MARCH 22, 2020 20800 Grand River Avenue Detroit, Michigan 48219 PARISH MISSION We are Christ the King Parish, a richly diverse Christian Community in Northwest Detroit. We are on a journey of Discipleship with Jesus, seeking conversion, reconciliation and renewal. We reach out in welcome to all the people within our neighborhood, proclaiming the good News of Christ the King, building community, celebrating together, serving one another’s needs and the needs of all our neighbors. Lent in Three Words As we celebrate Lent, we think about praying, fasting, and almsgiving. This is one of my main memories when I was a Catholic school stu- dent. Our entire school celebrated the Stations of the Cross EVERY Fri- day. I still have one of the booklets that we would follow, and it hasn’t changed in over thirty years! I re- member the smell of the incense that Fr. Ritter would use during the bene- diction. I loved coming home on Fri- days, both as a student, and then when I was teaching at St. Mary’s, because I would smell like incense. It is one of those scents that brought and continues to bring me comfort and strength. We would also be fast- ing…peanut butter and jelly every Friday in my lunchbox and the school fish fry for dinner—EVERY Friday. We also had our Rice Bowls to put our ‘alms’ in. I’m pretty sure that most of my dad’s pocket change that I would find ended up in that card- board bowl along with part of my al- lowance. While these three words stand out for many of us during the Lenten season, we can each interpret Lent in our own ways. One of my mentors, Sister Theresa Darga, is a Sister of St. Francis in Sylvania, Ohio. The Syl- vania Franciscans are participating in a #Lent2020 activity in which they describe Lent in three words. Her choices were renewal, forgiveness, and transformation. I have been giv- ing this a lot of thought and my three words for #Lent2020 are reflection, restoration, and purpose. During this Lenten season, I am focused on reflecting over the past year. There have been so many changes that have taken place and will continue to happen as we grow closer to the end of the school year. By reflect- ing on the events that have already taken place, I can practice personal restoration. We all put so much energy into what we dedicate our- selves to that we sometimes need to restore ourselves. I need to look back and remember all of the good things that have happened over this time, glorifying God in the face of adversity. Finally, I have to re- member my purpose. This can be challenging, particularly when you feel that you have a specific pur- pose and direction – until God guides you to turn onto a different path. Our lives are ultimately His plan and sometimes we can be a little slow to catch up. I pray that this Lenten season will give you a renewed faith and purpose as we move through the days of waiting for the Risen Lord. It is hard to imagine that we are almost through with the third quar- ter of our school year. It seems like yesterday that our students walked into Christ the King Catholic School. We have spent this year and over eighty years before this time, preparing our students to be respectful, responsible, ready, and reflective. We teach our students these traits through both our words and our examples. At Christ the King, we are blessed to have the Christ the King Service Corps sup- porting our students and commu- nity. We recently had a visit from Ms. Shannon Grady who came back on her break to see her students. This year we are blessed to have Ms. Jennifer Gold and Ms. Emma Griffiths at Christ the King, sup- porting our students in the class- room and youth ministry as well as at St. Christine’s. They are great examples for children of all ages to look up to! This year was a great year for our boys’ bas- ketball team. They worked hard and their dedication showed! Thank you to everyone who came out to support our boys. We are also proud to recognize eighth grader Robert Morris. Robert re- ceived the CYO Scholar Athlete Award for Christ the King School. He is dedicated to his grades as well as his sport and demonstrates leadership both on and off of the court. He also received the Cosey Challenge Scholarship for this school year. We look forward to seeing all of the places that Robert and all his classmates will go! Peace, Amanda Lund, Principal

Lent in Three Words

As we celebrate Lent, we think about praying, fasting, and almsgiving. This is one of my main memories when I was a Catholic school stu-dent. Our entire school celebrated the Stations of the Cross EVERY Fri-day. I still have one of the booklets that we would follow, and it hasn’t changed in over thirty years! Choir Passion Practice

A prayer that does not lead you to practical action for your brother —the poor, the sick, those in need of help, a brother in difficulty —is a sterile

and incomplete prayer. But, in the same way . . . When time is not set aside for dialogue with him in prayer, we risk serving ourselves and not God present in our needy brother and sister. St Benedict sums up the kind of life that indi-cated for his monks in two words: ora et labora, pray and work. It is from contemplation, from a strong friendship with the Lord that the capacity is born in us to live and to bring the love of God, his mercy, his tenderness, to others. And also our work with brothers in need, our charitable works of mercy, lead us to the Lord, because it is in the needy brother and sister that we see the Lord himself.

EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Classroom Happenings Grade 3

The students in Grade Three would like to wish everyone a blessed Lenten season and a joyous Easter. We are doing our Lenten medita-tions each day, walking with Jesus to Calvary.

February, Black History Month, set the stage for our Lenten resolu-tions, as we talked about Martin Luther King Jr. and his dreams to change the world. We expanded our vocabulary using new terms like equality, discrimination, segre-gation and justice. We discussed ways we could help to make the world a better place.

Here are just a few of our ideas: If I Could Change the World…

I would try real hard to be nice, kind and help the world to be non-violent. I could pick up trash if there is trash in the park. I could give to those in need. To be success-ful in the future I need to go to college.

To change the world I would clean the ocean. I would also make a business and we would pick up trash. Anyone could join us. I would build more Catholic high schools since there aren’t that many in America. I can pray that more people are against gun violence.

I will change the world by giving food to the homeless. I will help people make friends. I will greet people if they are new to the school. I will invite them to sit with me and my friends. At my church on Christmas, I gave the people the presents that they needed for their kids.

Everyone would have equal rights. People would always be treated with kindness. I would teach people how to love and not be so angry, and love God.

May our dreams come true!
