HAPPYST. PATRICKS
DAY!
Look into the future
with me for a minute,
not too far, just a year
lets say. Its a Friday night and
you would like to see some live
entertainment but not a band, a
play is more what you are lookingfor. You could head down to the
Globe in Balboa Park or the Civic
Theater downtown, but in the
near future you will have a new
choice: the brand new, state-of-
the-art theater on the campus of
the Creative Performing and Media
Arts School (CPMA) right here in
Clairemont.
Under construction now andnearing completion, the 450 seat
theater is the centerpiece of a
$13 million dollar arts complex
that is the realization of principal
Scott Thomasons dream for the
middle school that long-time
Clairemonters still think of as Kroc
Middle School. Ive been here 5
years and have fought tooth and
nail for this project. I ts always
been the plan but it got shelved
during the budget crunch, even
though we had already done a
lot of the preparatory work, Mr.
Thomason said. It was really a bit
of providence that it has become
a reality. Mr. Thomason explained
that the District discovered they
had $100 million from bonds that
had to be spent, so they were
looking for shovel-ready projects,
ones that could be started almost
immediately. CPMAs theater
and arts complex fit the bill and
grading got underway in thesummer of 2012.
Looking at the architects
drawings and touring the inside of
the building (with a hard hat!) one
can see what a professional-level
facility this will be. With rooms for
the school band and orchestra
to learn and practice, specialized
sound proofing and pro-level
lighting and sound systems theas-yet unnamed complex will offer
its students what an arts magnet
school should: a place to perform.
Beyond the student body, the
vision is that the theater will be a
community asset too. I think of this
more as a community theater than a
school theater, Principal Thomason
explained. I foresee local danceand theater groups also using the
venue for their performances and
Nearing Completion, the 450 seat theater is the centerpiece of a $13million dollar arts complex at the Creative and Performing Arts Schoolin Clairemont.

to conduct workshops with our students. The bringing together of all the
people in the area with an interest in the arts can only benefit our students
and Clairemont too.
There is a fly in the ointment however: there is no budget for operating
the complex adequately. As most parents know, money for schoolprograms outside of the basics is very hard to come by. Mr. Thomason has
a long list of things needed: staff (like a
theater manager), instruments for the
band, lighting, maintenance, and more.
Fortunately, he is not alone in working
on this.
A foundation has been formed,
headed up by community leader
Lori Sorbo, with the goal of finding
funding sources within the community.
Naming rights are being made
available and a non-profit status for
the foundation is being pursued, so
donations will be tax-deductible. Even that is an expense supporters
need to raise money for; Lori and Mr. Thomason have already invested
$800 toward the non-profit status. As Lori said with a smile, We have
a dedicated few in the community working on this, now we need a
dedicated few with money!
Admittedly, the kind of money the CPMA Foundation is looking for
wont be raised with bake sales. Having this wonderful addition to the
community named for you or your family would require a substantialcontribution. Still, Allen Boaz, another member of the foundation believes
there are folks in Clairemont that could and would donate to have other
things named for them. I know in San Diegos largest community (80,000+
population) there are people who are passionate about the arts and who
can see the benefit to all of us in having a performing arts center here,
Allen said. So maybe its not a contribution of tens of thousands of dollars
to have the smaller black box theater named for someones family, but a
more modest check to have a plaque on a row of seats. It all counts.
Principal Thomason expects construction will be far enough along to
schedule a ribbon-cutting ceremony in mid-May. The Foundation is alsostarting to plan for a gala fundraising event in October. Members of the
foundation are brainstorming ideas for that event and compiling lists of
potential donors to reach out to. As San Diegans know, there are a number
of individuals in our city that are generous philanthropists, and Lori and
the others plan to contact those folks in the hope that one or more will see
CPMAs vision of a vibrant community theater for Clairemont.
In the meantime, riggers are hanging speakers in the theater,
electricians are hooking up lighting fixtures and Principal Thomason
attends to the day to day business of running a middle school, while
dreaming of a shipment of new trumpets for the band.
Stand by Clairemont; this dream, and all the rest, will come true. Save aFriday night sometime next year for taking in a play in a gorgeous theater
right here in your own neighborhood.
If you would like to
donate your time or
money, or if you know
someone who would be
able to help the CPMA
Foundation, contact
Lori Sorbo at [email protected].
Happy St. Patricks Day! By John Poutr
Everyone in Clairemont can feel a little more lucky on
Saturday March 14. Thats because we all get a chance
to celebrate St. Patricks Day (a couple of days early!).
Started in 1903 Ireland, the celebration has spread toall corners of the globe. Here in San Diego, the forefront
of that celebration is a parade and festival in Balboa Park. Of
local interest, the festival was conceived in 1981 by Clairemont
resident and owner of the Blarney Stone Pub, James Foley. The
parade starts in Hillcrest and runs south along the length of
6th Ave. The theme this year is Celebrating People in Public
Service and it will feature traditional music, food, and general
revelry. For more details, you can check the official website at
www.stpatsparade.org. So remember to wear your green and
dig out your Kiss me Im Irish pins. Enjoy the day and as theIrish say ,Slinte!

Out &
AboutErik BattenbergMore than Just Brews at ModernTimes Beer in Point Loma
WWith San Diego seemingly on pace to have more breweries than
taco shops these days, it can be a challenge for a new brewer to
make a splash. Modern Times Beer, which opened last August in
Point Loma, clearly is up for that challenge.
Walk into its spacious, warehouse-like tasting room and your eyes may
not know where to focus first.
One two-story wall is covered with colorful comic book pages all the way
to the ceiling. Another wall is home to an enormous Post-it-note mosaic of
the late Michael Jackson with his pet chimp Bubbles (who is alive and living
in Florida, if Wikipedia is to be believed).
Another wall has several thrift-store paintings on it, with some sections
plastered with pages from old books.
The reading theme continues at the large, rectangular tasting bar, which
has a marble top that appears to be propped up by piles and piles of old
books. On both sides of the bar there are rows of Ikea shelving units witheven more old books a collection of short stories, a book about the Boston
Strangler and The Emergence of Modern Turkey among them. Patrons are
invited to read the books for free while theyre there.
Also on the shelves are vintage typewriters, radios, cameras and suitcas-
es, and various knickknacks.
Its like a Craigslist acid trip, one friend said when we stopped in last
August. And that was before light fixtures made with tumbleweeds were
installed.
If you dont feel like reading a book, and Ive never seen anyone actually
do it there, Modern Times often offers other activities. In December, watercolors were provided so you could make your own
painting, and some of the customers creations still hang in the hallway
toward the restrooms. In February, a station was set up to make your own
valentines.
Having a somewhat trippy tasting room and offering DIY arts-and-crafts
projects will only take a brewery so far, of course. A brewery has to make
good beer to thrive in San Diego, and no amount of offbeat art installations
will make bad beer taste good. The refreshing news is that Modern Times makes very good beer. Their
four year-round offerings are Blazing World, an amber with lots of hops; Black
House, a coffee stout; Lomaland, a Saison; and my favorite, Fortunate Islands,
a hopped-up wheat beer that drinks like an IPA.You can get a tasting flight
with 4-ounce pours of those four beers for $8, or you can buy them by the
pint. They also are available to-go in growlers and four-packs of 16-ounce
cans.
Modern Times also brews seasonal offerings, specialty releases and
one-off beers. On Black Friday, for example, they offered eight varieties of
the Black House stout, including versions with coconut and cocoa nibs; sour
cherries and vanilla beans; nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla;
and a Thanksgiving version with cranberries, thyme and rosemary. Not all of
them were winners, but they were interesting to try.
The brewery also has a sour beer program, with batches of beer that
have been aging in barrels for several months. None have been released yet,
but word is theyll likely be selling the first bottles sometime in the next few
months.
Modern Times has been distributing its beer around San Diego since last
summer and recently expanded into Los Angeles. It also announced plans to
open a second tasting room, in North Park, this spring or summer.
North Park is already crowded with craft beer options, but given whatModern Times has done so far, it seems a safe bet that theyll make a splash
there as well.
Part of enjoying craft beer is making sure everyone arrives home safely. If you are drinking, designate a
sober driver, call a cab or use a service such as Uber or Lyft. New Uber users can get a $20 discount on a ride
by using promo code mqgae.

March-ing Into Our 60th Year
DISTRICT 6UPDATE
From the office of Lorie Zapf
Hello Clairemont! Last month, one of our Councilmembers
was elected Mayor to finish out Bob Filners term. Many
of you have asked who will replace Mr. Faulconer as the
District 2 Clairemont representative. While we dont know
yet who that person will be, we do know that they will be
appointed by the City Council during a public meeting.
This must happen within 30 days after Mayor-elect
Faulconer is sworn into office and after the District 2 officeis vacated. I dont want anyone to think that they dont
have representation at City Hall, so in the meantime, I am
making my staff available to handle any issues that come up
in Clairemont until the appointed Councilmember has their
office up and running. If you have any city-related issue,
including potholes, Code Compliance questions, or service
requests, please contact my office at (619) 236-6616 or
The City of San Diegois currently receiving
submissions for the 2014
San Diegans Waste No
Water Student Film Contest.
This is open to high school
and college students
from San Diego, Imperial
Beach, and Coronado. It
challenges entrants to
create a 30-second film that encourages wise water use, conservation, and water-reuse. If you are a student who is
creative, interested in sustainability, and would like to have
your short film seen by thousands of people, this is your
chance.
And for younger kids 1st through
6th grade students the annual Poster
Contest is underway, and were looking
for our next budding artist. The poster
contest is held each spring, and provides
a focal point for teachers to talk withtheir students about the importance of
using water wisely as the warm months
approach. Last year, the contest attracted
more than 3,000 elementary students
whose art was designed to spread the
vital message that San Diegans Waste No
Water.
All the information for both contests is available online,
just log on to www.wastenowater.org to find out how you
can help spread the message Waste No Water to all of SanDiego!
OOn behalf of the Clairemont Town Council,
we would like congratulate some of our
elected officials on a few significant
milestones that were achieved recently.
First, we want to congratulate District 2 CityCouncilman Kevin Faulconer on his election last
month to be our citys 37th Mayor. The significance
of this milestone is that Mayor-Elect Faulconer has
become the first person who has represented
Clairemont to be elected Mayor of San Diego.
Second, we want to congratulate
Assemblywoman Toni Atkins who has been
elected Speaker of the California State Assembly.
Speaker-Elect Atkins represents parts of South
Clairemont and Bay Park in the 78th Assembly District, and becomes the first
legislator in our states history from San Diego to wield the powerful Speakersgavel.
Finally, we want to offer a special congratulations to our Interim Mayor
(iMayor) Todd Gloria. Through some crazy times at City Hall, Todd Gloria
came in and helped our city heal and moved us forward with the dignity and
professionalism that we needed at this time. Todd graduated from our own
James Madison High School and became the first Clairemont graduate to
become Mayor of San Diego. Thank you, Todd!
The 2014 Garden Tour is fast-approaching! We have been floored by the
number of folks who have submitted gardens this year, so we are going to have
plenty of great choices. We are still soliciting sponsors to help offset the cost of
this years tour, and -- of course -- volunteers will be needed for day-of activities.
Much of what we raise through this annual event helps the Town Council
fund community grants that we award twice a year. If you would like to
showcase your garden, help sponsor the tour, and/or volunteer, please e-mail
Ingrid Terpening, our Garden Tour Chair, at [email protected]
Speaking of community grants, if you know of an organization, or a
community project, that could benefit from some extra help from the Town
Council, please dont hesitate to apply for our community grants. You can find
an application on our website at ClairemontOnline.com/Grants. Application
guidelines and more information about our grants are also listed on that page.
Also, we love to encourage participation in our Town Council committees.Given that we are a volunteer-operated organization, the more people we have
involved the more we can accomplish for our Clairemont community. Strength
in numbers, right? Some of our committees needing some additional help
include: Communications, Events, Garden Tour, and Public Safety Awareness.
Any Clairemont resident may be eligible to serve on any of our committees,
so if youre interested in participating, sign-up at ClairemontOnline.com/
Committees.
Our next Clairemont Town Council meeting will be held on Thursday, March
6th at 7:00pm inside the Cadman Elementary cafeteria (4370 Kamloop Avenue,
San Diego, CA 92117). County Treasurer Tax-Collector Dan McAllister will be
our guest speaker, and our Public Safety Awareness Committee continues theirinformational presentations, this month focusing on drunk driving.
Working for you, Clairemont!

Vision 20/20 Forum: What Kinds of Schools
Do We Want?> Put on jointly by the Superintendent and the Board of Education,
this forum will focus on three questions about our public schools: What
things are we doing that are working and need to continue? What can we
improve to reach the goals of Vision 2020? How can we all work together to
accomplish these goals? The answers to these questions will help chart the
course of Californias second-largest school district.
We are committed to having clear, long-term priorities based on our
Vision 2020, said Kevin Beiser, Board of Education President. We believe
that when our priorities are inspired and informed by our parents, students,
employees and community members, we will have important information forlong-range planning with students at the center.
The Vision 2020 Forums: What Kinds of Schools Do We Want series offer
parents, staff, students, and community members an opportunity to give
input to the superintendent and the board members on priorities for our
students and schools.
These forums will yield a clear and collective sense of our district-wide
long-term priorities, said Superintendent Cindy Marten. We look forward
to continued stakeholder engagement beyond these forums as we work
together to create quality schools in every neighborhood.
The forum will be held at the Mira Mesa High School Media Center,
10510 Reagan Road, San Diego 92126 on Monday, March 3 from 7:00-9:00
p.m. Carpool with a friend, it benefits our neighborhood when many people

Fast Times 5k and ClairemontDay at the Bay on April 12th
The Clairemont Hills Kiwanis is preparing to hold the 2nd annual Fast Times

The 5k race / walk funds will greatly help the schools. We encourage parents, students, and friends to take part. The rac es will begin at 7:00am. To register

and put emphasis on healthy life styles for our youth.
After the races, the Clairemont Day at the Bay family activities will begin. The first year
was a real success with many community members coming to find out what is going on in
our community schools. The family fun event is an interactive look at all that is happening
at our schools in the Clairemont community and is open to all San Diego families. It is an
activity based event that will bring nineteen public schools from the community together.
The Clairemont Mesa Education Foundation is working with several loc al organizations andthe schools to set up family focused activities and showcase the schools for the community.
Local sponsors such as AXA Financial, K-Co Construction and Seiko Properties have come
forward to help support the day s events with Mission Federal stepping forward to give
tremendous support.
The funds raised from the race will benefit the Clairemont Mes a Education Foundation
which supports the students in public schools in the community of Clairemont. This

within the community of Clairemont to assist the schools with financial support and in
kind contributions for programs and projects as requested by school administrations and
classroom teachers.
The Fast Times 5K race and Clairemont Day at the Bay activities will benefit the
foundation by building community awareness of the foundation, further build relationships
with local businesses and organizations and give the public schools within the community
an opportunity to interact with publi c and share all that they have to offer.

Nominations are now being
accepted for the 2014
San Diego Mesa College
Distinguished Alumni Award.
The award program was created in 2011
to recognize former students who have
made significant contributions to society,
and whose accomplishments, affiliations,
and careers have honored the legacy of
academic excellence at San Diego Mesa
College.
This will be a special award, for a
very special 50th anniversary year. We are
proud of the tens of thousands of students
who have attended Mesa College, and of
the contributions they have made to the
city and people of San Diego and beyond,
said Dr. Pamela T. Luster, President of Mesa
College. I encourage the community to
respond, and help us to select our 2014Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
Notable Mesa College graduates
