3P is a lovely class of enthusiastic children. They have worked hard this semester and made many pleasing gains in their learning. The students are always willing to help others and strive to follow our core rules of Care, Co- operation and Courtesy. In Mathematics the class has studied various topics and the children enjoy participating in hands-on activities. The class particularly enjoyed using compasses, as a part of the topic of position, to locate North, East, South and West whilst walking around the school. They take great pleasure in playing mathematical games on the SMART Board. During Literacy sessions the class has been focusing on many aspects of writing including using punctuation correctly, using adjectives to enhance their work and writing and quality sentence structure to produce poetry, descriptions and information reports. The class is very focused during Guided Reading groups and takes great pride in their achievements. The children have enjoyed working on our Science unit about Space this term and are always keen to share their knowledge. Together we have found out many interesting facts. The children completed projects as a part of their homework and I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the work. The children should be proud of their efforts. I look forward to the remainder of the year with such a pleasant class to teach. These reports represent how your child has gone over the last two terms in all Key Learning Areas. It is not a half yearly report, but a report on progress made throughout semester one. Parents can expect from the semester one report clear and accurate advice about the performance of their child as well as giving information on what your child can do well and where they need to develop further. Please do not hesitate in contacting the class teacher if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s report. We are now taking names for our fantastic Kindy Start Program which is for children starting kindergarten at Toukley Public School in 2011. This program commences in Week 9 of next term. Kindy Start will run for 10 weeks on either a Tuesday or Thursday morning 9 am-12 noon. It is an extremely successful program which centres on preparing children for schooling at Toukley Public School. This program is run by a fully qualified teacher and focuses on school readiness, literacy, numeracy and language, fine and gross motor and self help skills. Your child will make new friends and become very confident within the school as they will visit a new class from kindergarten to year 6 each week. The starting date for Kindy Start is Tuesday 14th September or Thursday 16th September. There is no cost to attend this program and I would like to encourage families to enrol as places fill fast. We have had a number of complaints about our children’s behaviour on the buses before and after school. If students misbehave on buses there may be loss of subsidised school travel for up to two school weeks for the first offence and up to 10 weeks for the second offence. Ongoing misbehaviour may lead to permanent loss of subsidised school travel. If any adult has concerns about our students on the buses we ask that you contact us and Busways on 4392 6666. AUSTRALIAN WALKABOUT PARK EXCURSION On 16th June, Year One went on an excursion to the Australian Walkabout Park. Students were split into class groups and taken on a private tour through the National Park. The ranger showed students how to make Ochre and gave them the opportunity to throw a boomerang. Students then went to a reptile show, where they saw and touched a bearded dragon, blue tongue lizard, long necked turtle, diamond python and black-headed python. After lunch we were taken on a bushwalk through the park and saw dingos and bats and were able to feed paddy melons and swamp wallabies. Students also came face to face with a koala, echidna and wombat and enjoyed sharing their knowledge learnt during our “What’s Alive” unit. A fabulous day was had by all, and many thanks to all the parents who came along and helped out. KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION EVENING 2011 Do you have a child beginning Kindergarten in 2011? HEALTHY EATING AT SCHOOL Children in the first years of school are busy and energetic, so they need nutritious lunches and snacks during the school day. We are more aware about the dangers of allergies nowadays and it’s vital that you let the school and teacher know if your child is allergic to particular foods. Here are some tips to encourage happy and healthy children: • The best way to get your children to eat lunch at

school is to pack what you know they like. Even then they may be too excited or busy to eat all of their lunch.

• Encourage them to bring home uneaten food, so you can monitor whether they’re getting a balanced diet and adjust their food intake at home if necessary.

• Children often don’t eat things that go soggy, for example tomato sandwiches—but tiny cherry tomatoes in a salad of lettuce, celery, cheese, gherkin and grated carrot can make an enjoyable lunch if the child likes these.

• Children can bring water in a drink bottle. Water is the best thirst quencher, and milk and juice do not always survive well in warm classrooms.

• Pack a frozen drink in the lunch box in summer to help keep food cold.

• Keep foods separate and well wrapped, making sure that little fingers can open each pack.

• Include an occasional treat. It is unwise to send food to be shared with your child’s friends, because the food may present a problem in relation to allergies or cultural differences. Keep shared foods for celebrations at home, where you can get agreement from the parents of participating children.
