Are you the good or bad guyI was listening to Jabu Pule (remem-

ber him?) telling a radio presenterhow he would not play soccer well

without taking one or two drinks. He had to take one or two. And when

he did, he played excellent football. You can say that’s a lie. That’s not

true. But that’s because you do notknow. You’ve never done such things.Or, you are lying to yourself. Youcontinue to. You know, there are folkslike that?Folks who would rather tell a lie than

tell the truth. Well, I don’t know whatmade Jabu to come clean. Maybe hecares. We all say we care. But we donot put that into action. Well, Jabu did.He is a great guy, and we wish him

well. But I’d like to explore this topic, that of lying to ourselves. Why do wedo it? I guess it is because we want tosuppress the truth. We are two in one. There is one good guy. And there is

one bad guy. And then there is you. Allin one. That is what I know. The badguy is in charge of us. He is in com-

plete control. And he knows it. He is asmart guy. He won’t show that he is.He gives you a free ride to ruin yourlife. It may not look like that. But inthe end, it may turn out that way. When you are ruined you are alone. No one is there for you. You are

alone. The guy that told you to ruinyour life has deserted you. He is allgone. Sad but that is how it is. Welisten to people that tell us to ruin ourlives. We do not listen to those that tellus to love ourselves. Don’t rush tothings. Be diligent. Build your life. Wedon’t listen to them. We think they are

squares. When growing up. I was toldthere were a narrow and a wide road. And I did not want to listen to that. I

thought, what a boring yarn. It’s not true. But I can see them now.

I can see people who are running fromboredom; who are running away fromthemselves.Who does not want to be by them-

selves. People who do not want to reada book, or build a dream. I see peoplewho want to be with friends; who arealways searching for company. And technology has made it easy to

find company: smart phones. What areyoung people doing jabbing thosephones? Who are they talking to?Sometimes smiling secretly as if they

don’t want you to know? Are they lying to themselves? They

may think they are not. But you neverknow. A monster may come into yourlife. And then what? And, as long asyou are not working on your dream, you are lying to yourself.Stay positive.

Schools a primary health priorityMANDLA MAHASHE

A project by theWestern Cape Govern-ment is set to kill two birds with onestone.

The Wellness Mobile Clinic is a projectin collaboration with the private sectorwhich offers eye and dental screening aswell as immunization for learners at prima-ry schools in the province.

This flagship project of theWestern CapeGovernment was rolled out in 2014 as atransversal strategy by the Departments ofHealth and Education. The project was thefirst in which the two departments are col-laborating to advance the IntegratedSchool Health Programme.

On Tuesday, education MEC DebbieSchäfer and health MEC NomafrenchMbombo visited Mpendulo Primary schoolin Makhaza, Khayelitsha in an attempt toensure that communities are aware of theservices that are available to Grades R andone learners.

Pheliswa Busika, Mpendulo Primaryprincipal, said that the project has helpedthe school address two major problems;learner health and absenteeism.

“Many of the parents work at jobs whereif they are absent they don’t get paid, so byhaving these health checks conducted atour schools on the same day we have savedthem so much time. The initiative alsohelps in identifying problems at an earlierstage as well,” she said.

She said that she was also happy that thelearners underwent immunisation asmany parents do not understand its impor-tance.

“Sometimes when the child misses im-munizations the parents don’t paymuch at-tention to it as they don’t grasp the impor-tance of immunizations and the ramifica-tions of not undergoing it,” she said. Shealso said that she wished that the cliniccould visit the schools at least once amonth.

The project has been running since lastyear and has conducted more than 4000screenings. The mobile unit is a bus thatvisits various schools in the province toconduct these screenings.

Each Wellness Mobile for School Healthincludes a consultation room where gener-al health screening can be performed, adental unit section for screening for oralhealth and rendering of dental and oral hy-giene services and an optometry unit, forthe testing of eyesight in order to providelearners with spectacles if needed.

“The Western Cape Government is com-mitted to providing quality health care ser-vices to the entire population in the West-ern Cape. The focus is on prevention andpromotion ofwellness rather than the cura-tive. This project is playing such a key rolein particularly poor and rural areas, screening learners for conditions that re-quire the necessary intervention” saidMbombo.

The total number of schools served by themobiles since the start of the service is 318.

The total numberof learnerswhobenefit-

ted from the different components of the ser-vice amounts to 29 423.

“We are really excited about being able tobringhealth care to schoolsusing state of theart technology. We have discovered thatthere are a number of children who havesimple health problems, such as bad eye-sight, that are often left undetected andwhich negatively affect their schoolwork.

It is a tragedy if the reason people cannotread is not because they do not have theability, but because they cannot see prop-erly. The reasons that these issues are notdetected often relate to the fact that the par-ents are not able to afford screening suchas this. The mobile clinics have alreadymade a huge contribution in addressingthis problem” said Schäfer.

Manzo’s netball trio to representMANDLA MAHASHE

Mfuleni’s Manzomthombo Senior Sec-ondary has earned a reputation asone the best netballing teams in the

province and this weekend they are deter-mined to prove this point.

The school’s under 16, 17 and 19 teamswillbe representing the Western Cape at the Na-tional Netball Championships in Boksburg.

They left on Wednesday heading to thetourney which starts tomorrow (Friday 31July). This is the first time that three teamsfrom the school have earned a slot to repre-sent the province at this level.

The under 16s are going into the tourna-ment as champions after clinching the titlelast year. They will however be buoyed bythe presence of their fellow schoolmates inthe competition this year.

According to Coach Frank Xaba this wasexpected as the other two teams have beenknocking on the door.

“Last year, our under 17s and 19s wererunner ups in their divisions and could notmake to the nationals as only the winnersof the divisions progressed. This year we

worked even harder and the results were allthe proof needed,” said Xaba.

The teams went through rigorous compe-tition and won their way out of the regionalcompetition as well as the district competi-tion which meant that they can representthe province alongside other high schoolsnamely Durbanville, Heidevelt, Stellen-bosch and De Kuilen.

The schools represent different leagueswithin schools netball. Xaba said that theywere very confident of their chances in thecompetition.

“We are hoping to do better than last yearas our preparations have showed us that weare currently playing our best netball at themoment.

Leading to this competition we have beenplaying with local schools and teams. Ourunder 16s have proved to be superior to theircounterparts and we are confident that ourother teams will do well,” said Xaba.

Asked what their secret was Xaba wasopen and said that dedication and commit-ment were key in their team’s success.

“As a coach I am very dedicated and verypassionate and that trickles down to the

players andwe have received amazing sup-port from school staff and the parents,”said Xaba.

John Matiso, school principal, sharedthe same sentiments with Xaba regardingthe dedication and the commitment of theteam.

“Our netball team begin training in Jan-uary and even playwith local teams;whichis something that you don’t see in otherschools.

That is the kind of dedication that theyhave. As a result they are among the bestin the country despite the challenges theyfaced,” said Matiso.

He said that one of the biggest challengesthey faced was lack of funding but becauseof their great track record, corporate spon-sors have availed funding for their activi-

ties.“We are very fortunate that through com-

munity leadership that we have Eskom asa sponsor who has made sure that we havea transport and accommodation for the com-petition.

We are hoping that we will do well in thecompetition,” said Matiso.

He said that the target was to have at leasttwo of the teams coming back as champions.

Heurgedcommunities to encourageyouthtoparticipate in the sports aswell as arts andculture activities as a deterrent to drug use.

Under 16 sharp shooter Sisanda Sithongasaid that they we determined to come backtriumphant.

“We have been playing well and we haveshowed our class. We will bring in the tro-phy,” she confidently said.

Derby live at Mzoli’sSPINDOG MOTSAMAI

You can never hide from the Sowetoderby!

For instance, patrons at Mzoli’sPlace will find their taste buds lolling be-tween a sumptous piece of meat and theireyeballs roving on a big screen on Satur-day.

This will be thanks to the live soccer ac-tion brought to them by Mzoli FinancialServices (MFS) in partnership with Voda-com.

MFS director Sisanda Masisi Mangele-Ngcauzela said they would be launchingvarious services from Vodacom includingm-Pesa.

“Patrons must come armed with theirID’s and so that we can rica them. Theystand a chance of winning fabulous prizesand learning more about the m-Pesa pre-paid banking service,” she said.

There will be entertainment galore asMC Tsidi Ndlovu will be doing her thingwith a few talented musicians scouted inVisionland.

Meanwhile Thabo Matlaba will mostlikely miss the Carling Black Label Cupclash against rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Sat-urday, after picking up an injury in Orlan-do Pirates’ 1-0 win over CS Sfaxien in theCAF Confederations Cup.

According to the medical department, theBafana Bafana international has suffered agrade two tear of the hamstring and will re-quire treatment and then rehab.

New signing Gift Motupa, has resumedtraining this week albeit a light session.

Tsidi Ndlovu chats to chesanyama boss, Mzoli.
