you’re right. It just ain’t going to happen. Having said all this I had many sales jobs, from running the blue light special at K-Mart™ to selling hot-dogs in the South Bronx (da Bronx) for Swift Premium™. The training in sales ranged from nil to sophisticated and included expensive seminars. I was good, but I was not making the money I envisioned and grew to dislike the way many prospects were treating me. They would keep me waiting in their offices while I was reading their old boring trade magazines even though I had an appointment. Eventually they would grant me an audience. (Heck the Pope would be easier to see with posturing). Sometimes I would get an order, sometimes a BS session, other times disrespect, after all I was only a salesman. I eventually would find myself finding excuses not to go out and make presentations, I started becoming a slacker because I just wasn’t feeling fulfilled. I mean how the heck do you motivate yourself everyday when you get up in the morning? Oh boy, today I get to go out and have some prospective buyer crap all over me again, what fun!

In light of the above, I always seemed to meet salespeople who loved what they were doing, had their own business and best of all they were making unbelievable money while having control and FUN with their lives. I was always envious and I wanted what they had; security, self esteem and big bucks.

Note: For those of you who disdain making money and just want to make the world better for Tofu then read no further.

I had taken all the modern sales seminars, read all the classic books and recent best sellers and for the most part these guys were all saying the same thing, but in different ways about presentations, closing and the usual dog and pony shows blended with tons of hype and motivation. This stuff was older than Methuselah (old dude in the Bible). I wanted to learn, but this stuff just didn’t seem to work for me on a long term basis. I thought that I needed a Sales Mentor/Coach if I was ever going to get out of my sales rut, someone who had achieved the success that I wanted, had the right to teach me because he was doing it right, all the way to the bank.

I went out to find the best salesman in the world who would teach me his system of success. One day my search was over and I found the person who gave me the sales tools to make as much money as I wanted. I called this system “The Guts” because it made me confident, it allowed me to work smart and go to the bank.

This novel is based on that Mentoring relationship, the lessons learned and how my life was never the same again. PrologueIt’s Monday morning and Leo is sitting in the last row of the sales meeting room trying to stay awake for anotherboring meeting held by the company's sales manager. Leo feels that he is the world’s worst salesman and with goodreason. He is constantly rejected by his prospects, he gets the run around all the time. He is treated with disrespectby his customers and his peers and frankly he is living from paycheck to paycheck earning very few commissions. His credit cards are always maxed out and he is always behind in his bills. He is unmotivated and lacks any selfesteem. He hates getting up for work because he knows that each day gets worse. Leo knows that there are a few fellow workers who love their jobs and are always on the top of their sales, who make great money, drive nice cars and win all the awards at the company annual conventions. Then one day something wonderful happened and his lifemade a dramatic change for the better.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter One-The Monday Morning Sales Meeting

Oh Gawd, Leo exclaimed, how the hell am I going to stay awake for another one of these boring things? Hedecided that rather than fight the feeling of sleepiness, he would place his head on his arms and try to catch a few winks; after all, he was in the back of the meeting room and who would notice? It’s 9:00 AM on Monday and as is the company's custom, the usual sales meeting is called to order by Vincent Demitre the National Sales Manager forExcelsior, Ltd. He is also known unofficially as the tormentor. Leo Silver, the northeast territory salesman has been attending the same useless rah rah sessions for 3 years and the meetings are always the same. Treat the top sellers like they were royalty and then crap all over the rest of the sales staff.

Demitre marched into the room shaking hands like the President entering Congress to give the State of the Union Address. He was dressed in his expensive custom made Italian silk suit, Gucci shoes and Cartier watch. He began the sales meeting with the usual perfunctory comments about changes in pricing and shipping schedules. Then hebegan his same boring sales spiel. He always picked a new subject to brief the “troops” as he liked to call them.

Well, we have had some great individual record sales thanks to Nolan Smith, but we missed the mark on ourquota because a few people around here aren’t taking their sales very seriously. He gave the room of salespeoplehis typical sinister scan and then spotted a very tired Leo in the last row with his head cradled in his arms.

Well I see Mr. Silver is not finding our little meeting very interesting today. Demitre walked within a foot of Leoand in his most sarcastic voice asked, Mr. Silver do you need some No-Doz™ tablets in order to join the rest of us in the land of the living?

Leo reacted in a way that even surprised him. He looked at the tormentor and exclaimed, Hey Vincent, if you have some I sure could use ‘em, but I would rather have a double expresso instead of this crappy cheap coffee you guys serve. Leo relished the opportunity to reverse the tables, but he knew that playing games with Demitre was basic hari kari as the Japanese would say. One did not reply in jest to Mr. Vincent Demitre.

Demitre’s face turned cherry red as the entire room burst into uproarious laughter at Leo’s remark. He neverexhibited a sense of humor unless he was the one telling the joke, usually at someone’s expense. He felt humiliatedby Leo’s lack of respect to him, a management superior. Well Vincent thought, I will show him. It’s time to kick some butt, Leo Silver butt. Mr. Silver let’s have a look at your sales over the last quarter.

Oh Oh Leo thought to himself. Well Mr. Silver, the last time I recall you had the lowest sales in the company except for Ms. Johnson who is out on maternity leave. Have you considered having a baby Mr. Silver, Vincent questionedsarcastically. Have you reached your quota for the last quarter? No sir, Leo replied quickly in a quiet voice.

Well then sir, what gives you the right to take a nocturnal sojourn during a sales meeting where you might learn something? Why can’t you be more like Nolan Smith? Now he is a salesman Mr. Silver, unlike yourself. Vincentthen walked to the front of the room and resumed the meeting. Leo was fuming, but there was nothing he could do. A small part of him even agreed with Demitre; why couldn’t he be more like Nolan Smith? Continued>>>>>>

7Leo decided that he had to do something before it was too late; before he lost all self respect. He had experienced the last humiliation he would ever tolerate from the likes of Mr. Demitre. He had to find a way out of this quagmire of failure, but how? Money was tight, he was in an endless spiral of sales failure, he needed a way out. He needed help, but where from? At that moment, Nolan Smith, the star salesman of Excelsior, Inc. tapped him on the shoulder and awoke him from his deep thoughts. Hi there Leo, I was wondering if I might speak with you for a moment? Leo nodded a surprised acknowledgment; Nolan had never spoken to him before. I just wanted to let you know that I thought Demitre's behavior was way out of line. He is a dinosaur and I have told him as much. He thinks that he can increase sales in the company by intimidation, long senseless sales meetings, wasteful paperwork, berating and humiliating the sales staff like he did to you today. It’s no big deal Nolan, Leo replied. I have heard it all before, besides I brought on myself; Demitre was in no mood for my humor today. If I was a go getter salesperson like you, management types like Demitre would treat me a heck of a lot better. That's just my point Leo, Nolan replied. You want to succeed, but no one has ever given you the proper tools. It’s like giving a commercial jet mechanic a kitchen spatula and telling him to tune up the jet engines. Leo, you remind me of me when I first started in sales. What do you mean Nolan? I am the the worst salesman in the company and you are the best. Leo, let’s get out of here, have some lunch and I will explain. Leo was wondering how he would pay for lunch, as he only had $5.00 in his wallet. Nolan, possibly sensing Leo’s anxiety said, and lunch is on me Protege.

Why did you just call me Protégé, Nolan? Be patient Leo, all your questions will be answered in due time, but first let’s eat I’m starving. They went outside and made their way to Nolan's car, a new loaded Lexis. Leo sat down in the rich soft leather seats. All Leo could think about was the old 1989 clunker he was using to get around in. You like the car Leo? You bet Nolan, I always wanted to drive a show wagon like this. Leo, what would you think if I told you that in 30 days you will be driving any car your heart desires if you are hungry, teachable, decisive and can show a little guts? Frankly Nolan, my response would be that I would find that very hard to believe. Nolan took his eyes off the road for a second and gave Leo an intense look, just you wait and see Protege. He smiled coyly and pulled up in front of DZ Atkins, Nolan's favorite San Diego Deli. They proceeded inside and were immediately escorted to a quiet corner booth. Leo noticed pictures on the wall of all sorts of VIPs; politicians, famous actors and news anchors. On the table were giant tubs of pickles and green tomatoes which Nolan proceed to dive into. Try these Leo, they’re great and they make them right on the premises. The waiter gave them the largest laminated and most complex menu Leo had ever seen and then poured 2 large glasses of freshly made ice tea. When the waiter returned for the order, Leo didn’t have a clue what to get. Leo if it’s all right, as you are my guest, let me order for you. Nolan looked up at the waiter and requested ‘the usual please’.

Nolan then began. Leo as you know, I am the top salesman in the entire company for Excelsior and that includes our international and national sales division. What you may not know is that less than 3 years ago, I was the worst salesman in the world; I couldn’t even give away twenty dollar bills on the street corner. Leo interrupted, I find that hard to believe Nolan. Well, it’s true my friend, Nolan countered. I learned from my Mentor that Sales is NOT about giving dog and pony show presentations, memorizing sales scripts and charts. Sales is about WORKING SMART, HAVING FUN, achieving FINANCIAL FREEDOM and it can all be done with a sales system. Leo, I used to hate sales because I had no control over sales process and a low self image because of that lack of control and abuse that was heaped upon me daily. The worst thing of all was that I wasn’t making MONEY. The waiter interrupted their conversation by bringing two enormous plates with the largest sandwiches Leo ever saw. I hope you like my favorite sandwich Leo, it’s a corned beef, pastrami, tongue and chopped chicken liver on fresh rye bread. Looks good Nolan, Leo then picked up half the sandwich and realized how hungry he was. It was delicious, but most of the meat fell out onto the plate. Nolan laughed out loud. The same thing happened to me when my Mentor brought me here. Eatting it takes a little practice, but it’s well worth it. After devouring half the sandwich, Leo asked Nolan about the system and his Mentor.

Great questions Leo and as a matter of fact, asking questions are part of the system rather than giving free consultations all day like most salesmen. When we finish our lunch I want to take you to meet a good friend of mine. Life is strange, but fun Department! Recently I received one of the few surprises in my life, an autographed picture by none other than Arnold Palmer. Yes, the inventor of the half iced tea and half lemonade drink.

CJ kicked my butt on a golf date and it took years before I could go ba to the links. Believe it or not, the story somehow got to a remarkable web page called

www.Badgolfmonthly.com. It then made it to the attention of an acquaintance of the Palmer Organization who got it into the hands of the Great One. In the mail one day arrives a yellow manila bubble envelope with an 8 X 11 autographed picture (featured to the left) which read “To Claude, Best Wishes Arnold Palmer”. Is it any reason to wonder why I love this business, the many wonderful roads it has taken me on and the people I have had the pleasure to meet?
