Dear Parent,

Excited chatter; steam rising from the swimming pool; talk of 100m times; adventures in

the woods. These are truly signs that we are in the middle of the summer term.

Comments such as “They were fun’ aptly describes the Year 6’s positive attitude to the

KS2 SATs throughout the week and despite terrible stories emerging in the national press

about tears and despair following some of the papers, Claremont pupils took the tests in

their stride.

Tuesday afternoon saw another of Mrs Harris Prior’s tea-time concerts. The children are

fortunate to have the opportunity to perform regularly on such occasions and it is always a

pleasure to see so many children performing with such ease. Many thanks to the parents

who support such events and to Mrs Harris-Prior and her team for putting together such a

varied programme.

Following the success of Open Day the school has been busy with children experiencing

taster days, ably looked after by the Claremont pupils. We are so pleased that prospective

parents and their children were really excited by what they saw when they visited

Claremont. Our pupils’ happiness and achievements are truly impressive and their pride in

the school as they lead tours is palpable.

The enrichment programme feels as if it has always been part of a Friday afternoon, with

the week ending with reflection during the assembly. This week the boy prefects reminded

us of the attributes required for teamwork. They had indeed worked as a team to put

together a concise and informative assembly.

4C returned safe and sound from their trip to St Omer. I had a lovely birthday with

flowers, champagne and a card signed by all of the children. The weather was sunny and we

were able to play on the beach at Boulogne. The children emptied the gift shop at

Nausicaa of all the furry toys on offer (apologies to their parents) including a four-foot

hammerhead shark and a crocodile. In terms of life skills that they developed, 4C parents

may be pleasantly surprised if they ask their son or daughter to make their own bed!

Tuesday and Wednesday see the beginning of our Common Entrance exams for the year 8

pupils as they sit their French listening and speaking exams. We wish them much luck, as

we do Lea-Lyne who will also be sitting her French GCSE at the age of 13!

Last Tuesday at 5pm, we had our Summer Afternoon Tea concert, featuring a wide range of instruments, ages and levels. The

performers gave some excellent performances, some were first timers to the stage. For all, it was a great confidence building

experience, not to mention coping with considerable heat. There were first time performances from the recently formed School

Band who opened the Concert with a fun rendition of Shake it Off and the Super Smiley Singers (a new Choir run by Rachel W

and Lauren P Year 6) who brought the concert to a sunny close with I'd like to teach the World to Sing and Bring me Sunshine.

Afterwards, performers and concert goers were treated to a feast of fabulous cakes provided by our amazing team in the

school kitchen. Thank you to all who support our concerts.

BBC Young Musician, Eat Your Heart out!

Tuesday, 26 April saw a wonderful musical mix performed by Claremont Senior Musicians. Canapes

and drinks were served before the audience took their seats for a delightful evening of

entertainment from our GCSE and A-Level Musicians, plus Music Scholars.

Claremont Brass Ensemble opened the event with some rousing 16th Century Dances. Tom Haythorn

followed with some exciting trumpet music, including Jerimiah Clarke's Prince of Denmark's

March. We had an array of piano music from Harry Gasson's rendition of Chopin's Waltz in B minor;

a very reflective Japanese piece by Rei Kondo performed by Thomas Dixon, whilst George Gasson

executed a fantastically lively Oscar Peterson piece entitled, Black Coffee.

Other instruments represented were the flute, on which Emily Winter performed Greensleeves and

Ecossaise; Neeve Wilson on violin played Nigel Hess's Ladies in Lavender, and we even had a double

drum off by our two Music Scholar drummers Freddie Latham-Coyle and Elliott Glynn!

Some lovely vocal numbers ensued with Marcus Kent singing, Mad World (accompanied very

ably by Maya Ostle); Chloe Fernando sang a great duet of Yours with Isobella Gibbon-

Brooks alongside, and a solo item of Mirror Man. Solly Lindars sang a wonderful rendition

of Say Something accompanying himself on piano. The Link band also performed a funk loop

a la jam style.

All in all a great and eclectic evening was enjoyed by all. BBC Young Musician 2016? It's got

nothing on these students!

Mrs Bartle, Head of Music

Senior First Aid Course On Monday, 9 May, 11 students, mostly sixth formers, completed their first aid qualification in Emergency First Aid. The

students involved are higher sports leaders (level 3) and they will be delivering sports sessions in the local community and

surrounding areas in a variety of sports. This qualification will enable the students to deliver basic first aid if needed. The

course taught them to deal with CPR, assessing and monitoring an injured person and how to deal with various emergencies,

including bleeding, burns, choking and seizures. The students were very interactive during the course and really got stuck in.

Well done to Floss Atherton, Meg Warden, Jade Murray, Phoebe Pullen, Summer Trevallion, Maddy Stichbury, George Klein,

Jonah Dickie, Lewis Stevens, Mashal Moeen and Ross Chambers (Year 11).

Matches

U15 Cricket v TWGGS on Tuesday, 3 May

This was the first ever cricket match for the girls. They have been working hard in training, which was clearly evident when

they played a great first match. Well done to Poppy Pearce, Sarah Crouch and Ellie Lee for some great bowling. The girls

batted well, but this is something we now need to focus on, as well as putting more speed behind our bowls. It was an excellent

first match for both teams.

Senior Rounders v Bethany on Thursday, 5 May

We opened up the batting with a positive start. Well done to Maddy Stichbury, Meg Warden and Izzie Marshall for all scoring

rounders. We had lost both our bowlers due to their other commitments, which allowed Izzie Marshall to step up and give

bowling a go. She did extremely well! Jess Carswell was excellent in deep field and Meg Warden and Jade Murray worked well

together on fourth post. Unfortunately we lost 16 - 13.5 but it was a good close game. Well done.

Pippa Blackman, Head of Girls’ Games

Student rides off with South East Leading Lady Novice Jockey Award Izzie Marshall, in Year 12, has enjoyed a fantastic first racing season, finishing the season with two wins and several placings.

The national racing fraternity operate several award schemes and for her achievements this season, Izzie has won the South

East Area’s Leading Lady Novice Jockey Award, a great achievement. Her award was presented during racing at Fontwell on

Thurday, 12 May; we wish her many congratulations.

1st X v Battle Abbey On the back of two tough league games against Bede’s and Roedean, the

1st team looked a good deal sharper and wiser against Battle Abbey, who despite not playing

much before, had a couple of really promising and knowledgeable players.

Winning the toss, captain Hannah G, chose to field first. Some accurate bowling and tight fielding restricted BA to a total of

229 runs.

Fielding Highlights:

10m throw down by Julia M to directly hit the stumps and dismiss the batter in the 1st over, setting the tone.

Alice C opened the bowling giving away only 1 run.

Harveigh T claimed 3 wickets in her 6 ball over (Bowled, caught and bowled, and a stumping)

Beth S and Amelia B 1 wicket each.

With the bat, all of our girls put into practice our lesson this week on horizontal batting, to score lots of runs off short pitched

balls to reach an impressive winning total of 287 runs.

Batting Highlights:

Grace de W 18 runs (1 x 6 and 3 x 4s)

Beth S 13 runs

Sixes from Hannah G and Julia M

A great performance all round.

Result: Battle Abbey 228 for 6, Claremont 287 for 1

POM: Harveigh

U11A v Dulwich Prep Despite the very wet conditions under foot, the girls enjoyed a great afternoon

at Dulwich. At the end of the first innings the game was tied at 5 rounders each. In the second, shorter innings, Claremont

added 4 rounders to their total (9) and then fielded really tightly, allowing Dulwich to only score 2.5.

Final Score = DPS 7.5 ... Claremont 9

Fielder of the Game (voted by Miss T) = Lauren P (bowler)

Batter of the Game = Jess C (1.5 rounders)

Girl of the Game (voted by DPS) = Tilly L (2nd deep)

Miss Taylor

U10/11 C Rounders v Dulwich Prep

Claremont batted first having lost the toss and set an encouraging total of 6 rounders for Dulwich to chase. Dulwich were up for

the challenge, showing greater confidence and determination with the bat and scored a total of 8, stealing victory by 2

rounders.

This team are starting to bat with more consistency but need to show greater conviction and better decision-making when

fielding in order to limit scoring opportunities for the opposition.

POM: Nancy McI

Miss Hurst

U11B v Dulwich Prep Claremont 3.5 – 7 Dulwich

We played one innings of Rounders over at Dulwich on Wednesday afternoon. When batting, we took risks which resulted in some

of our team getting stumped out. However, when fielding, we attacked and worked together well. We also backed each other up

well. To improve, when batting, we should try to bat the ball farther away from the fielders.

POM Dulwich and Miss Compton vote: Emma Cook

Years 3, 4, 5, & 6 Swimming Gala

Claremont 203 - 145 Sacred Heart

Our youngest swimmers swam against Sacred Heart this week and it was great to see so many swimmers involved. Claremont had

around 40 swimmers and Sacred Heart had around 30. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement from parents, swimmers

and staff alike! Due to the lack of Year 3 swimmers from Sacred Heart our swimmers had the chance to swim against each other

in the front crawl and back stroke races. Our Year 4's, who have been working very hard all year, swam very well and won all of

their races. The Year 4 boys came up against a gutsy Sacred Heart team, but we managed to win both the relays which was well

deserved after coming up against some tough teams in the past. Our Year 5 girls boasting a strong group of swimmers were

dominant throughout and continuing a brilliant season to date! Likewise, our Year 5 boys continue to go from strength to

strength and have the luxury of having two very talented relay teams. Our Year 6 girls have been working hard all year and they

won all their races and are having a really strong finish to the season. The Year 6 boys have improved a lot over the year and

when everyone is available they are a real force as a team. Well done to all our swimmers for another fantastic effort.

Breakdown of results are below;

Colts A v Bedes

It was glorious afternoon over at the Dicker, the toss was lost by Claremont and we were put into bat. Ned and Max opened the batting and had a solid partnership of 25 before Ned was out looking to score quickly. Nathan gave the innings some bite with a quick-fire 33. Max and Nathan both went in quick succession looking to push the score on. Wilf fell cheaply before James B and Elliot came in and pushed the score onto a respectable 102.

In the field Claremont were bright and alert, Nathan (2-6) and Ned (2-8) opened the bowling and removed the top four batsman very cheaply. Cohen (1-8) and Barney (2-6) came on first change and took wickets between them leaving the game to be closed out by Oscar (2-8) and Charlie G (1-0). Bedes were bowled out for 36 giving Claremont a handsome victory. Overall a very good team victory.

We have been helping Mr Bloo with his shopping this week, and in the

process have familiarised ourselves with 1p pieces, by counting them out to

the value indicated on the price ticket of each item. Some children have

managed to buy two items and find the total by adding the numerals

together, which is rather clever. Mr Bloo was most grateful for all the

assistance he received.

The warmer weather has made our peas and beans grow almost magically, so

today we collected pea sticks from the woods and set them up in the

Jubilee garden. We hope to plant our seedlings out later in the

week. We have also built a bean wigwam.

We made rainbow bread on Tuesday, by painting slices of bread

with food dyes diluted in milk. Some children made stripes, some

splodges and some flowers. The bread was then lightly toasted to

make an unusual mid afternoon snack. This was such a popular activity that the children have

already asked to do it again - we will do so soon.

The messiest activity this week has been bashing chalk sticks in ziplock

bags into powder using a wooden mallet, and then making a chalk powder

paint by adding water. We painted old cardboard boxes, and plain paper,

mixing the colours to see which new ones we could create. We found out

that a little chalk paint seems to go a long way and is jolly pesky to get rid

of. We apologise to Jane our amazing cleaner, and many thanks for her

tolerance of such ventures.

The Badgers have been busy this week and we have focused a lot on group work, working

together thus developing our communication skills, teamwork and team spirit! We started off

by separating into groups; the children were given props and together they came up with their

own narratives and stories. Interesting ideas emerged

ranging from lambs eating people and pooping out biscuits,

creating Puffa fish and also cats and dogs having running

races. We carried on the team work focus, working

together to create a picture. We were drawing to music and the children had to take their

pens or crayons on a journey, the outcomes were flawless.

Continuing our 'Team Work' theme, we decided to join with both Year 2 classes, 2F and

2B. Together we collected sticks that had to be longer than our arms, ready to toast

marshmallows. The Badgers were partnered up with a Year 2 and together they toasted

their marshmallow and enjoyed every last little bit! This was very successful and more of

this will be happening throughout the term.

This week has really shown me how amazing the Badgers class are; demonstrating lots of

confidence and fantastic manners towards each-other, and staff around the school.

Page 12: CLAREMONT · Ecossaise; Neeve Wilson on violin played Nigel Hess's Ladies in Lavender, and we even had a double

This week, Hedgehogs have enjoyed planting cress seeds and

the children have been very excited to check them every day,

to see how much more they have grown. Some of the children

started to show interest in our apple tree that is currently

blossoming in the garden. We have also experimented

with different objects this week, and used them as

instruments in the garden.

The Squirrels have been very

creative. We decided to give our

hairy caterpillar a haircut as it was

getting quite long. It was a very

good exercise to hone scissor

technique and cutting skills. We are

watching how long it takes to grow again!

We also made our very own horse to use in our knights and

princesses role play area. We all helped paint and decorate our

horse. We decided to call our horse Jack, after Nancy's

pony. Nancy has been very helpful informing her friends how to

ride and care for Jack. Layton and Riley decided Jack could

breathe ice so he could put out the dragon's fire!

This week, Robins have been outside enjoying the sunshine,

playing on the bikes and trikes. We also made some yummy

cheese swirls to take home and enjoyed rolling out the pastry.

We were very creative and made dinosaur footprints for our

books – we had great fun stomping around.

Page 13: CLAREMONT · Ecossaise; Neeve Wilson on violin played Nigel Hess's Ladies in Lavender, and we even had a double

This week, Kingfishers have been looking at shapes and

numbers. They have made beautiful pictures and used

the scissors to cut out different shapes. We have also

been singing lots of number songs.

This week the Ducklings and Butterflies have

carried on enjoying the warm weather by having a

lovely picnic with their dollies and teddies. Both

rooms then enjoyed listening to a story about a

little girl going for a picnic with her friends

followed by singing time when both rooms joined in

by doing the actions to the songs; their favourite

being "Happy and you Know it".

Polite Notice: When picking up could we would be really grateful if parents / careers could collect from the entrance hall and

not from inside the playground.
