FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As the weather gets colder I want to thank students and
parents for your support in wearing the school uniform. By
wearing the school uniform it assists staff in easily identifying
students and enhances a sense of pride within the school.
Further uniform items for winter can be purchased on
Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 2.30pm - 3.30pm.
Recently, a Discover Clarence evening was held for
parents and their child who are interested in enrolling at
Clarence High School for year 7 in 2020. There were many
parents who had questions regarding Out-of-Area
enrolments. It is a requirement of the Education Act that an
Out-of-Area Application form is completed addressing the
criteria. Please contact the office if you are interested in
applying or if you have any questions.
Finally, I would like to congratulate students who were the
recipients of certificates at the recent Industry and Pathway
Program celebration evening and it was a pleasure to attend
The Addams Family production at Rosny College and see our
past students embracing Year 11/12. Being part of teganna
enables us to support all students in their learning
endeavours and participate in their successes.
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend!
Alanna Green

CLARENCE HIGH SCHOOL & ROSE BAY HIGH SCHOOL YEAR 11/12 EXTENSION SCHOOL OPEN NIGHT & PARENT TEACHER EVENING
On Thursday 30 May, the Clarence and Rose Bay High School’s Year 11/12 Campus at 59 Cambridge Road, Bellerive held an Open Night and Parent Teacher Evening for students enrolled in the Industry Pathway Program. The evening provided the opportunity for students to showcase some of the work they have undertaken in their subjects (via subject displays) during the last two terms and for parents to have a discussion with teachers about their child’s progress. Food and refreshments were prepared and provided by the Year 12 Essential Cooking Skills class. A highlight of the evening was the awarding of certificates of congratulations to those students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the ethos of the program. The IPP Staff would particularly like to thank Mrs Robyn Storey (Principal, Rose Bay High School), Ms Alanna Green (Principal, Clarence High School), Mr Darren Sangwell (AST3 Transition/Extension, Rosny College) and all the parents who were able to come along and celebrate the students’ achievements. BREAKFAST – THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY
Breakfast, as the word suggests, literally means ‘breaking the fast’.
After going 10-12 hours overnight without food, children’s energy reserves are low
and their bodies and most importantly their brains, need fuel.
Without breakfast children (also adults!) can get irritable, restless and tired.
Kids who eat breakfast are more likely to:
have improved concentration and short term memory
be more focused
maintain a healthy weight
Apart from providing children with body and brain ‘fuel’, breakfast foods are good
sources of important nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as
protein and fibre.
BREAKFAST ON THE RUN
Sometimes there is just not time for your child to eat breakfast.
Breakfast ideas for ‘on the run’ could include:
a wholegrain cereal bar and a small fruit juice
a small tub of yogurt and a banana
a bag of dry cereal mixed with trail mix
Your child can eat these on the run and still arrive at school fuelled up.

EISTEDDFOD PARTICIPATION
On Tuesday 4 June we took four bands to compete in the City of Hobart Eisteddfod. The senior concert
band competed first, playing crowd favourites — Duel of Fates, Somewhere and Doctor Who.
Collegiate took out the title on the day. The senior stage band played well and Charlotte and Eliza played
a couple of great solos. They almost got the audience up and dancing when they broke out into
YMCA. Both the junior concert and stage bands were in the same section. The junior concert band
played Fireball, African Symphony and Pirates of the Caribbean. However it was the junior stage band who
came out the winners, winning the whole junior section with Kiss the Girl, All about That Bass and St.
Thomas featuring solos by Laura and Monique. It was a long day and the Clarence students were a credit
to the school in behaviour and performance.

SCIENCE NEWS
8 Stem
In Year 8 Science Technology and Engineering (STEM), students have been investigating the structure of
bridges. They have researched different types of bridges and the advantages and disadvantages of them.
They have discovered that some shapes are stronger than others and have explored this further through
mini paper bridge challenges. They are currently applying this knowledge to create a spaghetti bridge with a
span of 30cm that will hold the most weight.
8 Science
In second semester, Science Year 8 students have been undertaking a biology unit. Through this unit they
will examine different types of cells and micro-organisms under the microscope, learn about the organs of
the body and how they work within part of a system. Students have also had the opportunity to participate
in dissections which allows them to gain further insight in the structure and function of their organs.

Reminder to our school community that there is no
vehicle access of the side road near the administration
office and southern field between 8.30am – 3.30pm.
The roadway will only be open outside of these times
for deliveries or access.
A boom gate and signage has been installed to alert
vehicles of this change.
The school is responsible for student safety within our
learning environment. At all times student safety is
paramount. It is considered that vehicle traffic along this
laneway is a high risk to our student population. Your
support of this change is very much appreciated.
ARRANGEMENTS FOR STUDENT
LEAVING EARLY
If a student needs to leave school early parents are
asked to write a note. Students should get the
note counter-signed by their teacher and take the
note to Student Administration. Students may not
leave the school grounds during school hours
unless they bring a note. They must sign out at
Student Administration immediately before leaving.
If a parent rings the school to make arrangements
for students to leave early or to pass on end of day
messages, we ask that you give plenty of notice. At
all times we will do our best to pass on the
messages.
EARN & LEARN
As a Prefect initiative, Clarence High School is
once again participating in the Woolworths Earn
& Learn promotion and seeks support from our
families with collection of stickers. There is a
collection box at Woolworths Eastlands,
Woolworths Shoreline and one at the school
admin office. This program gives schools the
chance to earn amazing school equipment. Closes
on 25 June 2019.
