Course Objectives

REQUIRED MATERIALS Textbook with acceptable cover A sharpened pencil, pen, and

colored pencils Notebook for notes and

homework

(3-ring binder is recommended) A graphing calculator (TI-nspire or

TI-84+ recommended) 2 dry erase markers

This course provides the tools that you will need for college

mathematics courses, particularly Calculus. You will build on your

learning from Algebra II and Geometry to construct a deeper understanding of functions. As

you study Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry, you will be

investigating functions in new ways and working with more

abstract forms, including trigonometric functions. You will develop a deeper understanding

of the concepts of limits, area and slope that are essential in the

development of Calculus.

Class Goals

Expectations1. Be ready to learn when the bell rings. Class

is over when you are dismissed by the teacher.

2. Listen to and follow directions the first time.

3. RESPECT others at all times. Common courtesy is expected.

4. Participate in class discussions and group activities, complete all assignments on time and ask questions!

time you are having a problem pertaining to this class please see

me immediately so that we can remedy the problem as quickly as

possible. I am available most days both before and after school.

The Math Lab is also available during the school day.

The more prepared you are, the more confident you are, the more successful you will be. I hope to foster a confidence in you through positive attitude and reinforcement and create an educational environment where you can be your very best self.

• Be Part of a Team: It is a great feeling to be able to say “We did this!” when you collaboratively work toward a goal with your team. Teamwork fosters good communication skills and the ability to work well with others, an important trait that employers are always seeking in their candidates. Through the activities in this course you will learn to work effectively as a team member and function well as team leaders. I hope that you will feel important, accepted and part of something great.

Personal Reflection

• Personal Reflection: I hope that through my efforts to create a positive and welcoming classroom environment that you will reflect upon what is truly important in life and become positive role models through your daily actions and decisions. You are all within a year or two of graduating from high school and I hope that you will realize that you can make a difference in the world simply by always striving to be your very best self.

Love of Learning & Mathematics

• Love of Learning and Mathematics: I went into education because I have a love of learning and I believe that if one is always searching to learn new things and improve oneself then they will be positive contributors to society. I love mathematics because I enjoy the logical reasoning and puzzle solving that is important in mathematics and I hope to help foster this love in you as well. I hope that you will leave this class with a positive mind-set toward mathematics.

 

Compassion

• Compassion: Every day is a fresh start. I will be an advocate for you each and every day and do my best to greet each one of you with a smile on a daily basis. I realize that you will have good days and bad days and I also realize that there will be days when math is not the most important thing in your life at that moment. I will aim to be aware of your daily stresses and make an effort to alleviate some of it if possible. I hope that by modeling this compassion, you will also be kindhearted toward your classmates and develop a genuine concern for the welfare of others. I hope you will come to realize that your personal actions do matter.

If something is important enough to you, you will do anything for it.

As you move from high school to college, I hope you find the courage to reach beyond your limitations and to stand up for what you value and not be afraid to face new challenges and situations.
