A wide shoulder (extenuated by shoulder pads) that goes into a narrow waste (extenuated by a belt) that flared out to a wider hip - common in the woman’s work wardrobe because it commands respect and authority. After John Molloy wrote his novel, Women Dress For Success in 1975, which had great popularity and influence. Corporate women abandoned the two piece outfit for a jacketed, more masculine, suit – this suit was later called a power suit.
The Power Suit◦ Women in the work field strived to be
authoritative. By wearing a simple wool suit in a neutral navy or grey. Under the jacket women wore “non-sexual” blouses and work skirts were at least to the knee.
◦ They maintained a non colorful work wardrobe without bright colors or design to be taken more seriously.
Women wear in the corporate world with important jobs. Women started to see themselves as powerful, successful people and wanted that to be reflected in their work environment. This was the beginning of the power suit.
Women were mothers, wives, workers which is why casual fashion was denim and comfortable.
It was a bad year for national disasters which may have lead to the rise in man made fabrics being used in apparel
70s- had high wasted pants, small shoulder pads, big lapels on sports jackets for
both men and women, and high healed boots
90s- denim jackets and high wasted jeans were all the rage
