ROADS DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION UPDATE - JULY 2013
DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC DISRUPTIONS
As downtown Edmonton continues to grow and revitalize, significant construction continues, and with it associated
traffic impacts. The City plans and stages construction projects to sustainably support downtown revitalization while
managing traffic disruptions as efficiently as possible. The City is also responsible for managing and accommodating
other various road disruptions such as private development, emergency utility repairs, planned events and festivals
Transportation Services makes every effort to limit the impact to traffic, however it cannot always anticipate where
and when emergency repairs or other unforeseen roadway incidents, such as vehicle collisions, may require additional
road closures. As such, there will sometimes be higher congestion levels into and out of downtown during construction
season.
WEATHER IMPACTS
Despite a rainy June, poor weather will have little impact on most road project schedules. The longest delays in City
road construction are on projects where excavation is ongoing due to the time required to dry out the site before work
can continue. Fortunately, grind and pave locations can continue shortly after rainfall as their work surfaces dry more
quickly.
The Citys priority when dealing with inclement weather is to make certain that work is completed to standard.
This ensures durability, longevity and safety for road users. While completing a project on time is important, it is a
secondary consideration to having work done properly the first time.
The City reminds drivers to respect barricades even in poor weather conditions, as work may be ongoing and hazards
present despite workers not being visible on site.
