Sword, eagle symbolizes Class of 2005
AOG congratulates the Class of 2005
By Lt. Gen. John RosaAcademy Superintendent
The young men and women grad-uating in the Class of 2005 have animage of a sword and eagle on theirclass rings that symbolizes their veryessence.
They entered the Air ForceAcademy during a period of relativepeace — the last class to do so — andthey depart after countless tests andmeasures of academic, physical andmoral standards, having proven fit totake their places as leaders of today’sAir Force.
Some will go on to pilot training, graduate studies and other schools;others will be assigned to serve
America on the cutting edge offreedom’s frontiers. Wherever they go,know that they have made sacrificesand put forth the effort necessary toface today’s challenges to our nation’sdefense.
Each cadet of the Class of 2005 hasproven repeatedly that he or she has thespirit of a warrior so vital to the successof our modern Aerospace ExpeditionaryForce. They now go forward to taketheir places as leaders. Motivating themis a determination to protect each of youhere today, an unshakeable andunselfish resolve to preserve our greatnation and way of life.
They have passed the tests andwill excel at whatever lies ahead, and I
thank their families and friends who
have given them the unswerving
support and encouragement that has
sustained them through the rigors of
the past four years. They consistently
met muster and weathered contro-
versy; they will leave a lasting imprint
of positive change on the operations
and traditions of this great institution.
As America pursues a forward
strategy of freedom and confronts the
allies of terror, we look to the Class of
2005 with great hope and expectations
to create a peaceful world in which
liberty replaces tyranny and terror. I
have every confidence they will deliver.Lt. Gen. John Rosa, AcademySuperintendent.

Squadron 33 is ‘outstandingsquadron’ of the yearBy Eddie KovskyAcademy Spirit staff
Cadet Squadron 33“Rats” has been recog-nized the outstandingsquadron of the year. This highest levelunit award was lastgiven to CS-33 in2000.
The award wasfirst established in1959, and is spon-sored by the Air ForceAssociation to recog-nize the squadronachieving the highest stan-dards in military, academic, andathletic excellence. The award recog-nizes teamwork and reinforces amongcadets that every member of the teamcounts and that everyone’s performancematters to the success of the group.
“To have our 113 cadets come outon top of 4,000 plus of America’s finestyoung people sends a real statementabout the quality of the cadets ofSquadron 33,” said Maj. JonathanTamblyn, CS-33 air officercommanding. “Other squadrons didmany other things better than we did thisyear. I think the focus on leadershipand the chain of command made a bigdifference. Overall the Cadets of CS-33demonstrated phenomenal character.
There are a lot of cadet squadrons doinga great job of producing leaders of char-acter and I am humbled to have madeit to the top this year.”
The outstanding squadron was thirdbest Intramural Athletics Squadron andAthletic Excellence Squadron this year, and tied with CS-27 “Thunderbirds”for the Leadership and ScholarshipSquadron Award.
Cadet Squadron 33 was presentedwith the Outstanding Squadron Trophy,a plaque, and a blue streamer with goldlettering for use on the unit flag duringparades.

The Thunderbird demonstration team consists ofsix aircraft, performing formation flying and solo routines. The four-aircraft diamond formation demonstrates thetraining and precision of Air Force pilots, while thesolos highlight the maximum capabilities of the F-16Fighting Falcon. The pilots perform approximately 40maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, includingground and air, runs about one hour.
The Thunderbirds’ squadron is an Air CombatCommand unit comprised of eight pilots (six are demon-stration pilots), four support officers, and approximately120 Active-duty, Air National Guard and Reserve enlistedpersonnel.

From all of the applicants, 4-5 members are selected to demonstrate their flying abil-ities and compete for one of the three availabledemonstration positions. Nearly a third of all personnelare replaced each year, providing a constant mix ofexperience levels.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a multi-role fighterbuilt by Lockheed Martin. The plane has a 32 footwingspan and is capable of a maximum speed of 1,500miles per hour (Mach 2 at altitude). The F-16 wasdeployed in 1979, and the Air Force currently has 809in service.
The F-16s used by the Thunderbirds have been
modified to accommodate the smoke oil system, whichincludes the removal of the 20mm cannon. The paintscheme is also unique to the Thunderbirds. Otherwise, the aircraft that the squadron flies are the same as thosein the Air Force. Each Thunderbird aircraft is capableof returning to combat status within 72 hours.
To be able to perform, the Thunderbirds must have
at least five nautical miles of visibility horizontally fromthe show center and a minimum cloud ceiling of 1,500feet. At these minimums, the Thunderbirds can performa limited number of maneuvers in what is called a “flat”show. With a minimum ceiling of 8,000 feet and visi-bility of five nautical miles, the Thunderbirds can performtheir “high” show, which includes all maneuvers.

More than 900 Air Force Academycadets will graduate Wednesday. Mostwill accept their diplomas, toss their hatsand prepare for the start of their Air Forcecareer, however, for two cadets, the roadwill take a slightly different turn.
Cadets 1st Class Zach Walter, CadetSquadron 34, and Chuck Casey, CadetSquadron 33, are two of eight graduatingcadets cross commissioning into anotherservice, both to the Marine Corps.
Although their reasons for choosingto cross out of the blue may differ slightly, both their decisions were driven by astrong passion to lead.
“I initially came into the military forthe leadership, to serve my country andto be a fighter pilot,” said Cadet Walter,22, Kempton, Pa. “Until March of mysecond degree year, I wanted to be a pilot. But, then I took a step back and askedmyself what I really wanted to do. I decidedthat leadership is a passion of mine andas a fighter pilot I wouldn’t get as manyopportunities to lead.
“I felt I could make a differenceleading troops on the ground, and I alsoliked the physical aspect of it,” he said. “So,I had to make a decision between theArmy and Marine Corps. I talked to Army
and Marine Corps officers, learned asmuch as I could, and then made a choice.”
Cadets Walter and Casey met in thecadet honor guard during their fourthdegree year and have maintained a friend-ship since.
“We have always supported each otherand helped each other out in achieving ourgoals,” said Cadet Casey, a prior-enlistedF-15 avionics apprentice who also wantedto be a pilot after graduation.
“The Air Force Academy has donesuch a good job of preparing me, but I’mlooking for something more in the way ofleadership,” he said. “During my firstdegree summer, I started focusing lesson being a pilot and more on what I reallywanted, which is a leadership role. As Ithought about it, the leadership opportu-nities the Marine Corps offers appealedto me more and more.”
According to Marine Maj. GlennTakabayashi, Cadet Group 4 deputycommander, in a normal cross commis-sioning situation, a cadet will approach aMarine representative prior to their FirstClass Summer. The cadet will train withthe Marine and graduates from theprevious year. During the first classsummer, the cadet will attend the MarineOfficer Candidate School, a programcalled Bulldog. If the cadet successfullycompletes the course, they have earned the
right to be a Marine.“As a Marine, I look for the true
warrior spirit,” said Major Takabayashi, who screens those interested in crosscommissioning to the Corps. “I am lookingfor a more aggressive cadet; one thatwants to truly develop his or her leader-ship skills and enjoy the privilege ofleading Marines.”
Because Cadets Walter and Caseymade their individual decisions to crosscommission during the summer of thefirst degree year, they were too late toparticipate in Bulldog. So, they will packtheir gear and report to Quantico, Va., forOCS after graduation.
“Only the Marine Corps requires thecadets to attend a commissioning quali-fier,” added Major Takabayashi. “TheNavy and Army only require an inter-view.”
After completion of OCS, the cadetswill attend a course which provides newOCS graduates with a foundation ofprofessional knowledge and skills neces-sary for officers to effectively commandand lead Marines. The course, known asThe Basic School, will last for six months, when the new Marines will learn whatcareer field, or military occupation skill, they will be assigned to.
Cadet Walter is set on being aninfantry officer.
“I want to be able to impact thegreatest number of people I can,” he said.“Part of leadership is passion in people,so I’ll go wherever I can impact the mostlives.”
Cadet Casey is trying to keep an openmind.
“I’m really trying to keep my optionsopen,” said Cadet Casey. “If I had tochoose right now I’d choose infantry, butthe bottom line is that I’m going in to bea Marine.”
As Cadets Casey and Walter shedtheir wings and depart to join the Marines, they take with them a wealth of knowledgeand the memories of an unforgettableAcademy experience.
“It’s been phenomenal,” said CadetWalter. “I look back on my experienceshere very fondly. It’s been the hardestthing I’ve ever done, but also the mostrewarding. I’m really happy with whereI am now.”
“I feel like I can go into any situationand do a pretty good job of being a leader,”said Cadet Casey. “I didn’t have that confi-dence when I first came to the Academy.I’m really satisfied with my intellectualgrowth, but the friends I’ve made and thepeople I’ve met are why I’m leaving theAcademy a better person.”

FalconSat manager reflects on years as cadetBy Eddie KovskyAcademy Spirit staff
Cadet 1st Class Emily Riley has accomplished a lotsince her arrival at basic cadet training four years ago.
This cadet has been involved with the FalconSatprogram since the beginning of the 2004-2005 academicyear. She has been one two program managers.
The FalconSAT program is currently building twosatellites, FS-2 and FS-3. Her primary responsibility isto ensure that the FS-2 satellite is prepared for its August2005 launch date. FalconSat-2 will measure space plasmaphenomena which can adversely affect space-basedcommunications, including the Global Positioning Systemand other civil and military communications. The DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency has arranged fora private company to launch the cadet-built satellitefrom the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Test Site onKwajalien Atoll, in the Marshall Islands.
To meet all the launch requirements and preparationrequired, Cadet Riley works with cadet astro engineersand cadet space operators. So far, they’ve changed theantenna, created a launch operations plan, completed allfinal hardware checks and managed all the documenta-tion required between the Academy program and thelaunch vehicle providers, Space ExplorationsTechnologies.
“I was formally introduced to the program by mymanagement teacher and mentor,” said Cadet Riley.“Then, after an interview and selection process, I waschosen for the program manager position. However, Iblame my selection on living with an astro major for asemester. The late nights she spent studying and someof her vocabulary must have rubbed off on me. I wasdrawn to the program because I’ve always had an interestin space and wanted a chance to actually apply some ofthe management tools that I’ve been studying as anoperations research major.”
But it’s not just the professional accomplishmentsthat have defined the last four years. There have beenplenty of recreational and learning opportunities too.
“I really appreciate all the opportunities the Academyand the people here have offered me,” said Cadet Riley.“Since I’ve been here I’ve learned to rock climb and, tomy parents’lament, ice climb. I’ve learned alpine campingand summitted several fourteeners.”
A favorite job she has held during her cadet careerhas been evasion flight commander.
“Working evasion, I learned to drive a Humvee, cook omelets without a frying pan, and fix anything withduct tape and 550 cord,” she said.
After graduation, Cadet Riley moves on to pilottraining at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas.

Every cadet picks their commissioningofficer for different reasons. Oath takingshappen at all corners of the Academy justafter the clock passes midnight themorning of graduation day.
Cadet 1st Class Cindy Nieves, CadetSquadron 10, is hoping for her step-father,Navy Lt. Cmdr. Theodore Smith, now theoperations officer for a battalion of 440Navy personnel serving in Kuwait andIraq, to do the honors from his station in
the Middle East.“I found out in October that my step
dad would not be able to commission mebecause he would be going to Iraq inJanuary,” said the 23-year-old LatinAmerica Foreign Area Studies major. “Itwas something that I had been lookingforward to my entire cadet career and hadsuddenly been taken away.”
She said her family talked about herstep-dad possibly having the opportunityto take leave while serving his tour.
“It kept me hopeful but we later foundout that it would not be for certain,” said
the former military family member. “It wasmy step-dad’s idea to try to do the commis-sioning ceremony via video telephoneconference, but he waited until he got toKuwait to see if his unit had that kind ofcapability.”
A few weeks into his tour in January, her step-father told her that he had thecapability and that he had talked to a fewpeople about the idea.
“About a month ago he told me thathe has talked to some people and theywere excited about the event,” she said.“Navy News is even interested in doinga story on it as well.”
But it wasn’t yet a done deal.“I have a VTC request in the commu-
nications squadron that is awaitingapproval by the government,” said thecadet, who will be assigned as a mainte-nance officer at Luke AFB, Ariz., followinggraduation.
Tentative thoughts are for her to reportto Fairchild Hall, where the number herstep-dad can be reached at will be dialedand the oath will be made.
If everything works out, the oath willbe administered from across the world atmidnight June 1 in Fairchild Hall’sCommunications Squadron ConferenceRoom.
“For me, it is important to have thatofficer that has impacted your life and isa role model which you wish to emulatein your pending career start your career,”
said the cadet. “Growing up, I realized thatmy step-dad has been that role model. Not just because he raised me but becausehe is someone I respect and someone I havelooked up to. Besides, there is no one elseI would rather have commission me.”
She was selected to be on the U.S.Women’s Style and Accuracy Team andwill be in Moscow, Russia, in July for theWorld Cup Meet. She is also a memberof the Wings of Blue Parachute Team andaccuracy is one of the competition eventsshe excelled at as a cadet.
Her post graduation plans are in focus.“Besides jumping out of planes I plan
on doing a lot of relaxing,” she said.

that larger, publicly held builders produce every year. So we can give each customer

we can take the long-term perspective. We can invest in research and new design
ideas. We can create something unique for every neighborhood. Do something special
