The race will start at King Edward VI Leisure Centre, with athletes then

following a route through Whittington and Fradley, before

sprinting through the city to the finish line on Stowe Field, against the

picturesque backdrop of Lichfield Cathedral.

Last year more than 1,300 athletes took part, and the event attracted

hundreds of families and friends to the city! This year’s event falls on a

bank holiday, so you may want to prepare for an increase in visitor

numbers, thanks to the half-marathon!

The plays are set to take place both in the Cathedral as well as the

Market Square and other venues across the city and district. The plays

involve more than 600 performers and attract thousands of visitors

and spectators to the city, so prepare to be busier than usual on these

days!

So why not come along, listen, and get into

the spirit?

On Saturday 30 June, the day of the Olympic Torch Relay

Welcome to the second edition of City Speak We have had some great feedback about the first edition of City

Speak and people have told us that they have found it both useful

and informative, which is really good to hear.

In this edition we have featured the upcoming Olympic Torch Relay on the front page, as

recently a lot of traders have mentioned that they don’t know about what is planned for the

day or when the torch is passing through the city and district. The torch relay team, based

at the district council, have also developed a website that is full of information about the

plans for the torch relay day, including road closures, event information and more. I would

encourage anyone who isn’t sure what’s going on, or just wants to know more to visit the

website at www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/olympictorch

I would also like to remind you all that City Speak is for everyone to contribute to, and if you

have something you would like to share with local traders in the next edition, we’d love to

hear from you. Just email your story ideas to [email protected]

To help you plan your stories, we’ve included the dates of the next editions of this

newsletter on page 8.

We hope you find this edition useful, and if you would like us to feature anything in future

editions of City Speak, please let us know.

Brighten up with a Jubilee hanging basket Update from the Chamber of Trade & Commerce

Could you brighten up your premises with a little extra colour? Why not help

to make the city centre a more attractive place for shoppers and visitors by

supporting the Chamber of Trade & Commerce’s efforts to create a city in

bloom this summer?

Every year, the Chamber teams up with Woodhouse Green Nurseries to provide a

spectacular display of colour, with over 120 baskets brightening up the fronts of

shops and premises around the city centre. This year the displays will reflect the

Queen’s Jubilee theme with blooms in red, white and blue and additional ribbon

decorations.

If you pay for your basket by 31 May, you’ll get a discounted price of £46 per

basket. This includes hanging, weekly watering, by Lichfield City Council, and

disposal in the autumn. After 31 May they will cost £49.50 each. Any

non-Chamber of Trade members who order a hanging basket will also get free

membership for 2012, worth £40!

Lots of traders have already booked their baskets, so please order

yours soon to avoid disappointment. To order call Rob Young on

01543 473183.

Friary Outer update www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/friaryouter Update from Lichfield District Council We updated you in the last issue of City Speak about the development taking

place on the site of the Friary Outer car park. Since the last update, national

contractor, Miller Construction, has been appointed to build the Friary Outer

redevelopment. Miller, who started work on site in early April, will manage the

scheme from their Midlands and South West office.

Dates for your diary

Early April - ground and archaeology works begin

Late April/early May - hoardings go up around site

Early May - large scale development starts on site

If you have any enquiries about the site management, such as questions about

noise or building issues, please contact the site manager, Rob Stuart, on 07881

948751 or email [email protected] Rob will be on site most days and will be

able to help you with most enquiries. If you have any questions about the devel-

opment partners, please contact Helen Cook, Property & Projects Manager at

Lichfield District Council, on 01543 308252 or email

[email protected]

Car parking We’ve been monitoring our car parks closely since the closure of

Friary Outer. We know during busy periods, drivers may struggle to find a space in

both University and Bird Street car parks and we are sorry for any inconvenience

you or your customers experience. That said, we know at these times, there are

still ample spaces elsewhere, including the multi-storey, Redcourt, Lombard

Street, and Backcester car parks. Because we know we need to encourage people

to change their parking habits, we’ll be distributing car park postcards to city

businesses in mid-May to help you signpost your customers to alternative car

parks. If you have any questions email [email protected]

We’re bunting the city this

summer Update from Lichfield District Council

To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee,

the passing of the Olympic Torch and The

Lichfield Festival, we’ll be putting bunting up

in city streets this summer from mid-late May.

We’ll be using the Christmas lights hooks to

hang the bunting, so the streets that will get

the red, white and blue treatment will include:

Tamworth Street (from the old cinema), Bore

Street, Dam Street, Bird Street, Market Street,

and Market Square.

If you have any questions or want to put

similar bunting in your street, please contact

Elizabeth Thatcher on 01543 308781 or email

The search is on for a city Christmas tree! Appeal from the Lichfield Chamber of Trade & Commerce You’ll be forgiven for thinking it’s too early to be even contemplating

Christmas, but the Chamber of Trade and Commerce has launched its

‘Search for a city Christmas tree’ appeal!

Last year’s tree was kindly donated by a local resident who had a fir tree in

their garden that had grown too large, and needed felling. The beautiful

tree was displayed in all its Christmas glory on the corner of The Friary and

St John street.

Richard Lewis, from the Chamber, commented: “Buying a 30 to 40ft

Christmas Tree is really expensive. By recycling trees from people’s

gardens, not only are we ensuring we get a beautiful tree for the city, we

are also keeping costs down. If anyone has a tree they want to remove, that

isn’t covered by a tree preservation or in a conservation area, we can help

with the felling and transportation to the city centre. We’d also promote

the kind donation in the local press.” If you or someone you know has such

a tree to offer please contact Richard Lewis on 01543 250016.

Roger Black at the Florette

Lichfield Dash - 30 June Update from KP Events

Florette Lichfield Dash on Saturday 30 June as part

of a celebration of sports the city is hosting to

coincide with the arrival and passage of the Olympic

Torch on the same day.

Roger Black will be on hand to give runners advice,

hints and tips before they run. Kevin Wilson of

Lichfield Dash commented: "We're all thrilled to be

welcoming Roger Black, one of Britain's most

respected Olympians, to the Dash. It's all very

exciting."

The Dash itself takes place at 12 noon against the

chimes of the noon day clock. Before the race there

will be a range of activities for all ages to enjoy.

Dash and other KP events, call Kevin Wilson on

The Lichfield Boutique Market Update from Three Spires Shopping Centre

In March, Three Spires Shopping Centre introduced the very first Lichfield

Boutique Market. A vacant shop in Bakers Lane was temporarily

transformed into a hive of activity as it played host to 20 local Staffordshire

designers. Unique glassware, home furnishings, ceramics, jewellery and

accessories were on sale, which provided a fabulous opportunity for

shoppers to buy gifts direct from designers in time for Mothers’ Day.

Three Spires Centre Manager, Lisa Prokopiou commented: "The aim of the

Lichfield Boutique Market is to promote and support local Staffordshire

talent, whilst offering customers the chance to buy high quality, unique yet

affordable products alongside high street brands.”

The next Lichfield Boutique Market will take place on Friday 4 &

Saturday 5 May, and will offer two storeys of vintage & country fashion and

home-styling in 8-10 Bakers Lane (next to the Body Shop). In addition, 38-40

Bakers Lane (next to Costa Coffee) will host a wedding boutique.

Centre, on [email protected] / 07713311350

Dash park in long-stay car parks Update by Lichfield District Council

Following the popularity of Dash Park (our cash free

parking system) in short-stay car parks, we’ve extended

it to long-stay car parks.

How does it work?

Customers register online at www.dashpark.co.uk or

by calling 08456 800 104.

They pay for their parking using their mobile phone.

When our parking officers see a car without a ticket,

they enter the registration number into their

computer, and it will tell them whether the driver has

paid using Dash Park.

So, if your customers are running late back to their car,

or worried their parking is going to run out, they can

extend their payment at the touch of a button (provided

they haven't exceeded the maximum stay in a car park).

Transaction charges When visitors use the service, they

will be charged an additional 10p per booking.

If you want a set of leaflets to promote Dash Park to

your customers, call Nicky Haycock on 01543 687550 or

email [email protected]

Celebrate and support our markets on

our National Markets Day Update from Lichfield City Council

National Markets Day was a suggestion put forward by Mary Portas in

her report to the government following her investigation into the

state of Britain’s high streets. Mary Portas believes thriving markets

breathe life and energy into town and city centres like Lichfield.

We’re planning to celebrate our National Markets Day in style on

Saturday 7 July* and we want lots of people to join in, both trading

and buying!

To make it even easier for people who’ve always wanted to ’try their

hand’ at market trading, we’ll be offering rents at a reduced cost in a

special indoor market in the Guildhall. This is the same day as the

Lichfield Festival Market, so the city will be packed with people keen

to spend their money on innovative products. It will be held in the

Guildhall as the Market Square pitches are currently fully booked.

So if you, or someone you know, would like to try out market trading,

contact Rachel Clive, Markets Officer on 01543 309853.

*National Markets Day will take place

on Saturday 23 June, but towns and

cities can celebrate it on any day up to

Saturday 7 July.

Queen’

 Morris dancing, face painting and

more!

The Big Lunch is being organised by

Lichfield District Council, The Lichfield

expecting large crowds, and it could be

a great opportunity for traders to

promote their take-away lunch offers to

party-goers. To find out more visit

City traders bid for a share of £2m

Portas funding An update from Lichfield City Centre Coordination Group

In March, traders and organisations submitted an application to become one of

24 Portas Pilot towns nationwide.

The application was submitted in response to an announcement by the

government that £2 million is up for grabs for towns and cities across the

country that can show they can revitalise their high streets. The funding

announcement came on the back of a report written by Mary Portas ‘Queen of

Shops’ that sets out how communities can turn their high streets around, bring

in new businesses, and attract new customers.

Brian Carruthers, Managing Director of Tempest Ford, explains: “Over 30

traders and organisations, including Obsessions Salon and Spa, Friary Shoes,

Lichfield Live, Lichfield Mysteries, Lichfield district and city councils and local

chambers, came together to come up with ideas to revitalise Lichfield City

centre and boost vital footfall. The application, which includes ideas like

appointing a city centre champion, as well as a competition for local

entrepreneurs to win 12 months’ free rent in a city centre shop, also

features a plan to turn Lichfield into the Covent Garden of the Midlands.”

Lisa Prokopiou, Centre Manager of the Three Spires Shopping Centre,

commented: “Part of the application process was to record a short film

featuring traders explaining why we want to become a Portas Pilot city. On

behalf of everyone involved in the bid, I’d like to say a huge thank you to

everyone who took part so enthusiastically.”

The Portas Pilot application was submitted by Lichfield District

Council, on behalf of the group, on 30 March 2012. It will be

assessed by the Department of Communities & Local

Government. The team will find out in May whether or not the

bid has been successful.

Councillor Mike Wilcox, Leader of Lichfield District Council, concluded: “The

ideas the team came up with were fantastic, and the enthusiasm shown by

businesses and organisations across the city was inspiring. Whether or not we

become a Portas Pilot, the work the team has done to pull the application

together will stand us in good stead for future partnership working and city

centre improvements. I’d like to say well done to everyone who contributed to

the Portas Pilot application.” To read the Portas Pilot application, visit

High Street

Innovation Fund An update from Lichfield District Council

Lichfield District Council was awarded £100,000

on 2 April as part of the government's High

Street Innovation Fund. The fund was

announced by the government on Monday 2

April as part of a range of measures under the

new 'Portas Plus Plan'. The £10 million pot of

funding has been shared between high

streets that are affected by empty shops.

The aim of the money is to help councils, local

businesses and partners revive local high streets

through a range of initiatives. Councillor Mike

Wilcox, Leader of Lichfield District Council

commented: "We were delighted to hear the

unexpected news that we have been awarded

£100,000 funding to help boost local high

streets. We also understand that despite being

awarded this funding, Lichfield could still be in

the running to become a Portas Pilot city if our

application is successful. We are working with

local businesses, local councillors and traders,

through the Lichfield City Centre Coordination

Group, to understand how the High Street Fund

Innovations monies can be spent across the

district, and will be developing plans, with

traders and businesses, in the coming weeks

and months." To find out more email
