JOHN ROBOTHAN, a stunt double for Chevy Chase, dangles on the face of Hoover Dam during a scene in an upcoming movie.

How hot was it? If youwere California stuntman JohnRobothan, strapped on the sun-baked face of Hoover Dam, itwas nearly 135 degrees hot.
Robothan, 39, of SantaBarbara, lay flat against thegiant wall for 30 minutesTuesday afternoon, filming astunt for the ,new Chevy Chasemovie, "VegasVacation."
Robothan, who has been astunt double for Chase for 10years, was attached to a seriesof ropes and bolts 90 feet downthe face of the dam and 637 feetabove the dam's power plant. Hegave the appearance of havingno support, but actually wassecured by a hamecs under hisclothing that was connected tothree bolts.
''You only need one (bolt),but we take all precautions,"Robothan said. "We're notdaredevils."
Film crews with Warner Bros.did several takes of a scene inwhich Chase swings on a rope I
from the Arizona side of LakeMead, slams into the face of themammoth structure and then 'turns to wave at his familywho watches horrified from thenearby visitor's center.
Hundreds ot people gatheredto watch the filming and express
•amazement at Robothan's grittystunt.
After climbing back up Oila rope to the top of the dam;Robothan said the stunt wasabout as tough as any he had everdone, but he had full confidencein the riggers who set up theshot.
"I was never in any trouble,'!said Robothan, perspiringprofusely. "You are just as goodas your riggers,"
Was he even a littlefrightened?
"I have to admit, it wasdefinitely an eye opener whenyou look down there," saidRobothan, a 20-year stuntveteran.
The show,which 'also featuresBeverly D'Angelo and RandyQuaid, will be filming in Las.Vegas for several more weeks.
