Student Speakers
On her first day at City College of San Francisco (CCSF) in the Fall 2009, Afara Lalaind had just two goals, one was to show up every day, and the other was to pass every class with a letter grade of “B” or higher. Three and a half years later, she finds herself as one of two student speakers for the 2013 Commencement Ceremony and a voice for over 99,000 students. She is truly humbled by the opportunity that CCSF has given her to speak for the students who despite obstacles and challenges, continue to strive toward excellence.
Lalaind chose her major in the Fire Science Technology Program. She remembers the day she started the CCSF Fire Academy, her Training Instructor said that the academy was going to change her for the rest of her life. The Fire Science Technology Program requires an incredible sense of responsibility for maintaining high moral character, integrity, honesty, and veracity, all of which Lalaind desires to instill in her own children. The program humbled Lalaind and has demonstrated to her what it means to help others before self.
Lalaind will graduate with an A.S. in Fire Science from CCSF with honors and plans on transferring to a four-year university to earn her bachelor’s degree. Through CCSF, she has been able to achieve her dreams under circumstances that once seemed unbelievable. She would like the 2013 graduating class to know that their education achieved at CCSF is just the beginning of a lifetime of possibilities, and that they will be armed with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to tackle the many challenges that will surely come their way.
Carl Irons returned to school after nearly 25 years of incarceration. It was while incarcerated that he developed an interest in the law. Currently he does some freelance paralegal work under contract to attorneys. Being a full-time student while attempting to earn a living has been challenging, however Carl realizes there is more to life than just that.
For nearly twenty years Carl has been a volunteer facilitator with the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), an organization that conducts workshops both in the community and in correctional facilities. AVP workshops are experiential in nature, allowing participants to work on communication skills, community building, problem solving and compassion. Additionally, he works with a small environmental non-profit, The Away Station, located in Marin County. Time at The Away Station is spent in activities as diverse as driving a truck, managing social media, or producing and placing advertising.
Carl Irons has been attending City College of San Francisco since Spring 2010 and will graduate with honors, receiving his Associate of Science degree in Paralegal/Legal Studies. He has been accepted to San Francisco State University where he will major in political science. Currently he is a member of the Second Chance Program and on the Advisory Board of Extended Opportunities Programs and Services (EOPS).
Guest Speaker
Richard Lui is an American journalist and anchor. He anchors NBC’s Early Today and Dayside on MSNBC, where his focus is politics. Lui is also a rotating news anchor for NBC’s weekend Today show and contributes reports for NBC News Investigations Unit.
Lui previously anchored at CNN Worldwide, solo-anchoring the 10 am edition of HLN’s Morning Express and leading political reporting on Morning Express with Robin Meade. He also anchored and reported for CNN Domestic and CNN International. When Lui joined CNN Headline News in 2007 he became the first Asian American male to anchor a daily, national cable news show in the U.S. Mediaite has ranked Lui #101 in News Buzz on its Power Grid Influence Index of TV Anchors / Hosts.
Lui’s passion for politics started in the 70s, debating California’s controversial Proposition 13 on bus rides to school. That interest turned into a job at the age of 19: campaign manager for San Francisco College Board incumbent Alan Wong.
In the 1990s, Lui reported for news radio KALX, where he was assigned to stories including Dianne Feinstein’s first successful U.S. Senate campaign and the Rodney King verdict and riots.
Later in the 2000s, Lui reported from Asia during an increasingly heated political climate. Two Muslim countries in Southeast Asia transformed: Indonesia’s Sukarno family was defeated after rule spanning over half a century; and Malaysia’s prime minister, after almost a quarter of a century handed over power. He was at Channel NewsAsia, an English-only news network spanning 20 countries and territories.
In addition to his political and journalism work, Lui spent 15 years in business with Fortune 500 and technology companies. This included work at Oliver Wyman and patenting and launching the first bank-centric payment system in a Citibank carve-out he founded with fellow University of Michigan MBA alumni.
Lui has been active in community leadership for 25 years in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and U.S. He’s led pro bono strategy consulting teams and is a board member for non-profits in homeless and affordable housing. Lui often speaks on human trafficking and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity internationally.
In addition, Lui’s community work includes being an ambassador for APIASF (Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund), an organization broadening awareness of Asian American communities living in poverty and without access to college. Lui is also a national spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation and global ambassador for Plan International.
Before college, Lui worked for five years in food and beverage. He later attended City College of San Francisco, where he earned an Associate Degree, and went on to graduate from UC Berkeley. More recently, Lui earned an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.
