EXAMPLE 1 Writing and Solving Proportions

Renting MoviesOn Tuesday, you paid $7.47 to rent movies. On Friday, you rent 5 movies for a total of $12.45. Each movie costs the same amount to rent. How many movies did you rent on Tuesday?

1st Try Writing and Solving Proportions

Rhinoceros Beetles

An adult rhinoceros beetle weighs only 0.525 ounce but can carry about 446.25 ounces on its back. If a person were proportionately as strong as a rhinoceros beetle, how much weight could a 100 pound person carry?

446.25

0.525 = x100 Write a proportion

ouncesounces = pounds

pounds.

446.250.525 100 =

x100

100 Multiply each side by 100.

Simplify.85,000 x=

If human strength were proportional to that of a rhinoceros beetle, a 100 pound person could carry 85,000 pounds.
