•Responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the city.•Operates Sign Shop that fabricates and maintains traffic,, parking, and street name signs. Maintains pavement markings•Maintains city traffic signals•Heads Non-Motorized Task Force
•Regulate and inspect workperformed within the publicright-of-way•Issues permits for work in right of way.•Manages all federally or state funded road and bridge construction projects on major thoroughfares
•Weekly refuse pickup•Quarterly bulk pickup•Maintain bulk drop-off and recycling locations•Yard waste recycling•Recycling program•Environmental Control & Enforcement Services
•Maintains city streets, alleys andsidewalks that are under the City’s jurisdiction•This work includes:
•Resurfacing•Pothole repair•Snow and ice removal•Street Sweeping•Special Event Street Closure

DPW leadership is committed to creating a work atmosphere that is conducive for effectiveness and providing the tools that facilitate excellent service delivery to our customers, while operating within the limits of a defined budget. Our committed DPW employees perform the following tasks:
*Rebuild bridges and repave roads *Operate an integrated solid waste system that promotes recycling and the reuse of all collected solid waste commodities *Clear the streets of snow in very challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions. *Ensure that travel is safe and smooth in an environment that is visually pleasing. *Perform their responsibilities knowing they care and they know that their work directly impacts your quality of life.

The Department of Public Works shall:
1. Provide for the management and collection of all solid waste. 2. Cooperate with other City departments and regional agencies to enforce
both City of Detroit Municipal Codes, Chapter 9 (Property Maintenance) and Chapter 22 (Solid Waste), and other environmental statues except as otherwise provided by law or charter.
3. Provide for the construction, maintenance and engineering design of streets and alleys.
4. Plan, establish and maintain systems and devices for safe and expeditious regulation and control of traffic within the city.
5. Perform other functions necessary to improve the quality of the environment as provided by law or ordinance.
