Pat Buzzard (’92)oftenreviewedBillboardMagazineaspartofhisdutiesasprogrammanageratClarion’sWCCBstudentradiostation.NowhelooksatBillboardtoseehowhighhisband“SavingJane”willclimbonthenation’smostpopularsongchart. Basedonthesuccessof“GirlNextDoor,”thebandislookingforwardtocontinuingappearanceonthecharts.Risingtothetoptwentyonsomecharts,theband’sfollow-uprelease,“Happy,”isalsoexpectedtodowell. Famewasaseven-yearovernightsensationforBuzzardandtheroadtosuccessstartedatClarion. “Istartedplayingguitarinmysophomoreyear.IwasinanumberofpartybandsandweplayedinbasementpartiesaroundClarionandthat’showwegotourfanbase.”Asprogramdirector,healsousedWCCBtopromotehisbands. HismostpopularbandatClarionwas88AD,namedaftertheirapartmentsonGreenvilleAvenueacrossfromTippinGymnasium,88GreenvilleApartmentsA&D. AcommunicationmajoratClarion,Buzzardhasbeenabletousethedegreeineveryphaseofhislife. “Inmorewaysthanone,Clarionwasauniversitythatencouragedstudentstobeactivethroughitsoutsideactivities.Youcouldprobablyjustshowupandcollectyourco-curriculars,butyouwerealsopresentedwithreallifesituationsandgotachancetoseehowthingsreallywork.Yougotanopportunitytoseehowpeoplereallywork.Clarionwasphenomenalinallowingstudentstocarryoutthingsontheirown.Weweregivenachancetorunthingslikeourown.Wetreateditasourownanddevelopedprideandaccountability.PrideandaccountabilityaretwoofthemainthingsIgotfromClarion.” OriginallyfromEastBrady,Pa.,hemovedbackhomeaftergraduationandbecamepartofacountryband,NorthofDixie. HelatermovedtoColumbus,Ohio,wherehewasdeterminedtogive“normallife”ashot,but“thatlittlemusiciandemonwouldn’tdie.”HeworkedasaconsultantforAutoRepairCenterssuchasAMCO.
Whenhewasn’tathis“day”job,hekepthisinterestaliveinmusicbyplayingtheacousticmusicsceneinbarsaroundthecollegetownofColumbus. Fatestruckaboutsevenyearsagowhenhewasatanall-musicianbeachpartyandhewasplayinghisguitararoundthecampfirewhensomeoneaskedifanyoneknewthewordsofBobbiMcGee.SavingJane’sWebsitetalksaboutthemeeting. “Throughahazeofwoodsmokeandwoozylatenightchorus,shealmostdidn’thearthequestion.ButforsomereasonMartiDodsonsatbackdownatthatcampfireandmadeanewfriend. “Atthetime,MartiwasacollegestudentatOhioStateUniversity,whereshesatinthebackofherclasseswritingsongsinsteadoftakingnotes.Shebroughtthewordstolifeontherooftopofherbrokendownapartmentbuilding,playingaroundwithacheapguitarandabeginner’schordbook. “Onesummernightsheendedupatacampfirepartyhostedbyalocalmusician.Self–consciousaroundthegroupofprofessionalplayers,Martiwassittingquietly,listeningtoanincredibleguitarplayershehadjustmetnamedPatBuzzard.ItwasalmosttimetogoonhomewhenMarti´sgirlfriendpipedup,‘Shecansing’. “Beforelong,PatandMartimadeamusicalconnectionthatoutlastedthecampfireandforgedintoadeepfriendship,”recountstheWebsite.BuzzardsaystheconnectionwithDodsonwasastrongoneandcontinuestoday.Twoyearsafterthemeetingonthebeach,thebandwasformedandcontinuedtoevolvedoverthelastfiveyears. “Wewereoriginallymoreofanalternativerockband,butwe’vechangedtosatisfyourfans,”saysBuzzard.“WewentfromaHole-typebandtomoreofaCountingCrows.” Thebandisdriveninternally,controllingitsproductionsound,Website,anddirectionoftheband.Theyrecordedthreeindependentalbumsforlimitedrelease,oftensellingthematconcerts.Itwasastruggle,butallofthebandmemberssawthebiggerpictureandbelievedtheirsuccesswasbiggerthananyoneofthem.
“Thisisaverytight-knitgroupofpeopleandwewanttohelpdrivetheship,”saysBuzzard.“Ihategoingtoaregularjob,butthisisdifferent.Ifyoudidn’tloveit,youcouldn’tdoit.” Theentirebandhaddayjobsand,thispastJanuary,allofthemalsodecidedtobecomefull-timemusiciansandgiveitonemoretrytoreachthebigtime. Theywerestartingtogetnoticedbyrecordcompaniesaftertheyappearedonpopularcharts.Thesamecompaniesthatpaidnoattentionwhiletheystruggledwerenowinterested. “Itwasatoughdecisiontoleaptoamajorlabel,butitreallyisamatterofdistribution,”saysBuzzard.“Youcanhaveasonginthetop20sasanindependentartist,butthereisnoplacetobuyit.Wedidn’thavethemoneytotourextensively.” ThetimehadcometomaketheswitchtoamajorlabelandUniversalsignedSavingJane.“Itwasjusttimetomakethedecisionandwewereallbattlingfathertime.Howmuchlongercouldwedothis?”askedPat. Thenewlabelallowedthemtotourandplaylargerlocationsthaninthepast.Amomentumisalsobuildingfortheband’smusic.Thenewrecognitionencouragesmoreradiostationstoplaytheirmusicandsalesfollow. Buzzardexplainsprogrammingdecisionsaremadeatindividualstationsandlargerconglomeratesthatownmanystationsoftenhaveonepersonthatmakesdecisions.Therearekeystationsthatarewatchedandotherstationsfollowwithairplay. “WNCI”inColumbusalwayssupportedus,butneverbabiedus,”hesays.“Theytoldustogetagoodproductandwe’llsupportyou100percent.Theywerealsooneofthosekeystationseveryonewatches.” ItmayevenbealittleironicthatpartofhisfuturesuccessdependsonpeopledoingthesamejobhedidatWCCBinClarionasprogramdirector,butherelishesthefutureandlifewiththeband. “I’vewaitedmywholelifeforthis.”

Clarionproudlyshowcasesitsexcellence,whetherthroughitsrecordnumberofprofessionalaccreditationsandrankingsfromnationalorganizationstotheaccomplishmentsofitsstudentsandfaculty. Apublicserieswascreatedthisyeartodisplayandhonorsomeoftheaccomplishmentsrelatedtoacademicexcellence,includingtheHonorsProgram,UndergraduateResearchConference,AcademicConvocation,GraduateResearchSeminarandReception,andtheDr.SyedAli-ZaidiAwardforAcademicExcellence. “Itwasagreatsuccess,”saidProvostLindaNolanaboutthefive-dayeventcelebratingstudentrecognitionandresearch.

Student And Faculty Research Highlighted “Thecelebrationplacedmoreemphasisonstudentandfacultyresearch,”saidNolan.“Theresultwasahighernumberofundergraduatestudentsparticipatinginresearch.” Thenumbersreflectthatfact:30HonorsProgramstudentspresentedtheirseniorprojects;74undergraduatestudents,eitherindividuallyoringroupspresentedresearch;and69graduatestudents,eitherindividuallyoringroups,presentedresearch.Attheotherevents,11graduatestudentswererecognizedastheoutstandingmembersoftheirindividualdepartments;17seniorswerenominatedfortheAli-ZaidiAward;andallstudentscholarshipwinnersandthosewithoutstandingacademicachievementwererecognizedattheAcademicConvocation. “ThefirstyearoftheAcademicExcellenceSerieshighlightedandfocusedonstudentactivitieswithfaculty,”saidNolan.“TherecognitionreachesbeyondcampustotheClarioncommunityandtothehometownsofthestudents.HighschoolstudentswerevisitingcampusduringtheUndergraduateResearchConferenceandthatshouldhelpClarionwithrecruiting.” Manyoftheresearchprojectsweremadepossiblethrough$23,000ingrantsfromNolan’sofficetosupportstudentresearchprojectsandstudyabroad. “Emphasizingstudentprojectshelpstopropelstudentsintothebestprofessionalandgraduateschools,”saidNolan.“Anincreasingnumberofourundergraduatesaregoingtograduateschoolsandbeingawardedscholarships.” PerhapsthemostprominentexamplewasJasonGrieshoberofEriereceivingan$80,000AcademicMeritAwardtoattendTempleUniversityMedicalSchool.Approximately8,000to10,000applicationsaremadetotheTempleUniversityMedicalSchooleachyear,butonly150areaccepted. “Researchisallapartofthepackage,anotherpieceofthepuzzlethatmakesstudentssuccessful,”saidDr.SteveHarris,interimassociatedeanoftheCollegeofArtsandSciences,whohelpedtoorganizetheseries.“Themorestudentsdobeyondtheclassroomwillmakeadifferenceforthemlater.Thesoonertheystart,themoredoorswillbeopenforthem.” “Theresponsibilitytocompleteresearchmakesarealdifferenceinastudent’scareer.Theyhavetotakeintoaccounthowtheresearchwillbedoneandtheyhavetoworkwithotherpeopleinthefieldorlaboratory.Teamworkcomesintoplayanditpaysdividendsinthelongrun.Workingwithanadvisortomeetdeadlinesandprepareforthisconferenceisasignificantactivity.”

Debate Team Claims Individual National Team Title TheClarionUniversityDebateTeamclaimedanindividualteamnationalchampionshipandasecondconsecutivefourth-placefinishattheAmericanDebateAssociationNationalChampionship.Bill Dummett andJessica ZezulewiczbecameClarionUniversity’sfirstnationalchampionshipdebateteam,winningthejuniorvarsityindividualteamcompetition.TheperformancehelpedClarionintofourthplaceinthefinalGrandSweepstakesrankingsfor2005-2006. Zezulewicz,whoreceivedherdegreeinspeechcommunication,isadaughterofRegisandDoraleeZezulewiczofPittsburghandisagraduateofKeystoneOaksHighSchool. Clarion University President Joseph Grunenwald celebrated the success of students at a recent meeting of the Clarion University Council of Trustees, naming his top ten list of student accomplishments.
“These are the things that make me smile with pride,” said Grunenwald. “This is what we’re all about in terms of bringing out the best in students. We have a lot of students who have done well and these are just a few of them.”

Fromtheveryyoungtotheveryold,theClarionUniversityHealthScienceEducationCenter(HSEC)istouchingthelivesofpeoplethroughoutPennsylvania. Focusingonhealthpromotionwithtopicssuchastobacco,drug,alcohol,fitness,nutrition,andgeneralhealthmessages,theHSECpromotesgoodhealthchoicesforeveryone.Preventativemeasuresandeducationhelpreducefuturehealthproblemsandrelatedcosts.Simplyput,thepurposeoftheHealthScienceEducationCenteristopromotehealthylifestylesthroughinteractiveeducationalprogramsforindividualsofallages. Clarion’sHSECisoneofonlythreehealtheducationcentersinPennsylvaniaand38nationwideandtakesadifferentapproachfromtheothersindeliveringitsmessage. “WearetheonlyHSECthatdoesnotchargeforitsprograms,”saidDr.NancyFalvo,HSECdirector.“Weareexpandingthethingsthatwearedoingandcontinuetomaintainouroriginalfundingratesatthenationalandstatelevels.” WiththePennsylvaniaDepartmentofHealthasamajorstakeholder,theHSECoperatesprogramswithina40-mileradiusofClarion,anumberofstatewidehealtheducationprograms,andhasevenlaunchedapartnershipwithalocalnursinghome. TheClarionUniversityHSECopenedinMay2002withagoalofimprovingthehealthofitscitizens,startingwithchildren.ItmovedintoitscurrentMainStreetfacilitiesapproximatelytwoyearsago.Educationalprogramsareofferedatthecenterandontheroadatvariousschoolsintheservicearea. ClarionUniversitywasalsochosentohostoneofsixregionalmeetingsthroughouttheCommonwealthinMayconcerningPandemicplanningrelatedtothethreatofbirdflu.Clarionhasoffereditseducationalexpertiseinconnectionwithpandemicplanning.
Starting Out With Schools “Ourstandardprogramsfocusonpre-schoolthrough12thgrade,whereschoolgroupscometothecenterforprograms,”saidFalvo.“Wealsogototheschoolstopresent.” PartnershipshavebeenformedwithRiverviewIntermediateUnit6,localschooldistricts,privateconcernssuchasBeverlyHealthCare,andcommunityorganizationssuchasClarionCountyPromisetoprovidehealtheducationprograms.HSEChasalsoprovidedprogramsforcommunityadultsandprovidedindividualizedprogramsforteacherin-servicedays,wellnessfairs,andnursinghomes.Duringthesummer,thecenteroffersnumerouscampsforchildren. HSECanditspartnerslaunchedYouthQuest2006April25-26inHarrisburg.Aspartofthe“ShoeCampaign,”1,000highschoolstudentsfromacrossPennsylvaniatraveledtoHarrisburgtomeetwiththeirlegislatorsandplace20,000pairsofshoesonthecapitalstepsasareminderofthenumberofpeoplewhodieinPennsylvaniaeachyearduetotobacco-relatedillnesses.HSECsentout12,000boxestoconstituentstoinvolvetheminthecampaign. Clarion Leads Pennsylvania Whileprimarilyfocusingontheseandothercommunityefforts,theClarionUniversityHSECalsoparticipatesinseveralstatewideprograms:
• Pennsylvania Students Working Against Tobacco (PA-SWAT)involvesall14-memberinstitutionsofthePennsylvaniaStateSystemofHigherEducation,includingClarionUniversity,and20othercollegecampusesstatewideinastudentledanti-tobaccocampaign.TheprogramwasinitiatedthroughthePennsylvaniaDepartmentofHealth’sPennsylvaniaSmokingCessationandPreventionCampaign(PSCPC).ClarionUniversityhostedthePA-SWATTobaccoSummitinMay.
• Busted!,Pennsylvania’sofficialyouthanti-tobaccomovement,iscoordinated
statewidebyClarion’sHSEC.Theprogramstartedwith400highschoolstudents,aged14-17,whogottogethertoshareacommongoal:theeliminationofmanipulationbybigtobacco.ThemissionofBusted!istobandtogethertokeepmorepeoplefromusingtobacco.Today,morethan2,700youthareregisteredwithBusted!.
• Project Xisananti-tobaccoassemblyprogramdesignedbyClarion’s
HSEC.Theanimatedprogramisalongthelinesofthemovie“TheMatrix,”withelementsoftelevision’s“CSI”programs.Anagent,knownasNoahGoodman,worksforsmoke-freeschoolsintheanti-tobaccoprogramintendedforstudentsingradesfourthroughseven,presentedona15-footscreenusingbackprojection.
Theinteractivestyleisutilizedsoyoungpeoplecangivetheirideasand
opinionstohelpuncoverthetruthabouttobaccoproducts.• Shape Up PennsylvaniarecentlyinvolvedClarionUniversityemployees.
ShapeUpPennsylvaniaisafive-monthcompetitionthatencouragesPennsylvanianstodevelophealthyeatinghabitsandincreasephysicalactivityinanefforttocombatdetrimentalobesitytrends.Participantsformteamsofupto10membersandengageinfriendlycompetitionwithteamsstatewide.TwohundredandfifteenClarionUniversityemployees,fromadministrativetostafflevels,voluntarilyparticipatedinthehealthandfitnessprogram.

• HSEC work-study students,underthedirectionofRandyRice,conducted
theAdultTobaccoSurvey(ATS)usingtheHSEC’scomputercenter.Erie,McKean,andPhiladelphiacountiesarebeingsurveyedtodeterminesmokinghabits,workingenvironmenttobaccouse,socialinfluencesofsmoking,anduseofothertobaccoproducts.ItisexpectedthatthePennsylvaniaDepartmentofHealthwillcontinuewiththeATSin2007.
Seniors Newest Customers SeniorcitizensarethenewestcustomersfortheClarionUniversityHSEC. HSEC,incollaborationwithBeverlyHealthCareofClarion,hassetupthreecomputerstationsinthenursinghomeforusebytheresidents.Computerclassesfortheresidentsarebeingscheduledandanyoneinterestedwillbeassistedinsettingupane-mailaccount. “WehaveacomputerlabopentothepublicatHSEC,buttheBeverlyresidentscan’tcomeheretouseit,sowearetakingthelabtothem,”saidRandyRice,assistantdirectorofresearchanddevelopmentforHSEC.“Weseethisasanopportunityforthemtostayintouchwiththeirfamily.” ThedecisiontopursuetheprogramwithBeverlyHealthCarewasstartedbyDr.NancyFalvo,directorofHSEC,whoisalsoontheBeverlyHealthCareadvisoryboard. “Communicationor,morespecifically,alackofcommunication,wasidentifiedasasignificantproblemfortheresidents,”saidFalvo.“Thisisoneofthosefeel-goodthingsthatwearegladtobedoing.” ThreecomputersfromHSECwereinstalledandRiceviewstheserviceasawayfortheresidentstokeepintouchwiththeirfamiliesviae-mail,gainaccesstomedicalinformationandforms,and,ofcourse,surftheInternetforfun,justlikeeveryoneelse.HesaidmanyoftheresidentsareveteransofWorldWarIIandhaveenjoyedlookinguptheirunits,ships,andothermilitaryinformationnowon-line.Othershavespenttimelookingatantiquecarsites. “Ourmissionistoprovideserviceforpeopleofallages,”saidRiceaboutHSEC.“Tensofthousandsofyoungpeoplehavealreadybenefitedfromourservices.Thisisourfirstsubstantialopportunitytoengageseniorcitizens.”

AutumnatClarion.ALF.Reunions.Carnivalfood.Fun.Ghosts. Ghosts? Thequesttofindghosts,goblins,andthingsthatgobumpinthenighthasbecomeoneofClarionUniversity’smostpopularfallevents. Remainingunsolved,butstillmystifying,arethequestions: WhohashauntedHartChapelforsomanyyears? WhydoestheghostofaJapanesekamikazepilotwanderFoundersHall? WhydoghostsinhabitresidencehallssuchasBecht,Givan,Ralston,andWilkinson? Allofthesetopicsareaddressed,butleftopenendedduringthefree“GhostsofClarionUniversity”walkingtour,held,appropriatelyenough,closetoHalloweeneachofthelasttwoyears. ThethirdeditionoftheGhostsofClarionUniversitywalkingtourisscheduledforThursday,Oct.26,beginningat7p.m.inHartChapel.The2005tourdrewmorethan450participants,buildinguponthenearly400,whotooktheinauguralwalkin2004. ThetouristhebrainchildofDr.ToddPfannestiel,associateprofessorofhistoryandadvisortobothsponsoringorganizations,thePhiAlphaThetaHistoryHonorSocietyandtheHistoryClub.TheyarebackedbyanappropriationfromtheClarionUniversityStudentSenateandsupportfromtheOfficeofCampusLife. Pfannestiel,whobelieveshehasheardbangingnoiseinthewallfromoneoftheFoundersHall’stworesidentghosts,said,“Intwoyears,thiseventhasshownincreasingpopularity.In2006,ourtourwillexpandfromthesixcampussitestoincludenewstoriesofghostsinCarlsonLibrary,andoffcampusattheoldThetaChiHouse,nowtheFulmerHouse.
“Allofthestoriesaresomewhatbasedontruth.TheyhavebecomepartofClarionlore.Itisgoodtopassthemalongandsharethestorieswithnewstudents.” Clarion’smostfamousghostresidesinHartChapel,wherelegendrelatesaplaywrightfromnearbycametocampustostageanewworkstarringhiminaone-manshow.Followingahorrendousopeningnight,whichcrushedhisdreamsofacareeronBroadway,theupsetperformerbrokeintoHartChapelandhangedhimselffromtherafters. FoundersHallishometomultiplespirits.OnedatesbacktothebuildingoftheformerScienceHall,whichhasbeenusedasadormitory,classroom,andofficeareaoveritslonghistory.Aghostofadepartedstudent,whoneverperformedwellacademically,frequentsthebuilding,takingouthisfrustrationontheeducationalactivitiesofboththestudentsandfacultywhohaveusedthebuilding. ThesecondFoundersHall’sghostisinternational.AClarionprofessor,andWorldWarIIveteran,returnedfromthewarwithanartifactfromakamikazeattackonhisship.TheartifactfromthecrashwasdisplayedformanyyearspromptingtheJapaneseownertohauntthehallwaystryingtogetitback. Residencehallsarefrequenthabitatsofadditionalspirits.Becht,Givan,Ralston,andWilkinsonallhavetheirownghosts. Bechtmaybethemosthauntedspotoncampus.Thespiritofa“dormmom”namedMarthastillcontinuestowatchoverthewomenofBecht,inparticular,wardingoffpotentialgentlemencallers.Thesecondisayounggirl,kidnappedbyaBechtcafeteriaworker,whosebodywasneverfound.Thegirlcanbeheardmovingthroughthebuilding,playfullystealingcombsandturningonwaterfacetsinclosedrooms.
Wilkinsonholdsthespiritofadeceasedstudentwhocontinuestofrequenttheroominwhichshelived,sometimesplayingJimiHendrixmusic.Givan’sspiritsareinfamousformovingfurniturethroughtheroomsand,ononeoccasion,seeminglytryingtobreaktheirwaythroughthefloortogettotheresidentintheroombelow.Ralston,whichhousestheSilerCenterforchildcare,hastheghostofaplayfulsix-year-old,whorelivesthefunmomentsofherlifewanderingthroughtheresidencehallturningonshowersandleavingmarblesinherwake. ToursareconductedindoorsandoutdoorsandinvolvemoderatewalkingtootherhauntedsitessuchasMarwick-BoydandastudentrentalonGreenvilleAvenue.Studentsfromthetwohonorariesandvolunteerfacultymembersconducttoursingroupsleavingevery20minutesfromHartChapel.ThetourendsattheGemmellStudentComplexforrefreshments. Sometimes,theparticipantsgetalittlemorethantheybargainedforwhentheyagreetothetour.Lastfall’sactivitiesappearedtohavedisturbedtheHartChapelghost.Beforethetourbegan,afogmachinewasbeingtestedintheChapeltoensureitworkedproperly. “Wetestedintwice,andonthethirdtestrunthefirealarmwentoffintheChapel,”saidPfannestiel.“Thefogmachineissupposedtonotdisruptfirealarms,sowethinkwemayhavestirreduptheghostofHartChapel,andwedecidednottousethefogmachineonthetour!” Whatwillhappenin2006remainstobeseen.Perhapsoneoftheghostswillmakeanappearance.Buteveniftheydon’t,aneveningoffunisguaranteed. TheBuescherfamilyestablishedMercedesHomesin1983.Chairmanoftheboard,HowardBuescher,foundedthecompanyfollowing23yearsofexperienceinthehomebuildingindustry.Thecompanyisnamedafterhiswife,MercedesBuescher. Today,HowardBuescher’ssonsanddaughtersareresponsibleforthecompany’sday-to-dayoperations. TheApril2telecastofABCtelevisionnetwork’s“ExtremeMakeoverHomeEdition”chronicledhowSadieHolmesandherfivechildrenreceivedanewhomeandlocationforHolmes’non-profitorganization. Thehomewasbuiltina106-hourtimeperiodbetweenFeb.19-24byMercedesHomesofMelbourne,Fla.,whereJack Buescher (’82)istheregionalpresident.Buescherhasbeenadirectorofthecompanysinceitsinceptionin1985.Hehasmorethan20yearsofexperienceinthehomebuildingindustry. Theprogrampresentedthestoryof5,000volunteerscomingtogetherforaweektobuilda5,000square-foothomeandanadjacentnon-profitcenterforHolmesandherfivechildren,Jonathan,Jacob,Jeremiah,Emanuel,andEphesian,ranginginagefrom5to16. “Whenwewereapproachedby‘ExtremeMakeover:HomeEdition’tohelpbuildahomeforSadieandherkids,wecouldn’tpassuptheopportunitytohelp

‘Extreme Makeover’ Home Built By Grad’s Company
Perhapsthemostdifficultfieldinwhichtoachievesuccessisthatofprofessionalartist. Jeph Gurecka (’91)hasappliedhimselftoartandisreachingnewlevelsofrecognitioninhischosenfield. TheBrooklyn,N.Y.,basedartistwasfeaturedinthestylesectionoftheMay2006issueofEsquiremagazine,whichincludesaphotoofGureckaandtwopiecesofhisartwork. “Wecollectedsixrisingyoungpaintersandgavethemtheopportunitytoshowofftheirbestwork–andthebestofthesummersdressed-downstyles,”statestheprefacetothephotospread,“TheNewRogues.” “EsquirewenttoNewYorkCitygallerieslookingfortherightlookforthesection,”saidGurecka,whoisrepresentedby31GrandGallery. But,GureckabelieveshisrealrecognitionasanartistcamewiththereceiptoftheprestigiousPollock-KrasnerFoundationandAdolphandEstherGottliebFoundationgrants,avindicationofhisdecisiontoenterthedifficultworldofart. “Thesearegrantsofmerit,”saidGurecka.“Theymademefeelacceptedasaprofessionalartist.ItishardtogetanywhereinartandthislendsatouchoflegitimacytowhatIdo.” Asaconceptualartist,Gureckausesanarrayofmaterialsthathosthisideasoftransience,reflection,andtranscendentalstates.Manyofthematerialsaretemporarymediumsthatevokehistoricalpermanence. “Forthepast10yearsIhavebeenworkingonthe‘still-life’series,”saidGurecka.“Aratheropen-endedpursuitofhumanisticsymbolsandtheirmaterialrelationships,thematerialsusedinmysculptures,changeconstantlydependingonwhatmaterialissuitabletofulfilltheideaoftheproject. GureckacametoClarionUniversityundecidedaboutamajor,butwasattractedtothevarietyofliberalartsofferingsthatwereavailable. “Collegeisn’twhatIdesired,Iwantedtotravel,Iwantedfreedom,”recalledGurecka.“ItriedtostayawayfromacademiaandwhenIdecidedtogotocollege,Ifeltthefineartswasthebestforme.Therewasnostrictschedule.IprettymuchlivedforthemomentandexperimentedwithmaterialsandideasthatIwaspersonallyinvolvedwith.Iwasn’tconcernedwithacareer,justimprovinguponmycraftandinvestigationsintowhatwasinmyhead,andwhatitmeant.Itisaveryselfinvolvedandselfishpursuit.” GureckacreditsClarionprofessoremeritus,AndorP-Jobbforhelpinghimfindadirectionandavocabularyinthearts.“Dr.P-Jobbalsotaughtmejudoandsharedideasabouthowtoliveanartisticlifestyle,notjusthowtomakeart,”hesaid. Followinghisgraduation,GureckatraveledtheUnitedStatesandLatinAmericaandbefore
movingtoNewYork,livedheinKeyWest,Fla.HewasacceptedatthePrattInstituteofArtandDesign,Brooklyn,N.Y.,wherehereceivedhismasteroffineartsdegreein1996. “IwasengulfedbythewholeNewYorkscene,”recallsGurecka.“IwaspartofaBrooklyn-basedtheatrecompany,theDeanStreetFieldofOperation,andacted,wrote,anddesignedsets.” Whenthetroupedisbanded,Gureckaputmoreintensityintohisownartandexhibitingonamoreregularbasis.31GrandGalleryaskedtorepresenthimin2001andhasbeenessentialingettinghisworkshownbothnationallyandinternationally. During2005,GureckalivedintheCzechRepublicattheCastleTrebesice,artist-in-residence.
