Invasive Lionfish may eat up Texascoastline, says Texas A&M expertAttention Texans: the
invasive lionfish is nearyour coastline, he’s hungry,he’s on the prowl and thereappears to be no stoppinghim. A Texas A&MUniversity at Galvestonresearcher says the best wayto control lionfish might beserving the pesky sea crea-tures as the blue plate spe-cial on restaurant menus.
Raven Walker, a doctoralstudent in marine biology atthe Galveston campus, hasstudied the lionfish foryears and knows just howwidespread a problem thepretty fish can be.It’s believed the lionfish
were brought into southernwaters in the 1980s throughaccidental or intentionalhuman release, but nowthey are a big problem in theCaribbean Atlantic Coastand along the Gulf Coast toTexas. Plenty of them havebeen spotted near theFlower Garden BanksNational Marine Sanctuarylocated about 100 milessouth of Galveston, andwhere they are seen, thereare bound to be more, shenotes.“The female is capable
of laying 2 million eggs peryear,” says Walker, “so thatgives you some idea of howbig a problem we are talkingabout. They multiply likecrazy. The thing about aninvasive species like thelionfish is that once it hasestablished itself in an area,it’s almost impossible tocontrol it.”The fish are beautiful in
their shape, with 18 ven-omous spines that can beseven or eight inches longprotruding from their body. They have a gluttonousappetite – especially forother fish – eating anythingthat can fit into their mouth. It’s believed lionfish goafter at least 70 differentspecies of fish, includinggroupers, snapper, crabs andshrimp and others.Lionfish have now been
found as far north as RhodeIsland and the Carolinas, but prefer warmer waterswhich is why the Gulf Coast
and now even SouthAmerican countries aretheir primary breedinggrounds. They have beenfound at depths as far as3,000 feet. There is no limit on how
many lionfish divers or fish-ermen can catch, but evenunlimited access to themhas not stopped their num-bers from rising dramatical-ly every year, Walker says. One possible solution:
Make them more availableto seafood restaurants.“If we can create con-
sumer demand for them, itmight be a way to controltheir numbers,” explainsWalker, who is currentlyworking on an academic
paper about controllinglionfish.
“They are already a pop-ular dish in the Caribbean. It’s a simple idea – the morepeople eat them, the betterour chances are of control-ling them.”
Walker says it’s just amatter of time before theinvasive lionfish becomes abig headache for Texas.“They tend to follow cur-
rents, and the Gulf currentstypically bring them ourway, and more of themevery year,” she notes.“In the next few years,
lionfish could be a really bigproblem for Texas.”

Texas A&M researchers solvemystery of historic 1952 London fogFew Americans may be
aware of it, but in 1952 akiller fog that containedpollutants covered Londonfor five days, causingbreathing problems andkilling thousands of resi-dents. The exact cause andnature of the fog hasremained mostly unknownfor decades, but an interna-tional team of scientists thatincludes several TexasA&M University-affiliatedresearchers believes that themystery has been solvedand that the same air chem-istry also happens in Chinaand other locales.Texas A&M researcher
Renyi Zhang, UniversityDistinguished Professor andthe Harold J. Haynes Chairof Atmospheric Sciencesand Professor of Chemistry, along with graduate stu-dents Yun Lin, WilmarieMarrero-Ortiz, JeremiahSecrest, Yixin Li, Jiaxi Huand Bowen Pan andresearchers from China,Florida, California Israeland the UK have had theirwork published in the cur-rent issue of Proceedings ofthe National Academy ofSciences (PNAS).In December of 1952,
the fog enveloped all ofLondon and residents atfirst gave it little noticebecause it appeared to be nodifferent from the familiarnatural fogs that have sweptover Great Britain for thou-sands of years. But over the next few
days, conditions deteriorat-ed, and the sky literallybecame dark. Visibility wasreduced to only three feet inmany parts of the city, alltransportation was shutdown and tens of thousandsof people had troublebreathing. By the time thefog had lifted on Dec. 9, atleast 4,000 people had diedand more than 150,000 hadbeen hospitalized.Thousands of animals in thearea were also killed.Recent British studies
now say that the death countwas likely far higher – morethan 12,000 people of all
ages died from the killerfog. It has long been knownthat many of those deathswere likely caused by emis-sions from coal burning, butthe exact chemical process-es that led to the deadly mixof fog and pollution havenot been fully understoodover the past 60 years. The 1952 killer fog led to
the passage of the Clean AirAct in 1956 by the BritishParliament and is still con-sidered the worst air pollu-tion event in the Europeanhistory.Through laboratory
experiments and atmospher-ic measurements in China, the team has come up withthe answers.“People have known that
sulfate was a big contributorto the fog, and sulfuric acidparticles were formed fromsulfur dioxide released bycoal burning for residentialuse and power plants, andother means,” Zhang says.“But how sulfur dioxide
was turned into sulfuric acidwas unclear. Our resultsshowed that this processwas facilitated by nitrogendioxide, another co-productof coal burning, andoccurred initially on naturalfog. Another key aspect inthe conversion of sulfurdioxide to sulfate is that itproduces acidic particles, which subsequently inhibitsthis process. Natural fogcontained larger particles ofseveral tens of micrometersin size, and the acid formedwas sufficiently diluted.Evaporation of those fogparticles then left smalleracidic haze particles thatcovered the city.”The study shows that
similar chemistry occursfrequently in China, whichhas battled air pollution fordecades. Of the 20 mostpolluted cities in the world,China is home to 16 ofthem, and Beijing oftenexceeds by many times theacceptable air standards setby the U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency.“The difference in China
is that the haze starts from
much smaller nanoparticles, and the sulfate formationprocess is only possiblewith ammonia to neutralizethe particles,” Zhang adds.“In China, sulfur dioxide
is mainly emitted by powerplants, nitrogen dioxide isfrom power plants and auto-mobiles, and ammoniacomes from fertilizer useand automobiles. Again, theright chemical processeshave to interplay for thedeadly haze to occur inChina. Interestingly, whilethe London fog was highlyacidic, contemporaryChinese haze is basicallyneutral.”Zhang says China has
been working diligentlyover the past decade tolessen its air pollution prob-lems, but persistent poor airquality often requires peo-ple to wear breathing masksduring much of the day.China’s explosive industrialand manufacturing growthand urbanization over thepast 25 years have con-tributed to the problem.“A better understanding
of the air chemistry holdsthe key for development ofeffective regulatory actionsin China,” he adds.“The government has
pledged to do all it can toreduce emissions going for-ward, but it will take time,”he notes. “We think wehave helped solve the 1952London fog mystery andalso have given China someideas of how to improve itsair quality. Reduction inemissions for nitrogenoxides and ammonia is like-ly effective in disruptingthis sulfate formationprocess.”The study was funded by
the National NaturalScience Foundation ofChina, the Robert A. WelchFoundation, the Ministry ofScience and Technology ofChina, a US NationalScience FoundationFellowship, a NASA Earthand Space ScienceFellowship, and a collabora-tive research grant betweenTexas A&M and China.
