Certification of ARTS - Safety assesment

Any new system should demonstrate that it is at leastas safe as the system it replaces

How do we evaluate the safety?

General principle for acceptation

6/8/2016 5

A hazard is any source of potential damage, harm or adverse health effects on something or someone under certain conditions at work.

Basically, a hazard can cause harm or adverse effects (to individuals as health effects or to organizations as propertyor equipment losses).

Risk is the chance or probability that a person will beharmed or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard. It may also apply to situations with property or equipment loss.

Hazards and Risks

Risk assessment is the process where you:

• identify hazards,

• analyze or evaluate the risk associated with thathazard, and

• determine appropriate ways to eliminate or minimizethe hazard.

Risk Assesment

10La Rochelle 30/09/2014

• Failure of the vehicle/infrastructure

• Unclement weather

• Improper behavior of other vehicles

• Improper behavior of other road users

• Presence of obstacles on the path

Main hazards for La Rochelle

6/8/2016 12

• Harming passengers

• Harming other road users

• Damage to the vehicle

• Damage to other property

Risks

6/8/2016 13

• Vehicle leaving the standard trajectory

• Vehicle not controling its speed/acceleration/jerk

• Vehicle not stopping properly in case of obstacle

• Vehicle catching fire

• Vehicle emitting dangerous gases

• Vehicle with exposed high voltage

• …..

Hazards linked to the malfunction of the vehicle

Risks reduction

• Apply ISO 13482 and/or Machinery Directive

• Stop if vehicle leaves the track

• Avoid fixed obstacle close to trajectory

• Limit access to vehicle trajectory

• Limit speed of vehicles and other users

Minimal mobile object detection distances (MMODD)

VRU

VRU

• Minimal distance to a suddenly appearing VRU

• Avoid path close to hidden passageways

• Speed should be adjusted according to MMODD and maximum speed of VRU

• Put obstacles to reduce the speed of VRUs

• MMODD depends on the very precise path of the cybercars

• MMODD depends on the sensor suite

Minimal mobile object detection distances (MMODD)

Maximum safe speed

• The vehicle must stop if it deviates from its trajectoryby a set distance (see specifications)

• For safety evaluation, it is important to see if there isany probability to hit a dangerous obstacle

• This depends on the MSD and the speed of the vehicle

• We selected the maximum speed of the vehicleaccording to the MSD on each section
