    Garden Walks Join Olbrich staff for informative and fun outdoor gardens and conservatory walks. Walks occur snow, rain, or shine; cancellations only in the event of dangerous lightning or snow storm. Dress appropriately for the weather. All walks begin in the Visitor Center Lobby. Advance registration required.

    Rose Garden - Gardens for Every Season Tuesday, June 2, 6:30-8 pm Join Olbrich Horticulturist Tony Gomez for an in-depth look at how Olbrich has created and maintains the beautiful Rose Garden. This garden showcases hardy, disease-resistant shrub and climbing rose varieties that need much less care than the majority of roses on the market today. Unlike traditional rose gardens, Olbrich’s Rose Garden has been designed for displays in every season. Come see how you, too, can combine bulbs, annuals, perennials, vines, shrubs, and small-scale trees with a variety of roses to create a stunning Midwestern rose garden. Limited space; register early.

    Atwood Neighborhood Tree Walk Monday, June 15, 6-8 pm Join Arborist Sean Gere, owner of Gere Tree Care, Inc., for a tree walk in the Atwood Neighborhood. This neighborhood has an amazing diversity of trees that generally go unnoticed. He will share information and tips on tree identification, along with information that will expand your appreciation for trees. Bring a notebook. Adults and youth (ages 13 and up w/ an adult); each participant pays the registration fee. Limited space; register early.

    Garden Design Walk Monday, June 22, 5-6:30 pm Have you ever wondered how you can incorporate ideas from other garden spaces into your home garden? Join Olbrich Horticulturist Samantha Peckham on a walk through the outdoor gardens and learn how you can borrow design ideas from any garden space. She will discuss specific tips and techniques so you can recreate the design concepts and feel of other gardens in your own spaces. Limited space; register early.

    Stunning and Sustainable Gardens Walk Monday, July 13, 6:30-8 pm Join Olbrich’s Director of Horticulture Jeff Epping for a walk through the outdoor gardens to learn about lower- maintenance garden alternatives for both sun and shade. He will highlight successful plantings that you can incorporate into your home garden -- from small- and large-scale meadows to serene groundcover plantings to brilliantly colored, drought-tolerant perennial combinations in borders, rain gardens, and gravel gardens. With high energy costs and reduced leisure time, sustainable gardening allows you to work in the garden less and enjoy it more! Limited space; register early.

    A Garden Stroll with Dr. Death Wednesday, July 15, 6:30-8 pm Learn about the exciting world of common plant diseases and management. UW-Madison Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic Director Brian Hudelson (aka Dr. Death) will discuss common plant diseases and show you examples during this leisurely stroll through Olbrich’s outdoor gardens. Limited space; register early.

    Gorgeous Gravel Gardens Walk Wednesday, July 29, 6:30-8 pm Green or sustainable gardens make sense for many reasons - they are good for the environment and for us. Many people want beautiful gardens, but don’t have the time, nor want to see precious resources like water and energy go into growing them. Join Olbrich’s Director of Horticulture Jeff Epping for a walk through the outdoor gardens to learn about gravel gardens and how they can easily be incorporated into home landscapes. He will show you how Olbrich has replaced lawns and traditional perennial beds with these sustainable gardens. Limited space; register early.

    Hydrangeas and Summer Flowering Shrubs Walk Thursday, July 30, 6:30-8 pm Hydrangeas, particularly the panicle types, are among the most showy and reliable flowering shrubs for northern climates and are a mainstay of the late summer garden. Join Olbrich Horticulturist Christian Harper on a lovely evening walk through Olbrich’s extensive collection of hydrangeas and other later- blooming shrubs, and learn how to utilize these beauties in your home landscape.     Garden Design for Plantaholics Walk Tuesday, August 25, 5-6:30 pm When you drive by a plant nursery do you find it impossible not to go inside? And then, do you find it utterly impossible not to buy a plant or two, or maybe even ten? Do you wonder how you are going to squeeze all your fabulous plants into the garden of your dreams? Join Olbrich Horticulturist Samantha Peckham for a walk through the outdoor gardens and discussion about how you can remodel your garden into a beautiful, functional space that will reflect your personality while showcasing ALL of your treasured plants.     Perennial Combinations for Sunny Places Walk Thursday, September 3, 6-7:30 pm Good plant combinations are the key to beautiful borders. Join Olbrich Horticulturist Phillip Stutz on a walk through the outdoor gardens where he will discuss and show you perennial plant combinations for sunny places. You will have an opportunity to observe how the mix of perennials with bulbs, trees, and shrubs helps fill out four season borders. Limited space; register early.

    Small Trees With Big Impact Walk Wednesday, September 9, 5:30-7 pm Small-scale trees are key players in any well-designed garden for their year-round beauty. The list of trees is large and horticulturists are creating and discovering new cultivars and species every year. Join Olbrich’s Director of Horticulture Jeff Epping for a walk through the outdoor gardens as he highlights the top-performing, small- scaled ornamental trees that you can grow in your landscape.     Italian Heirloom Vegetables Lecture and Walk Tuesday, September 15, 6:30-8:30 pm Heirloom vegetables can be tastier than modern commercial varieties and are often regionally adapted to suit particular soil and climate characteristics. Join Olbrich Horticulturist Erin Presley for a walk through the Herb Garden to see traditional Italian heirloom vegetables growing, and then continue the discussion with an indoor presentation to learn growing techniques, the history and stories of select varieties, and recipes for you to try at home.
