OCTOBER 2014 Proving Size Doesn’t Matter Since 1986 Vol. 28 No. 10
The Newsletter of the Central Pennsylvania Model Car Club
The Super September Showdown drew a boatload of great entries, but perhaps the most insane was
entered by our own Steve Eberly, who rolled out of Gilbertsville with the Best of Show honors for his
incredible Camaro! (Oh yea…he also scored first place in the Road & Track class with this beauty, and
claimed the Street Rod trophy with his ‘37 Ford pick-up)

Craig’s List… Well...another Labor Day has come and gone...and another Super September Showdown that I couldn't
attend again. I miss that show a lot!
I want to take a minute to let you know that I will not be seeking re-election for next year as president. I
didn't do a very thorough job this year and from the looks of it, I will be out on the softball diamond
more next year than I was this year. I have been honored to have been selected to several higher level
softball tournaments next year and they happen to fall on the first Saturday of the months.
Having said that...I have also been honored to have been your prez for this past year. THANK YOU to all
that helped out and filled in at various shows and events when asked. Thanks as well to all that serve in
various capacities to make this club what it is! I am proud to be a member of an organization that has
the reputation that we have.
It is not too early to start thinking of who will lead next year. I hope that more people will step up and
help out. There is a select few that seems to always be the ones that do most of the work. We NEED
more people to join those few!
Thanks to Rick for taking the reins in September!
DECEMBER:
THE Restoration challenge
Rules – bring an old build back
from the dead; call it a rescue or a
restoration, but a photo of the
model in the horrid condition it
was in when you started must
accompany the entry for
comparison!
2014 Special Theme REMINDER
WANTED By Craig: 1) Front engine cover from
the Ford motor in the Revell ‘32 Ford kits. 2)

SARGE’S
CORNER
WOW !!!!!! What a GREAT CPMCC WEEKEND !!!!!! The meeting got off to a rough start because of a 5K
race and a want-to-be-in-charge firefighter, telling us we couldn't be there. After that was sorted out, it
was business as usual. I noticed a sign on the refrigerators stating, for firefighters only, meaning no
more sodas for us. So I inquired about it and found, it doesn't pertain to us.
Business part of meeting went fast, because I usually don't have much to say. However, I did bring up
that our President is stepping down after this year and we are going to need some fresh names on the
ballot. I did forget to mention a couple things on Saturday, like we have our auction coming up, so start
looking through your basements, garages and closets etc. Also, we have our pizza party in December
along with our Toys For Tots drive. Lets fill up Terry’s car again !!!!!!!!.
I'm sure I'm still forgetting something. Oh yeah I forgot, we had 3 new members join and a fourth one
joining in Oct. I don't have the applications in front of me, but welcome to the club, glad to have you
onboard !!!!!!
Day 2 of this Great CPMCC Weekend kicked off at 0700 for the SUPER SEPTEMBER SHOWDOWN XV at
Gilbertsville fire hall, and man, was it ever SUPER! We had approximately 200 attendees, nearly 100
participants, a dozen or so venders and a new record of models on the table at 596. I want to
personally thank everyone that helped make this show a huge success. I also want to thank Tom
Gunshannon for being a Great MC. Okay, actually thank him for not making me go up there. Next year’s
show is already booked for 13 Sept 2015, Thank You Len Feinberg for your support of our club. Next
year’s theme will be European invasion. I would also like to thank all the club members that are
stepping up and helping out at all our functions, not just the Showdown. Keep up the Great work !!!!!!!
See yaw in Oct, DISMISSED !!!!!!!!!!
Classic Plastic Vol. 28 No.10 5
Well, waddayaknow? We crushed it at the Showdown! Like Rick mentioned, we destroyed pretty much
every record set at the 14 previous Super September Showdowns! There were more people, more
models and more fun than ever! To top it all off, the trophies Jim Weir (thanks again, Jim!) hooked us up
with were amazing! As the story goes, there was a mix-up at the trophy shop with the material for our
trophies accidentally getting used for another customer. But, Lamb Awards & Engraving being the class
act they are, made ours with an even better grade acrylic and honored the original price, and they
turned out great. Nearly everyone who saw them commented on how cool they were! Now we have a
challenge…try to get the same or better for next year. It may boost the price we have to charge for a
trophy pack, but we’ll look into that before making that kind of commitment. We want to keep them
reasonable for the sponsors. But damn…they were HOT! It’s hard to impress people who are used to
winning trophies, but we did!
It was great to see how well things went, and especially nice to see Len smile so much all day long.
Before I had my first cup of fire hall coffee, he handed me a flyer announcing the date for next year’s
September Showdown! Thank you Len! And like Rick, I also need to “shout out” to all the members who
helped setting up and keeping things running smoothly. Even Mr. “Uncle Bobby” Doebley worked his
fanny off helping at the registration table. (I had no idea he had that much energy!) I would like to
extend a special thanks Tom Gunshannon for doing another great job making announcements, but this
time, stepping up in spite of feeling wayyyy under the weather. Well done, Tom! Respect!
Looking ahead to the next couple months, we have some major stuff happening that you ought to mark
on your calendar. The October meeting is on the 4th, and following that we have our annual auction and
officer elections in November. December is when we have our annual Toys-For-Tots drive and Christmas
party featuring pizza provided by the club. Remember the rule: You must bring a new, unwrapped toy if
you want to eat pizza. In other words, “Donate or Don’t Eat!”. Additionally, the second special theme of
the year is held in December, where we showcase resurrected glue bombs! If you built or bought
something that deserved a little better effort, bring it back to life and have it at the meeting. You do
need a photo of the thing before you started so we can see how much you improved it!
Then, before you know it, we’ll be ringing in the New Year, and looking forward to 2015. One of the
highlights will be the return of Muscle Car Madness for the 14th installment. They’ll be celebrating the
50th Anniversary of the 1965 Super Stock Nationals, so you may have a pretty good idea what style of
build we’ll be looking to display on our table! Speaking of that, we really need to man up and make a
statement this time out. The last couple years have been lame in comparison, and we need to show the
event the respect it deserves. I have some ideas, as do others, on how to improve the quality of the
display itself, but you folks need to invest yourselves, too. Muscle cars, altereds, rails, and especially
Super Stock builds are right in our wheelhouse and we must fill the table with quantity as well as
quality. Let’s do right by Darwin and get it done!

News Desk Muscle Car Madness To Return
The date for the 2015 Muscle Car Madness at the
York Reunion event has been announced, and is
scheduled for July 10th and 11th at the York Expo
Center.
In 2015, they’ll be celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the 1965 Super Stock Nationals.
As in previous years, the club is expected to
exhibit and as the date approaches we’ll discuss
additional details.
Happy Birthday, MAMA!
At their September 2014 meeting, those MAMA’s
Boys celebrated their 26th birthday! Started in
1988 by Norm Veber, they now boast over 200
members and global notoriety. This makes them
possibly the largest model car club in the US!
The CPMCC would like to wish the MAMA club a
wonderful and happy birthday, and many, many
more!
Revell Offers Up The Challenger SRT8
Product ID: 85-4308
Overview
Skill level: 3
Scale: 1/25
Length: 7-7/8"
Width: 3-1/4"
Height: 2-5/16"
Parts: 44
Description
1970, meet 2014.
Put a 1970 Challenger next to a 2013 Challenger
and you can see a familial resemblance. Even
though the new Challenger borrows much of its
style from the seventies model, the two are
nowhere near in the same class. With a zero to
sixty of just four seconds, the 2013 SRT8 is one of
the fastest production pony cars ever. Plus, with
the 2013 topping out at 180, there's nothing left
for the old model to do but eat dust. Kit features
fully-detailed V-8 engine, decorated body and
metal axles.
Super September Showdown 2015!
We’re already booked for 9/13/15 in Gilbertsville!
The theme for the 16th edition of the Showdown
will be the “European Invasion”.
“European Invasion”? Yes, any car, bike or truck
born in Europe fits the class. There’s also no
restriction on how you build it; race, street,
custom, or maybe something we simply haven’t
seen before. Maybe a Trabant canyon carver. Rolls
Royce drift car? How about a Murcielago gasser?
Or, just bone stock. The only rules are no US or
Asian marques are allowed. It should be cool to
see what rolls off people’s benches given that
kind of freedom.

News Desk 2015 Club Themes Proposed
Suggestions were made in a contest committee
discussion at the September meeting for the two
2015 Special Themes, and tentatively accepted.
While there will be further discussion, and we’ll
accept alternate suggestions for consideration,
the two themes are “Nitro Fuel”, which would
include any vehicle (not just rails and funny cars)
that run the hot stuff. The other would be SBC
Power, celebrating the 50th year of the modern
Chevrolet small block V8.
In order to keep things manageable, we restrict
the special theme contests to two per year.
In the mean time, keep working on your
Resurrection Challenge for the December
meeting. We can’t wait to see what you were able
to save from the glue bomb graveyard!
Auction Action
November is auction month for the CPMCC. The
proceeds are applied to our general operating
expenses, some of which are pretty hefty and
definitely not covered by the annual membership
dues. Between the Christmas party, Showdown
trophies, room rent, club picnic, and annual
banquet, the expenses add up wicked quick, so
the boost from the auction is a big help.
Members bring in stuff they don’t need any longer
and donate them to be auctioned off. Members
and guests bid on whatever they are interested in
and the winning bidder gets the goods.
While hobby-related items like kits (complete,
please), tools and accessories are the bulk of
what we see, there’s plenty of room for household
and workshop goods, and occasionally, gently
used clothes. Just don’t bring anything that
belongs on the curb. (Yes, it has happened – Ed.) Officer Elections In November
November is election month for the CPMCC.
Officers serve one-year terms, and in some cases,
many of them in succession, but we afford the
membership the chance to affect change in
leadership when the spirit moves them to do so.
As mentioned elsewhere in this issue, Craig Turner
is stepping down as club president at the end of
his current term, so there’s definitely a slot to be
filled for 2015. The role of president shouldn’t be
taken lightly, and you sure do it for the money, so
if you nominate someone (or yourself) do so
understanding it’s an opportunity to help grow the
club, maintain its positive reputation in the hobby
and the community, and (this may be the toughest
part) provide a monthly column for the newsletter.
We will also elect or re-elect the VP and treasurer
for 2015.
Big Wheels
With summer activities slowing down and Fall
upon us, maybe you can benefit from a visit to one
of the region’s automotive museums for
inspiration, or just a nice break to your routine.
The AACA in Hershey (acamuseum.org) is currently
featuring Dodges through 10/12, and then they
debut their Tucker exhibit. America on Wheels
(americaonwheels.org) is showcasing Orphaned
Cars currently, and the Simeone Museum near
Philly (simeonemuseum.org) highlights what those
who have visited consider to be among the most
amazing collections of “drivers” from all over the
world. If you’re a big fan of Pennsylvania’s
transportation heritage, the Boyertown Museum
of Historic Vehicles (boyertownmuseum.org) is an
interesting place, with the locally famous Fegely’s
Diner, restored and preserved indoors.

Got her done last night and polished out tonight…impressions of the kit: It is fun to build until you get to
fitting all the body parts together, even with hours of mockup on this the hood still does not fit perfectly.
The taillight section is a joke to get glued on without getting any bubbles under the smoked clear parts
(which is why I painted mine black...I just could not take it anymore!!!) All in all though, it came together
into something I don’t mind displaying. The paint/clear is 8 coats thick: of HOK Kandys and Pearls (gold
and blue) and of course clearcoat.....then wet-sanded with 3000 to 13000 grit and polished with Plast-x
and Meguiar's Mirror Glaze High tech Yellow wax.
(Really nice to see such an uncommon kit built so well! – Ed.)

It was an AMT kit (1/25th scale) and I attempted to scratchbuild as much as possible on the car. My
goal was to do a modern interpretation of a hot rod I'd like to own. (The pictures on MCM’s forum were
amazing! It would have taken many pages here to try to capture the depth of this fellow’s talent! – Ed)

Morgantown Toy Car Show Extravaganza (Submitted via email by “Rick”, who apparently doesn’t use a last name, or assumes everyone

memorabilia. You can view the creations in the model car contest (classes: street, open wheel race
car, and " anything goes") Trophies in all classes. And watch some top notch slot car racing by

If you only do one show a year, this it the “event” you don’t want to miss. From the hobbyist to the
serious collector, you will find what you are looking for. There is even a special surprise for the kids.
