Unfortunately, during summer thunder-storms, people may suffer storm-related damage to their homes and cars. The Wyoming Depart-ment of Insurance (DOI) offers these tips to help people with their insurance claims.
• • • • • • • •Dealing with storm damage and insurance: • Start the claim process - Contact your insur-ance company or agent and begin the claim process. Contact the DOI if you need contact information. • Document / mitigate the damage - If the damage to your home is extensive, take photos and document what was lost. If the damage is repairable, mitigate further damage by placing tarps on roofs or boarding up windows. • Ask questions - Work with your insurance com-pany on how the claim process will work. In these times of social distancing, companies are not always sending adjusters, and instead are using technologies like video or drone to assess damage. Once that is done, an adjuster will provide documentation to your insurance company to determine your claims settle-ment. Be sure to ask for an itemized explanation of the claim settlement offer. If there is a disagreement,
question. If this disagreement results in a claim denial, make sure you obtain a written letter explaining the
under which the claim is being denied. • Estimates for repair costs can change - Re-
-portant to provide additional information about this damage to your insurer before repair work continues. Improvements or repair work for damage that was not part of the storm will not be covered. • Contact the DOIwith the insurance companies, the DOI can assist con-sumers with questions about insurance and the claims process. Call the DOI at 307-777-7401 or at 1-800-438-5768 or complete a contact form at: http://doi.wyo.gov/contact-us
Be prepared for severe summer weather: • Review your Homeowners and Auto Insurance
Policies - Know what is in your policies. Ask questions if there is anything you do not understand. Storm or
have comprehensive coverage on the vehicle. An-nually review your policies and coverage limits to make sure they keep pace with your needs, construc-tion costs in your area, and the age and use of your vehicle. • Consider Buying Flood Insurance - Flood in-surance requires a 30-day waiting period before it be-comes effective. Flood insurance must be purchased as a separate policy. The Federal Emergency Manage-
ment Agency (FEMA) administers the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a program available to any property owner whether or not the property is in a
insurance, contact the NFIP at 888-379-9531 or go to for more information or to get
an agent in this area. • Create a Home Inventory - Before any disaster strikes, create a home inventory. An inventory can be invaluable when deciding how much insurance cov-
adequately protected.
Do your homework: • Be Aware of Claim Filing Deadlines- Increas-
entire claim is denied. • Verify Adjusters - Adjusters may contact you if you have suffered damage to your home. All individ-uals acting as an insurance adjuster must be licensed with the DOI. An adjuster is an individual who for com-pensation as an independent contractor or a salaried employee of an insurer, investigates and negotiates settlement of claims arising under insurance contracts
are not licensed in Wyoming. Licensing information is public information and can be searched at: https://sites.google.com/a/wyo.gov/doi/database-search or by contacting the DOI. • – After
construction contractors start door-to-door sales or phone solicitations. While most contractors are hon-est and reputable, some make false promises. Some insist on full payment before the work is complete and may even create damage where none occurred. Find more information at the Better Business Bureau’s site You’ve Been Hit with Hail, What’s Next? • Hiring a Contractor - Be sure to read the con-tract carefully. Some contractors include an assign-
for any repairs that are not covered by the insurance company. Storm damage repair contractors should provide their business name and proof of their license and liability coverage. Storm damage contractors can-not claim to be adjusters.
