RESEARCH STATEMENT AND AREAS OF INTEREST My work departs from a normative premise: Planning should be emancipatory—lead to outcomes that liberate communities from oppressive socio-spatial conditions. My research seeks to expose the many guises under which planning fails to deliver on its emancipatory promise and points to ways of overcoming this planning paradox. Featured speaker for Great Latino Streets Great Latino Neighborhoods, a program that received the 2008 American Planning Association’s Student Representatives Council Outstanding PSO Award for Best Practices for APSA, the planning student organization at Cal Poly-Pomona.

The book, City Making and Urban Governance in the Americas: Curitiba and Portland, was featured by Ashgate in its 2007 40th-anniversary poster, entitled "Ashgate's Top 40 at 40", which presented Ashgate's top 40 human geography titles (Ashgate publishes more than 700 new academic and professional-practice books each year).
