The Present.

PeepKonect Headquarters in California.

Day.

LUKE RUCKER, a twenty-something founder of a social

networking site called PeepKonect.com appears enraged

as he argues with a Senator on a potential security

breach within the PeepKonect site. The Senator says he

plans on introducing new privacy legislation in the

senate. Rucker’s computer is open with the PeepKonect

site visible on the screen. Rucker clicks the

“unfriend” button under a photo of the Senator. He

smiles maliciously.

Scene moves into a kitchen setting. On the kitchen

table is a copy of the Boston Herald. On the front page

is the senator’s face followed by the headline

“Senator’s Death Thought to be Caused by Unorthodox

Electrocution.” ANDREA, a college-aged girl appears and

picks up the paper, takes a look at the headline, and

then sets it back down.

Andrea runs into her room, drops her backpack and opens

her computer. Her fingers fly across the keyboard as

she opens the Internet and logs onto PeepKonect, the

latest and most popular social networking site. She

checks her notifications and waters her plants in Plant

World. She scrolls through her Newsfeed and rolls her

eyes at the comically out of date wall post of her

mother’s old high school friend, whose invite she had

accepted reluctantly. Armed with the knowledge that

her mother neither used PeepKonect nor cared about it,

she went to Sharon’s home page, and unfriended her.

She shrugged, shut her lap top, and proceeded to text

her friend Candice.

Luke Rucker’s office is a masterpiece of intimidation;

his twenty-foot ceilings create an expanse of empty

space, leaving those who enter feeling quite small.

Rucker’s desk is large and black, the wall behind

Rucker is filled with flat television screens all

logged onto PeepKonect. Rucker is working fervently at

his computer when JOSEPH BLANK, his internal security

programmer, walks in. Rucker looks up from his work

momentarily, and then turns his full attention to

Blank. Blank is seated in a small four-legged chair in

front of Rucker’s desk. Rucker draws himself up to his

full height within his seat and looks down at Blank for

a few moments before speaking.

Rucker first informs Blank of the exemplary work he has

done up until now, and how without his help, Rucker

would not have gotten this far. Rucker then discusses

with Blank, in a calm unassuming manner, how he would

like all of the personal information that PeepKonectors

used when they first signed up for a profile to be

databased into his personal computer for research

purposes. He emphasizes the necessity of this being

done quickly, and quietly. Blank looks skeptical and

voices his concerns. Blank stands up quickly, and his

chair pushes back with a loud screech that echoes in

the empty room. Blank looks horrified at Rucker’s lack

of respect for his users and says that under no

uncertain terms would he ever allow such a heinous

security breach.

Rucker, sitting at his desk, sighs, and turns back to

his computer. “I didn’t wanna do this to you, Blank.”

He pulls up Blank’s PeepKonect profile, and point the

cursor to the unfriend button. Blank suddenly becomes

distraught and urges Rucker to reconsider. Blank

suddenly changes his mind on the security proposal and

agrees to move forward with Rucker’s request.

A few days later Andrea is sitting in the living room,

texting her friends as usual, when she overhears a

slightly distraught conversation between her parents.

Andrea stops texting for a moment and catches her

mother say something about an old high school friend of

hers having passed away a few days prior. Sharon had

been sick for a few years and there was a bizarre

electrical shortage in her home, and she was found dead

near her computer.

Andrea and what appears to be her boyfriend, Caleb, get

into a fight after Andrea heard a supposed rumor that

Caleb had spent the night with another girl. Andrea

becomes visibly upset but decides not to confront Caleb

and instead runs to the computer lab and unfriends him

from her Peep Konect. She looks slightly satisfied with

her revenge and wipes a tear from her face.

The next morning Andrea sits up in bed. There is a

knock at the door. She quickly hides the pile of used

tissues as her mother enters in her bathrobe, her eyes

red with worry, a phone held limply in her hand.

Andrea looks at her mother with concern. Her mother

tells Andrea that Caleb tragically passed away last

night. Andrea gasps audibly, and although her emotions

are conflicted, due to their recent break up, she

appears shocked and upset. But not just because of his

death. The look on her face implies something is

bizarre about the coincidences of her unfriending the

same two people who later died. Did she inadvertently

do this to Caleb?

Back in California, Blank and Rucker go at it again

over the privacy breaches on PeepKonect. Rucker appears

to have finally had enough and open his computer to

unfriend Blank. Blank struggles to keep Rucker from

doing this but it is too late. Rucker has unfriended

Blank on PeepKonect.

To Rucker’s surprise Blank shows up for work on Monday.

But how could this be? He had most certainly confirmed

Blank’s death sentence by unfriending the traitor on

PeepKonect.

1 INT. PEEPKONECT HEADQUARTERS- DAY 1

LUKE RUCKER sits behind his desk talking softly to hisassociate, HANK SHROUD, as California Senator ROBERT HANSONwalks into the room looking outraged.

HANSONI won’t stand for it Luke.

RUCKERI’m sure you won’t.

HANSONThis is a breach of the user’ssecurity contracts. What you’redoing is incredibly immoral!

RUCKERBut not illegal mister senator.

HANSONIf I had my way it would.

SHROUDAnd what, exactly, do you mean bythat?

HANSONMr. Rucker, I’m coming forwardtomorrow. I’ve let too much ofwhat you wanted to happen, happen.Not anymore. I’m no ones puppet.I...

SHROUD(interrupting)

Cut your own strings, haven’t you?Think you’re going to be your ownman? You’re in too deep Hanson. Ifyou try to take us down you’ll godown with us.

Shroud pauses momentarily

SHROUDYour Senate seat is up for grabs inthe next election, is it not? Andfrom what I’ve heard, the votersmay not be too happy with a man whoso routinely cheats on his wife,that he makes Bill Clinton looklike the Pope.

RUCKERI didn’t think we could, but Shroudfound a way.

HANSONThe Internet User Security Act willpass Rucker, it’s being introducedtomorrow, and there’s nothing youcan do to stop it, I...

RUCKER(interrupting)

...will completely fall on my fatfucking face. Hanson, you’re aweak man with weak morals whodoesn’t know how to stand foranything, and even if you did, youstill wouldn’t be able to make upyour mind. If you really thoughtwhat we were doing was wrong, thenyou should have backed out yearsago. You wouldn’t have helped usre-word our terms of agreement sothat we could sell user’s profilepictures to advertisers. You hadqualms about me then. Oh yes, Iknew, but you did what you weretold, because you’re weak. Andweak men...

HANSON(Interrupting)

At least I’ve found my strength,unlike others.

RUCKER(looking amused)

You remember, I’m sure, that youyourself, still have a PeepKonectaccount?

HANSONNo I don’t. I deleted it.

RUCKERDeleted your access to it,yes. But it can’t be destroyedcompletely without approval from

HANSON(Scared)

Wh-what?

RUCKER(pulling up Hanson’s profile)

Oh yes, that deffense contract youwon for us a few years back. I’mpretty sure you remember what itwas for and did, do you?

HANSONI...please, don’t.

RUCKERDon’t dance around the issue,Senator. It makes you look like asnail dipped in salt.

Hanson jumps from his seat and runs out of the room

SHROUDShould take him out?

RUCKERNo, I’ve got him from here Mark,but thanks for the offer.

Rucker clicks the the mouse on his desk as he smilesmaliciously

2 INT. HOUSE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA- DAY 2

We see ANDREA SIMON walk into her house from the back doorwhere she is greeted by her overly cheerful mother, MRS.SIMON.

MRS. SIMONHello honey, how was your day?

ANDREAFine, nothing special

ANDREA pulls up a stool and sits down at the kitchen counterand thumbs though the newspapers and mail on thecounter. As she flips though the papers she comes acrossthe headline “SENATOR DEAD AT PEEPKONECT HEADQUARTERS” Hermother notices this.

MRS. SIMONIt’s the big news of today SenatorHanson died of a heart attack orsomething at a meeting. It’s goingto have a big affect on theelection this year, of course youwould probably know all about thatif you would have taken that APpolitics class like I wanted you todo.

ANDREAMom, I told you, politics aren’t mything and I wanted to focus on myAP math class this semester.

MRS. SIMONWell there’s nothing wrong withspreading your wings a bit,try doing something new every oncein a while.

ANDREA(Rolls her eyes)

I’m going upstairs .

ANDREA opens the door to her room, its neat, organized andcolorfully decorated. She sits at her desk and opens herlaptop and goes to PEEPKONECT.COM. She scans her profile,notifications and messages. She rolls her eyes as she seesthat one her mom’s friends, CARLY HAMMONS, wrote anembarrassing comment on her wall. MRS. SIMON stands in theopen door frame.

MRS. SIMONI just do not see why you kids likethe Peeptalk thing so much.

ANDREAPeepkonect mom.Sometimes I feel thesame way Mom. Complete strangerscan look at all my personal info.

MRS. SIMONMaybe I need to get on to see whatsits like. Oh my gosh, we can be“peeps” Andrea!

MRS. SIMON leaves the scene laughing.

ANDREA(Angrily)

Jesus Christ Mom, I have enoughproblems as it is with every

We see Andrea’s computer screen, she quickly moves her mouseover the picture of CARLY HAMMONS, her mother’s friend. Shethen clicks the "unfriend" button over the picture.

3 INT. ANDREA’S ROOM - DAY 3

Andrea and her boyfriend, CALEB, are having a heateddiscussion over Andrea’s cell phone.

ANDREA(Emotionally)

Caleb, listen. Damn it Caleb, wouldyou just listen to me for a second.(Pauses) Okay, I’ve been feelingreally hurt. You have not beenpaying any attention to me and itmakes me feel vulnerable andworthless. It’s almost like you seeme as your own personal whore. Youseem to drop off the face of theearth for days at a time, and Ijust don’t understand.

CALEB(Sighs)

I really don’t understand what moreyou want from me. It’s likeeverything I’ve tried hasn’t beengood enough for you. I’m startingto think it’ll be better in thelong run just to end it now.

Andrea loses control and starts to cry.

CALEBWe gave it a good run you know.Andie, you know I will always careabout you.

Caleb pauses for several seconds as Andrea cries softly.

CALEBI just think it would be better tojust take some time and figurethings out for ourselves.

ANDREA(Angrily sobbing)

So basically what I’m hearing isthat I’m not worth one fuckingshit. You’ve made your point prettyclear Caleb. Two fucking years ofmy life and this is how you wantthings to end. Well, you know whatthat’s fine by me. Really Goddamnfine by me. I thought you weredifferent from the other jerks I’vebeen with, but I guess I was wrong.Have a nice fucking day, Caleb.

Andrea clicks end on her cell phone to hang up on the call.Andrea continues to cry until she finally gets up, opens hercomputer and unfriends her former lover from PeepKonect. Themoment she clicks the button Andrea starts crying again. Shecontinues crying until she hears someone elses cries comingfrom downstairs. She wipes her eyes as she stands up andwalks out of her room. She goes to the top of the stairswhere she sees her mother and father, MR. SIMON having aconversation downstairs. Her mother is seen crying as Mr.Simon is seen trying to comfort her.

MRS. SIMON(Crying)

NO! This can’t be, Tom! God no! Ican’t believe Carly is gone!

MR. SIMON(In shock)

Honey, I, I don’t even know what tosay I’m, I’m so sorry. Did they sayhow it happened?

MRS. SIMON(Sniffling)

Her daughter wasn’t very clear.Carly was found on the floor besideher computer. They think maybe thecomputer was struck by lightningwhile she was on it or something. Idon’t know.

Mrs. Simon starts to cry again. Mr. Simon tries to comforther. The scene moves back upstairs to Andrea. She slowlywalks back to her room and closes the door. Still distraughtover her breakup she lays face down on the bed and criesinto her pillow.

ANDREA(Mumbling)

The whole worlds going to shit.

4 INT. PEEPKONECT HEADQUARTERS DAY 4

Rucker sits at his desk, frowning at IVAN THOMAS, his headprogrammer, who is standing in front of him.

RUCKERI can’t have you going public aboutthis Thomas.

THOMASI don’t want to have to doanything. Everyone’s heard therumors. People are disappearingand they all seem to be peoplewho’ve gotten on your bad side.

RUCKERRumors Thomas! You’re a man who isabove such trifles. Are you not?

THOMASThey can be hard to ignore.

RUCKERTry not to worry about it, I don’tneed my head programmer bothered bysuch nonsense.

THOMASI just want to know if it’s true.

RUCKEROf course it’s not! Have you everheard of anything more ridiculousthan computers killing people?

THOMASI don’t know.

(Shroud enters the room)

RUCKERYou’ll have to excuse me, Thomas.

Thomas looks hesitant, and then leaves the room. Shroudlooks inquisitively at Rucker, who shakes his head, andproceeds to unfriend Thomas on Peepkonect.

5 INT - ANDREAS ROOM 5

Andrea is shown sleeping. There are tissues all over the bedand a few on the floor. The scene moves inside of Andrea’sdream. She is walking down her street. Suddenly you get thesense Andrea feels someone to following her. There are blackcars parked at each corner she turns onto. She startsrunning. The black cars start to follow her. She turnsquickly and jumps over a bush and into a house.

ANDREACaleeeb! (Panting) Caleeeeb!They’re after me!

Andrea runs into Caleb’s room to find him passed out on thefloor, barely breathing. The cracked screen on his computeris shown beside Caleb’s motionless body with the logo ofPeepKonect jumbled across it.

ANDREACaleb! NOOO! CALEEEB!

Andrea awakens, startled from the nightmare. She slowlyrolls over and collects a few of the tissues and throws theminto the waste basket beside her bed. She slowly gets out ofbed and gets dressed.

ANDREAWhat shall the lonely, single girlwear today? (To herself)

(Ringtone sounds)

Andrea finishes putting on the sweater and walks over tocheck her phone.

ANDREAFourteen missed calls?

Andrea answers the phone.

ANDREAHello?

VOICEAndrea, it’s Matt. Listen I’ve beentrying to get ahold of you allnight. Something happened withCaleb’s computer last night and hegot electrocuted pretty bad. He’sin the Norville hospital right nowand the doctors aren’t sure what isup. I’m sure he would want hisgirlfriend beside him right now sowill you come?

ANDREA(Speechless and in shock)

VOICEAndrea? ... Hello?

ANDREAUm.. yeah I’m here. I’ll be rightthere. Thanks for calling Matt.

6 INT HOSPITAL ROOM 6

Andrea is sitting in a chair beside a hospital bed whereCaleb is laying unconscious and unresponsive. Andrea’s faceis tear stained as she talks quietly to Caleb’sparents. Upon hearing the news of the circumstances ofCaleb’s accident, Andrea pales, and quickly excuses herselffrom the room.

7 INT CORRIDOR OF PEEPKONECT HEADQUARTERS 7

Rucker and Shroud are walking quickly down the hallywayunimpeded by other people, until they turn the corner andRucker comes face to face with Ivan Thomas.

RUCKER(alarmed)

Thomas!

THOMASHello sir.

RUCKERWhat are you doing here?

THOMASI’m just finishing up those reportsyou wanted.

RUCKERI...yes, very well.

Rucker abruptly turns on his heel and leaves a confusedThomas in his wake.

(RUCKER cont’d)What is he doing here?!

SHROUDI...I have no idea.

(CONTINUED)

RUCKERHe should be DEAD!

Rucker storms down the hallway back to his office where heturns on his computer. His fingers fly across the keys ashe checks various settings, and finally he logs onto hisPeepkonect account to check his administrator status, whichhe finds is no longer active.

RUCKERYou! Fix this, fix this now, or Iswear to God I will have your neckfor this!

SHROUDI’ll...I’ll call Thomas, I’ll makehim fix this.

RUCKERMake him fix it, and if he refuses,put a gun to his head.

8 INT IVAN THOMAS’ OFFICE 8

Shroud storms into Thomas’ office looking livid.

SHROUDI need you to do something for me.

THOMASWhy should I do anything for you?

Shroud pulls a gun out from the waistband of his pants, andpoints it at Thomas’ head.

SHROUDThis is why.

THOMASGoing to try and kill meagain? Didn’t work so well thefirst time, did it?

SHROUDTechnical difficulties won’t getyou out of this one.

(cocks the gun)

THOMASWhat do you want?

SHROUDI need you to find out why Ruckerno longer has his administratorstatus. It’s gone, and seeing asyou’re the last person to complainabout it, and you designed thewebsite, naturally we came to youfirst.

THOMAS(defensively)

I don’t know anything about that.

SHROUDWe’ll see how much you know.

Shroud pushes the loaded gun against Thomas’ head.

THOMASI’ll try.

Thomas clicks around on his computer looking for theproblem. Suddenly his hands stop moving and he looksnervously up at Shroud.

SHROUDWhat? What did you find?

THOMASSomeone else had the admin status.

SHROUDWho?!

THOMASA girl. Andrea Simon.

SHROUDHow is that possible?

THOMASI don’t know. A virus perhaps,that thunderstorm the other dayknocked out our power.

Shroud turns his back on Thomas and pulls out his cell phoneto relay the news back to Rucker.

RUCKER(over the phone)

Where is this girl?

RUCKEROk, I’m on my way, you stay withThomas, and let me know the secondanything else develops.

SHROUDWhat are you going to do?

RUCKERIntroduce myself to this AndreaSimon, and see if we can’t reach anagreement.

9 INT HOSPITAL COMPUTER LAB 9

Andrea’s face is shown, her eyes moving back and forthacross the computer screen. She types into thesearch..."PeepKonect history" The search engine producesmillions of search options. Andrea scrolls though severaland then hovers over a popular blog site titled, "PeepKonectscandals and conspriacies. Social Networking Kills!" Sheclicks the link.

Andrea reads some of the article to herself. While silentlyreading the rest. Seen in print is the title: PeepKonect’sFounder Luke Rucker killed my uncle, Senator Hanson.(Subheading) Delete Luke Rucker from your account before hegets YOU too!

ANDREAFounder of PeepKonect, LucasRucker, may very well possess asuperior administrative status tohis highly successful socialnetworking site, PeepKonect.Unknown and to the general public,this technology was originallydesigned as a military tactic thatprovides an electrical shockthrough the central nervous system,halting neurotransmittance in thebody, and thus killing its victimsalmost immediately.

ANDREA(Anxiously panting andwide-eyed) This is insane! Buthow could I?

Andrea continues to read the blog entry.

ANDREAMy uncle, Senator Hanson orderedme, only hours before he died, tounfriend Luke Rucker from myPeepKonect. He claimed that Rucker,who by default becomes friends withanyone who has an account, had thepower to kill anyone he saw fit toharm by simply unfriending themfrom his PeepKonect account. Hewarned me that if anything happenedto him to go public with thisinformation so to stop Rucker fromcontinuing these murderous cybercrimes.

Andrea scrolls through the comments of the blog. Shehighlights one that read: "This kid is fucking crazy! Whoever heard of a computer virus that actually kills not onlythe computer but the user as well? I get the dude is sad hisuncle bit the dust but stop telling lies about Luke Rucker.Man is my homeboi!"

Andrea falls silent. She turns away from the computer. Herhand over her mouth in fright as she sheds a quick tear.(Pause) Suddenly it seems an idea has come to her. She turnsback to the computer. Slowly with one eye closed, she logsonto her PeepKonect account.

10 INT. RUCKER’S TOWNCAR 10

A black towncar driven by a chauffeur is seen speeding downthe highway, inside Rucker argues loudly on his cell phonein the backseat.

RUCKERWhat’s going on?!

SHROUD(over the phone)

We’re working on it sir.

RUCKERWork harder Goddamnit! My life isin the hands of a fucking teenager!

SHROUD(shouting at Thomas)

Are you sure?!

RUCKERWhat is it?

SHROUD(still addressing Thomas)

I need to know...yes? Ok.(finally replying to Rucker)

We’ve got a bit of a problem,sir. We’ve managed to get youradministrator status back, but wecan’t take away the girl’s.

RUCKERWhy the fuck not?

SHROUDWe don’t have the authority toeliminate an administrator status,only you do. You’ll have to find acomp---.

(the phone goes dead)

Rucker stares incredulously at his phone, presses thebuttons and tries to restart it. In anger he punches thecar seat and throws the phone out of the window.

RUCKER(to the driver)

I need to find a computer. Now!


Andrea stares blankly at the computer as a warning flashesupon the page. "REQUEST DENIED- account cannot be deleted".

ANDREAOh God, oh God, what do I do?

Andrea combs through her privacy settings looking for aloophole so that she can delete her account. She scrollsthrough several pages until she gets to her generalinformation page. Andrea notices something odd. Below hername in red text is one word, "Admin". She looks at the redword, bewildered, until her eyes flash in recognition.

12 EXT ON THE ROAD 12

Rucker’s town car is seen speeding down suburban roads,running stop signs, until it screeches into the parking lotof a local library. Rucker runs out of the car and racesinto the library.

Andrea is clicking through Peepkonect as fast as she canlooking for the page where she can unfriend Rucker.

ANDREAWhere is it? Where is it?

14 INT LIBRARY 14

Rucker races into the library, pushing past a teenage girlknocking her books to the ground, he races to the end of theaisle of computers where he pushes a man out of it.

MANHey buddy, what’s your deal?

RUCKER(grips the man’s arm tightly)

This is my seat now.

The man walks off looking angry, while Rucker logs onto theInternet, eyes flashing dangerously.


Andrea frantically navigates to Rucker’s profile looking forthe correct link. Her heart races.

16 INT LIBRARY 16

Rucker types in the IP address, and gets to the Peepkonectlogin page. He looks frantic as he types. He types hisusername in and types in his password.

17 INT HOSPITAL LIBRARY 17

Andrea finds the unfriend link at the very bottom ofRucker’s expansive page, she clicks it, and a notificationpops up, "Are you sure you want to unfriend LUKE RUCKER?"

Andrea pauses, and clicks "YES".

A moment later Rucker successfully logs onto his Peepkonectpage, and he smiles triumphantly, he grabs the mouse to findAndrea’s page, and an electric shock rips through his body,causing a power surge which makes the entire library godark.

19 INT HOSPITAL LIBRARY 19

Andrea pauses, unsure if there was any effect. She goesback to her settings page, and tries to delete her accountagain. A notification pops up "Are you sure you want todelete your account?" Without hesitating she presses "YES".And the screen goes to a blank Peepkonect login page. Shesighs in relief and goes back to Caleb’s hospital room.

20 INT CALEB’S HOSPITAL ROOM 20

The next day Andrea goes back to visit Caleb in thehospital. She is sitting in a chair next to Caleb, who wokeup overnight.

CALEBI’m so sorry baby. I didn’t meanit.

ANDREAThanks.

In the background the TV is on, and a news report isplaying.

REPORTERLast night Luke Rucker, CEO ofpopular social networking site,Peepkonect, was pronounced deadafter being rushed to a hospitalafter being electrocuted in a locallibrary. Officials...

Andrea glances at the TV, listening to the report. Shesmiles to herself, and turns back to Caleb.

Citizen Film Preliminary Research

When we first sat down to pitch ideas we looked at ideas we wrote for ’50 Sentence Story Ideas’.

We came up with a lot of leads but few stuck out as legitimate movie ideas, one of them was

Lauren’s pitch about a person who when she de-friends people on facebook they go missing. We

added a lot to the original idea, mainly the addition of Rucker, until we got to the final product

you read now. When coming up for aesthetics, the group like the idea of have these two

different worlds, of the evil corporation and high school, clashing together in the final cash

scene. We learned a lot during this process and are very happy with the final product.

ANDREA

Andrea his is an intelligent and independently thinking high school girl, we reflected this in Andrea’s clothes by having her wear bright and bold colors. Giving her bright sky blue pants and a yellow shirt makes her pop out from the often homogenizes background of high school fashion choices. We chose to gave Andrea a track jacket to show that she is down to earth and not afraid to get down and dirty to beat the bad the guy as she does in the final scene.

RUCKER

Rucker’s character is a sleek and hot headed executive and his wardrobe reflects that. A black pin stripe suit with a matching black tie give the character a uniformly colored sleek and sly look. The French cuffs and wide knot of the tie show that Rucker has a taste for expensive and flashy possessions. The black color of the suite, tie and shoes also make Rucker blend in with his dark office making it seem as if him and his work are one. His numberless watch shows that when given the choice Rucker will also pick style over functionality.
