JANUARY 2020 City & Southwest NEWSLETTER: CROWS NEST STATION JANUARY 2020 Community welcomes TBM Mabel Tunnel boring machine (TBM) Mabel reached the edge of Sydney Harbour in December, arriving to an audience of locals gathered outside the Blues Point retrieval site. The TBM’s arrival marked the end of the northern section of tunnelling on the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project. The TBM broke through about 30 metres beneath the ground into the specially constructed retrieval shaft at Blues Point. The TBM is being dismantled and lifted out with the large components being removed by barge on Sydney Harbour to be returned to the manufacturer. TBM Mabel is the third mega borer to arrive at Blues Point, after launching in February and travelling 6.2 kilometres from Chatswood, with successive breakthroughs via the new Metro stations at Crows Nest and Victoria Cross. It follows the breakthrough of TBM Wendy and specialised under-harbour mega borer Kathleen, which is building twin tunnels deep beneath Sydney Harbour. TBM Kathleen has already been launched from Barangaroo to complete the second and final under-harbour crossing later this year. Continuing activities across the alignment includes constructing safety cross passages around every 240 metres between the main tunnels created by the TBMs, and installing the concrete base in the tunnels for the future rail tracks. City & SouthwestNEWSLETTER: CROWS NEST STATION JANUARY 2020

Community welcomes TBM Mabel Tunnel boring machine (TBM) Mabel reached the edge of Sydney Harbour in December, arriving to an audience of locals gathered outside the Blues Point retrieval site.

TBM Mabel arrives at Blues Point to complete her tunnelling

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. It will transform Sydney, delivering more trains and faster services for customers across the network.

Sydney Metro City & Southwest extends the new metro network from the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour, through the CBD, and west to Bankstown.

John Holland CPB Ghella (JHCPBG) is building the 15.5 kilometre long twin railway tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham and excavating six new metro stations.

Activity inside the Crows Nest station box

TBM Wendy has also completed tunnelling

Tunnelling support activities at Crows Nest With tunnel boring machines (TBMs) Wendy and Mabel having completed their section of tunnelling, the Crows Nest site is now operating as a support site for ongoing activity within the tunnels. This will include work to install the tunnel floor which will support the future rail tracks. Demobilisation of plant and equipment on site is now complete.

Operations for the tunnel works will be based out of the Crows Nest station site over the next few months. This will include removing tunnelling support equipment and pouring a concrete slab in the base of the tunnel between Chatswood and Victoria Cross.

TBM Kathleen relaunches to build second under-harbour tunnel Specialised tunnel boring machine (TBM) Kathleen has begun tunnelling again after being returned and reassembled in the Barangaroo station cavern to complete the second under-harbour crossing.

The TBM made history last year when it completed the first historic tunnel deep beneath Sydney Harbour, breaking through at Blues Point with a spectacular splash.

TBM Kathleen launched in June from the new Barangaroo Station site and took just over four months to tunnel nearly one kilometre to reach the northern side of the harbour at Blues Point. Kathleen is expected to complete the second tunnel in the second quarter of 2020.

Upcoming utility investigationsSydney Metro will be undertaking utility investigation work around the Crows Nest Station site in January and February 2020. This work is being done as part of the Integrated Station Development (ISD) project, and the majority will be done out-of-hours. Impacted residents will receive separate notifications with further information. This work is not part of the JHCPBG’s tunnelling contract and will be undertaken by Sydney Metro.
