Nomzamo Senior Club in Langa is call-ing on all aged citizens in the area tojoin the organisation in order to bene-

fit from the daily services on offer.Raymond Bokako, a coordinator at the

club, has appealed to the local gogos andmadalas to avail themselves.Based at Ekhaya Labantu Centre, John-

son Ngwevela Street in Zone 16, the centrecurrentlyhas about 37 seniorswhoaremem-bers, a number far less than the entire agedpopulation in the vicinity.Some of the services on offer include

health screening, High blood pressure, dia-

betics, weight control, manicure and pedi-cure, eye testing, nutrition and transport toand from home.The seniors also participate in choral

competitions against other senior clubs andthey have also been taken out on tour to pla-ces like Robben Island.They also do sewing, beading and craft

work.Nomzamo is one of 19 clubs around the

city, which operate under the auspices of Ik-amva Labantu Senior Clubs.Bokako said the centre keeps the elders

entertained instead of sitting idle at home,eventually suffering from sedentary diseas-es. Some also escape the torment of abuse at

home. The worst is for them to be left alonewhile everybody else is away at work.“We ensure that they take their chronic

medication treatment and also teach themabout healthy eating habits. We are encour-aging active ageing. We also help those whoneedwheelchairs.We are appealing to otherelders to come and join us, because there aremany benefits that they will get here,” Bok-ako said.According to him, they have had the for-

tune of using the skills of three care giverswho help with cooking, cleaning and otherneeds until the end of the month, courtesyof the City of Cape Town.Phumla Ndaba, Senior Coordinator at Ik-

amva Labantu, said the programmes in thecentre are aimed at benefiting the elders.“They are safer here than to staying alone

sobriquet ‘sonkqayi’ or ‘ta chiskop’would seem to be a great misnomer, andwhomsoever dared to address me assuch would have to answer to thegoddess Sif, wife of Thor. A commissionof inquiry would suffice.The reason I decide to finally out with

my feelings on this issue is because weare well into Youth Month and thosemost affected by it are young people(specifically women).I am talking about the Brazilian

weave. Much has been said about it, forand against.Bra Hugh Masekela has even made it

clear that he was against weaves or hairextensions by the womenfolk. Thelegendary trumpeter has taken it a stepfurther by refusing to be photographedwith women adorned with these. Hiscomments caused a great deal of stir.But I could see where he was comingfrom. I do not side with Bra Hughbecause I enjoy jazz. No?My opinion is that our ladies do not

seem to appreciate the beauty theypossess in their own hair. For them tobe seen to be beautiful, classy andpossessing swag, the weave has to comeinto the picture.When they lack the means to attain

these hair extensions, it’s as if theworld is crumbling.They refuse to go out. You will hear

them say, “Yhu tshoma andizukwaziukuya eRands kule weekend, kalokundifratsi.” Or, if push comes to shove, apublic appearance for them is on theself-imposed condition that they wear adoek (iqhiya).Gone are the days of the perm (and

the accompanying perm lotion) and ofrelaxing one’s hair and leaving it as is. Iknow my girlfriend may attribute mystance to my well-known thriftiness,while other women might dismiss theseas the words of a boyfriend tired offorking out for the expensive weave.“Whuuu shem!” I can hear them pullingout their hair and screaming in disgust.Far from it, my dear sisters.In actual fact, this is a cry for the

African girl child to start recognising herown beauty.On many occasions, I have come across

the beautiful sight of a Black woman innatural hair walking down the street, andit is at such moments that I ask myself alot of questions.Why all the craze about the Brazilian

hair then? Is this a self-esteem problem?Or a mindset that needs some decolonis-ing? Granted, your hair does not definewho you are and one understands thatwe are living in an advanced world ofchoices.Anyway, beauty is in the eye of the

beholder (or, in the case of this colum-nist, “beer holder”). But mine is to makeyou aware that there is actually nothingwrong with your own hair. Awukho fratsitu mntaka bhuti.So, after all, you can un-weave yourself,

go to Rands, have a good time and just begreat.

Micheal Mpengesi, from Gugulethu,went on from being a shebeen king,a petrol attendant and ultimately to

being a fashion designer; proof of the adagethat it is never too late to follow one’sdreams.At the ripe age of 45, Mpengesi is only now

starting to make a name for himself as a de-signer.Mpengesi runs his ownman’s blazer label

calledMicheal Vintage and dresses the CEO

of Cape Town Fashion Council Bryan Ram-kiliwan. He also designs women’s dressesfor special occasions like graduations andmatric balls.Mpengesi is adamant that despite his suc-

ces, it was not always smooth sailing.“In the late 70’s wemovedwithmymother

from Gugulethu to a small town called But-terworth in the Eastern Cape. I was raisedby her alone with my late elder sister. Mymother was a seamstress who made clotheswhich she sold at the markets. I used towatch her work on her machine and I also

fell in love with making clothes. Iasked her to teach me and that iswhen my journey began,” he toldCity Vision.He said he started by stitching

together various clothing itemssuch as combining two t-shirts in-to one and this turned him into afirm favourite in high school.“There was a time dungaree

jeans were a fashionable item butthere weren’t many available inour area. I started alternatingjeans and people were crazy overthem. That is how I managed tomake pocket money for myself,”he reminisced.Things were going well for him

and hewas set to finish hismatricand chase his dream. He said hisdreams were shattered when hismother succumbed to illness andpassed away while he was doingmatric.“That just blew the wind out of

my sails. It really hurt me as mymother was all that I had as myolder sister had died a couple ofyears before. I didn’t have a goodrelationship with my father, ev-erything just went south afterthat. I even failed my matric,” heexplained.After completing his matric in

1992, he moved to Cape Townwhere he had to find a job to sup-port himself. After failing to finda job, he started an illegal tavern, whichproved a tough sell, so he started lookingfor work.“I worked in various jobs until I became

a petrol attendant in Parow in 1996 andstayed there for six years. All that time Ialways had love for the textile industry butI needed to survive so I stuck to the job,”said Mpengesi.He said his turning point came when he

received a job as a generalworker at a textilefactory in 2003.He got back to designing and producing

garments over the weekend, which he soldat the markets.“In 2006 I did that on a full time basis and

The elderly at the Sizamile Old AgeHome in Langa were treated to a dayof sweets last Friday. It was smiles all

around.They received the treats curtesy of mem-

bers of the DA who said it was done to re-mind the inamtes that theirs was not a for-gotten lot.They spent the day treating the elderly at

the centre in Johnson Ngwevela Hall.According to the Councillor JP Smith, the

visit was part of their ongoing relationshipwith the home.“It’s a continuation of our relationship

with this centre as you know we have in thepast workedwith them to improve the place.Today is just treating the residents with

some cakes and soft drinks just to brightenup their day,” said Smith.He added that the cakeshavebeendonated

and that they bought the drinks and thesweets out of their own pockets.The party also used the day to introduce

its ward councillor candidate, Micheal Du-mawho personally handed over the cakes tothe elderly.The former Sancomember said that it was

important to show the neglected residentsthat they were not forgotten.“We must show that even though they

may not have families or their families areneglecting them, we do care.Institutions like these are important in

our communities and we must make surethe residents are looked after,” said Duma.Resident Nokhaya Javu said that she was

happy for the treat and said she enjoyed hav-ing visitors come over at the centre.“It nice to have people visiting over and

Nyanga police need assistance for the botched robbery.

Nyanga Police are asking for the assist-ance of the public in the investigationof a case of attempted murder and an

inquest docket which was opened after asuspect was shot and killed during a shoot-out with aman they want to rob in Ntlanga-no Crescent in Nyanga, on Wednesday.Threeunidentifiedmen, ofwhomone sus-

pect was positively armed, entered thehouse of the complainant just after he cameback from withdrawing cash from a bankin Gugulethu. One of the suspects firedshots at the complainant and missed, thecomplainant retaliated and injured one sus-pect in the armand the secondonewas fatal-

ly wounded inside a white Toyota vehiclethey were using. The injured suspect andthe third one fled the scene.

.In another incident a 62 year old manwas shot and killed at a shopping centre inMonwood Drive in Browns Farm. It is al-leged people heard gun shots and saw thevictim lying next to his vehicle with a gun-shot wound to his head. The motive on thelatter is unknown.Nyanga Police requests anyone with in-

Man kills suspected robber

Wouldbe rapist arrestedA 50-year-old manwas expected to appear intheWynbergMagistrate’s Court onWednes-day following the attempted rape of a 12-year-old girl in Samora Machel, police said.He was arrested on Tuesday following the

attack on Sunday, Captain Ntomboxolo Sit-shitshi said.She was asleep in a bedroom of her home.“When she woke up, the suspect was on

top of her. She ran and informed her sister,”Sitshitshi said.A case of attempted rape was opened. Lo-

cals assaulted him before he was arrested.A 21-year-old man would appear in the

same court onWednesdaymorning on char-

ges of rape and assault, following an attackin Crossroads.“The victim and her cousin were leaving

a party at midnight on Monday when thesuspect approached them and forcefullydragged the victim to his home,” Sitshitshisaid.“When they arrived, the woman called

for help and managed to flee, but the sus-pect caught up with her, assaulted her andtook her to his house where he raped her.”Before the rape, the man allegedly as-

saulted two people who had tried to helpher.He was arrested on Tuesday night.

Nyanga police need assistance for the botched robbery.

Nyanga Police are asking for the assist-ance of the public in the investigationof a case of attempted murder and an

inquest docket which was opened after asuspect was shot and killed during a shoot-out with aman they want to rob in Ntlanga-no Crescent in Nyanga, on Wednesday.Threeunidentifiedmen, ofwhomone sus-

pect was positively armed, entered thehouse of the complainant just after he cameback from withdrawing cash from a bankin Gugulethu. One of the suspects firedshots at the complainant and missed, thecomplainant retaliated and injured one sus-pect in the armand the secondonewas fatal-

ly wounded inside a white Toyota vehiclethey were using. The injured suspect andthe third one fled the scene.

.In another incident a 62 year old manwas shot and killed at a shopping centre inMonwood Drive in Browns Farm. High School last Wednesday.This month celebrates the 40th anniversa-

ry of what became internationally known asSoweto Day, June 16, when students fromthis sprawling township took to the streets

to protest against the imposition of Afrik-kaans in black schools.Langa High School was very much in-

volved in the 1976 Uprising hence it was im-portant for the organization to kick the cele-brations there.In this month of June, Lulwazi Lwethu

aims to empower and motivate youth in

preparation for the crucial June exams. Onthis day topics covered at the event rangedfrom career awareness programs; Bursaryopportunities; Substance abuse and Teen-age pregnancies.During the programme, success stories

were shared by two beneficiaries who hadreceived a bursary from Luvuyo Rani ofSilulo Ulutho Technologies.The two, Lwethu Mapukatha and Bonis-

wa Nongogo had won the bursaries duringthe launch of Lulwazi Lwethu at the Gu-gulethu Sports Complex last year.Lulwazi Lwethu believes and lives by the

notion that “education is the most power-fulweaponwhichyoucanuse to change the

world”.The organization was only launched a

year ago and is still going strong with onlyone goal in mind, empowerment.Langa High school learners said they had

a great time from the visit and gained a lotof knowledge that will assist them withgreat decision making in the future.Celebrations will see Lulwazi Lwethu em-

barking on more visits to Gugulethu Com-prehensive; ID Mkhize and Eisleeben HighSchool in the month of June.Also present at the event were Deputy

Minister of Human Settlements, Zoe Kota;Litha Jolobe and the Youth Director Them-ba Nobathana.

Community activist Lulu Nongogo will host Youth events at local high schools this month.

The Tibb Treatment Centre, a privateclinic known for charging cheaper pri-ces is under threat of closing down afterbeing robbed at gun-point on Tuesday.Situated in St Francis Centre in Lan-

ga, the clinic was robbed of about R28000 in cash.Nosipho Nogayi, a supervisor said

four males, who are between the ages of19 and 21, carried out the robbery.Nogayi said the thieves had accosted

a colleague from their Surrey Estatebranch, whowas putting theweeks’ tak-ings into the boot of the car shewas driv-ing.“They pointed the gun at her shoulder

and demanded she hand the cash overto them, before snatching themoneybagand running off. They did not fire anyshot.”Nogayi did not want to divulge the

identity of the victim, save to say she isa female colleague.The other two accomplices, who were

standing just metres away during therobbery, also followed the culprits totheir two getaway cars, which wereparked outside the gates and sped-off.

The victim’s car keys were also in thebag.Nogayi said they were now living in

fear and that Professor Bhika, who ownsthe centres, has vowed to close down thecentre should it get robbed again.“We are all scared now. I cannot even

sleep at night. We did not expect such athing. They(suspects) were clean boysand they did not look suspicious. We donot trust boys who come here anymore,because we do not know if they are genu-ine patients or skollies.”Professor Bhika has appealed to the

community to come up with informationregarding the robbery.The community will suffer should it

close down, because it is very cheap com-pared to other centres,” Nogayi said.The centre, which has been operating

since 2006, has suffered its robbery.Vulindlela Tsotsi, a security guard at

the centre, said the suspects distractedhis attention by asking directions to thetoilet.“One of them asked me to go and show

Sinakho Leadership Support and SkillsDevelopment Centre in Langa held agraduation ceremony for students who

have completed a two month sewing course,.at Guga’sthebe Community Art Centre lastweek.Nontuthuzelo Pahlana and Dr Mthobeli

Guma, a former lecturer at the Universityof the Western founded the centre in 2011.It offers various skills programs and sew-

ing is one of these.The participants were mostly drawn from

unemployed women and men and young-sters.At the event the students were all proudly

flashing out their beautiful and stylish out-fits.Each student was awarded with a certifi-

cate and a brand new sewing machine.The students had never even touched a

sewing machine prior to the course.Lena Kleinbooi was one of those.“I have learnt a lot in communication and

how to believe inmyself. I have sewn camou-flage and jeans because our boys like qualityand sport stuff. Now I know how to sew andit will keep me busy. (the skills) will help uswomen and the community and alleviate un-employment and poverty.Bongiwe Mkhoba said: “I have come to

learn that sewing should be measured incentimetres. I didn’t think that I’ll be ableto sew one day,”.Noncedo Papu said she had loved handi-

work from a young age.“I have a passion for sewing. Growing up,

I used to collect rags and fabric off cuts andmade a skirt out of them. I wanted to sew fora long time but I didn’t know. Now I knoweverything about it and at home I’ll sew forthem. It would help other women too. Herewe had an opportunity to share ideas and

we’ll take this forward to make a biggerproject,” she said.She also mentioned that her sisters were

very much supportive and she took a photoof their graduation and sent them, for themto see what was she talking about?Tamara Nketle from Gugulethu said it

was a big and important day in her life.“This is to develop women, kids and gran-

nies. I’m a single parent and I want my kidsto further their studies and with sewing Ican be able to do that.LindelwaMasete fromLanga said shewas

proud of her achievement.“I saw a pamphlet in one of the old flats

and I had an interest in taking part. In 2004I was part of a sewing project but we nevermade an outfit.”

Among graduates were two youngsters,one was Thembelihle Mvuvu,12, and a girlnamed Lelethu both from Langa.Thembelihle said: “I heard about this

course from my aunt who makes bags andI was interested because I love sewing. I at-tended the course for two days a week. Mytransport would drop me here from school.I’m happy I have done this course and alsoabout the machine,” he says.His mother, Fundiswa Mvumvu said her

dadwas amotormechanic andheused smallrags for cleaning and wiping and her sonwould collect them and keep them inside thehouse.“My son would collect all those pieces and

sew them together. I used to shout at him,telling him he was making the house dirty.

I didn’t understand him at that time.From those pieces hemade a bag. I encour-

aged him to do this course because he lovedsewing. I’m proud of my son with all of myheart,” she says.Sinakho boardmemberMathabo Pharella

said the day was long overdue.“Sinakho touched the relevant youth and

women. I think Sinakho will go far. Thisskill will never die...We are pushing to getmore land for this project,” she says.Thobeka Mvuvu, one of the instructors,

said sewingwas one of her subjects at board-ing school and she did it because shewas notallowed to do agriculture because she wasa girl. In 2013 she left her job.“I make leather bags and sell them. My

mother is also sewing at home. We did a tra-ditional outfit and sewing is also seasonal.It was a bit difficult because some didn’thave money to buy fabric for sewing. Withsewing there’s no way that your kids can goto bed on a hungry stomach,” she says.Dr Guma said the graduation was a deep

seated realization of their common effortsand vision.“Life is not a bad of roses as it has its ups

and downs, but if you have a vision, youwillsucceed. Knowledge gives you an environ-ment to achieve whatever your plans,” hesaid.Phahlana said Sinakho’s philosophy is to

unleash and nurture young people’s talentfrom very young and they must not wait tillthey 18 years old.The event was also attended by sponsors

The importance ofthe land questionWhen we speak of the true liberationof black people, we refer to land. Youdo not speak of liberating the Africanpeople if you do not talk about gettingback the land that was stolen from us.The land in which our roots aredeeply entrenched, the land of ourancestors and children. 22 years intothis so called free South Africa, blackpeople are still landless and dispos-sessed. We are a nation that bragsmost about having the best constitu-tion. The very same constitution(emphasis on chapter 25) that protectswhite privilege, and prevents blackpeople from getting their land back,because disposession was made legal.The Bill of Rights makes no mentionto the right of the black people totheir land. After the Land Audit wasconducted is 2013, it was a rudeawakening of what a fallacy thisdemocracy is. It revealed that theminority, white people, that consti-tutes 9% of the population, own 79%of our land. I can not stress theimportance of land enough, when it issaid that 90% of all wars that werefought in history were over land. The“willing buyer - willing seller” policyhas got to be the most absurd thingever. How can you buy back what hasbeen stolen from you? It is that LandAct of 1913, that stripped the Azanianpeople off their livelihood when 87%of their land was confiscated. Peoplewho own land do not have to rely onother people for their survival. Werely on the anti-black government forRDP houses, when we know that RDPhouses do not equate to justice. Thereis no substitute for our land. To us,the children of the Soil, land has

more than economic value. As Dr.Christopher Zambakari once said,“Identity is linked to land, which actsas a source of livelihood, wealth,social peace and holds a ceremonialvalue.”We are a people of rich cultureand tradition. For most ceremoniesthat connect us with our ancestors, acow or goat has to be slaughtered.How are we to have healthy cattlewhen we do not have grazing land forthem to feed. We used to stand on thehighest peak on the mountains andcall on our Supreme Creator to giveus rain for our crops, now we havebeen removed from our sacred spacesand do not even have crops to prayfor. When we had land, to us, rainwas a blessing. Now, to us rain is acurse because it floods the slums welive in. Land and it’s people areinseparable twins. When land wastaken away from us, we were strippedoff our identity, our spirituality anddignity. Land was and still is theumbilical cord that connects us to ourSupreme Creator. That umbilical cordwas cut by foreigners and left usseparated from the source of ourexistence. We now have to struggle foran identity, in that quest we have lostour dignity. Joram Nyathi once put itthat: “Without land, there is nocountry and there is no point inclaiming a country when it’s land isheld by foreigners.” There is norainbow in this nation, because thereis no nation to begin with, justanother fallacy that I refuse tosubscribe to. The importance ofthe land questionWhen we speak of the true liberationof black people, we refer to land. Youdo not speak of liberating the Africanpeople if you do not talk about gettingback the land that was stolen from us.The land in which our roots aredeeply entrenched, the land of ourancestors and children. 22 years intothis so called free South Africa, blackpeople are still landless and dispos-sessed. We are a nation that bragsmost about having the best constitu-tion. The very same constitution(emphasis on chapter 25) that protectswhite privilege, and prevents blackpeople from getting their land back,because disposession was made legal.The Bill of Rights makes no mentionto the right of the black people totheir land. After the Land Audit wasconducted is 2013, it was a rudeawakening of what a fallacy thisdemocracy is. It revealed that theminority, white people, that consti-tutes 9% of the population, own 79%of our land. I can not stress theimportance of land enough, when it issaid that 90% of all wars that werefought in history were over land. The“willing buyer - willing seller” policyhas got to be the most absurd thingever. How can you buy back what hasbeen stolen from you? It is that LandAct of 1913, that stripped the Azanianpeople off their livelihood when 87%of their land was confiscated. Peoplewho own land do not have to rely onother people for their survival. Werely on the anti-black government forRDP houses, when we know that RDPhouses do not equate to justice. Thereis no substitute for our land. To us,the children of the Soil, land has

more than economic value. As Dr.Christopher Zambakari once said,“Identity is linked to land, which actsas a source of livelihood, wealth,social peace and holds a ceremonialvalue.”We are a people of rich cultureand tradition. For most ceremoniesthat connect us with our ancestors, acow or goat has to be slaughtered.How are we to have healthy cattlewhen we do not have grazing land forthem to feed. We used to stand on thehighest peak on the mountains andcall on our Supreme Creator to giveus rain for our crops, now we havebeen removed from our sacred spacesand do not even have crops to prayfor. When we had land, to us, rainwas a blessing. Now, to us rain is acurse because it floods the slums welive in. Land and it’s people areinseparable twins. When land wastaken away from us, we were strippedoff our identity, our spirituality anddignity. Land was and still is theumbilical cord that connects us to ourSupreme Creator. That umbilical cordwas cut by foreigners and left usseparated from the source of ourexistence. We now have to struggle foran identity, in that quest we have lostour dignity. Joram Nyathi once put itthat: “Without land, there is nocountry and there is no point inclaiming a country when it’s land isheld by foreigners.” There is norainbow in this nation, because thereis no nation to begin with, justanother fallacy that I refuse tosubscribe to. to take a back seat on Wednesday whenthey host the June 16 Dave SpenceMemo-rial 10km race.

RCS Gugulethu AC chairman ThobileNdzube said theywere looking forward toa big field and a successful race.“I know runners like to visit Gugulethu

for this particular race and we are readyto handle them with care,” said Ndzube.He said parking, which tends to be a

problem inmanyraceswouldbe “securedand under guard.”

“This is that time of the year, our June16th race is here, we will be hosting theWP clubs, holiday makers as well as run-ners wanna be. As we always do whenhost a race, we do a dry run of the route,making our community aware of the racehappening in their own neighbourhoodaswell asmaking sure our visitors fellowrunners have an awesome experience inour kasi,” he said.On Sunday June 12 the club will meet

at NY 49 Stadium for a club run takingthe exact race route e run the 10k routeof the race. “ Let us come out in numbers,wearing our club gear, orange and blackmust be the the order of the day in thestreets of Gugs,” he said.

has been invited by the InternationalCycling Union to take part in the Afri-

can Women’s Cycling Team Training Campin Switzerland.The camp, from 9 June to 1 August will

enable Tshoko to take part in a number ofEuropean races.Tshok said: “Something like this only

comes around once in a lifetime. It meansa lot, and it’s a great opportunity that I in-tend on grabbing with both hands.”She began cycling at the age of 12, joining

a safe cycling programme introduced by Ve-lokhaya Life Cycling Academy.“They taught us how to ride a bicycle and

about all the rules and safety of the road,”

she said.After winning some races, Tshoko soon

realised that she really did love cycling.“It was in my heart, and I wanted to

achieve more and succeed in life,” she add-ed.Tshoko,23, said that being able to repre-

sent her team and country is a huge hon-our.“It’s a great way and opportunity to in-

spire other up-and-coming young femalecyclists like myself. It feels like a dream–it’s going to be my first time training andracing in Europe,” she said.The Time Freight eTeam rider feels that

the opportunity is an indication of howmuch she has grown as a cyclist.

“It’s all about believing in yourself, follow-ing your heart, determination, dedication tothe love of cycling and the belief that anythingis possible,” she added.“I would like to take this opportunity to

thank Cycling South Africa, the UCI WorldCycling Centre, and TimeFreight for support-ing me; making this dream become a reality.I never thought something like this would

happen so soon in my cycling career.I always saw it as a dream to be able to go

to Europe and represent my country,” shesaid.Being part of the African team, Tshoko

feels, will also help her to meet riders fromother nations, and keep learning throughout.“I’m so excited-I can’t wait to experience
