DESCRIPTIONThe EU has boldly set out its ambition to be the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 with 8 priority areas to achieve a European Green Deal. The sustainable green transition of our cities will deeply transform the living conditions of millions of citizens as well as future business models, supported by the European Commission’s Apollo-inspired mission to achieve 100 climate neutral cities by 2030.

Many cities have been successfully implementing plans integrating smart and innovative solutions, under the calls for Smart Cities Lighthouse projects in the H2020 Framework. Onwards, City, Regional and National governments, citizens, and companies will work together to mobilise multiple levers of change simultaneously and generate viable pathways to change involving citizens, companies, policymakers and investors. A sense of urgency and pragmatism is required to accelerate innovative solutions already in play and to take their deployment further & faster.

The question is… How do cities contribute to EU emissions reduction targets and what are the most effective initiatives getting us there?

A collective of 22 cities in 20 countries has collaborated to answer this question in this session with a close look at a system change approach to achieve climate neutrality. The session will provide participants with successful examples of solutions contributing to Green Deal objectives, with a strong focus on new efficient and clean cities on regard on the energy generation and consumption as well as sustainable urban mobility. Attendees will hear headline assessments of current trajectory, quick take-aways from a city perspective and a concrete case study from each city speaker.

This session is designed to give actionable insights to audiences from cities of all sizes, geographies and economic situations. Our goal is that every single person in the room leaves the session with a fresh idea to take home. This session is targeted to development agencies, EU and national policymakers, urban planners, energy companies and authorities and mobility management and delivery organisations in particular. Because citizens and businesses are also central to the solution, speakers will include success factors for industrial partnerships, creating investment opportunities with acceptable risks and activating local communities and businesses in meeting our sustainability challenges.

AGENDA – DETAILS [1/5]

Challenges cities are facing due to the energy transition

Skopje - EIT Climate-KIC

• Skopje is on a road to achieving the mission of transforming itself into an innovative, green and sustainable city for inhabitants and visitors, serving as a testbed in EIT Climate KIC project "Healthy Clean Cities" and led by SmartUp Social Innovation Lab, as their enabler of change. Developed as a pilot project, SkopjeLab aims to improve governance by introducing new engagement techniques that enable more meaningful collaboration between various stakeholders, including enterprises, academia and especially connecting the citizens and the public administration to address the city’s most pressing challenges.

AGENDA – DETAILS [2/5]

New high-performance district

Antalya

• In Antalya, Turkey, despite the rapid growth in urban migration, the local government is aware of the need to protect the critically important natural, ecological and historical endowments of the city and its hinterland, make the city a smart service hub of the region, modernize the agricultural sector and maximise resource efficiency while diversifying the tourism sector. The development of a smart service sector and efficient infrastructure based on high speed communication and transport networks has been pointed to as key to the sustainable and climate friendly development of the city. The governmental mandate for Urban Transformation has been adapted by Antalya to develop new smart districts.

AGENDA – DETAILS [3/5]

Building retrofitting in a district and replication of this solution based on co-working with building owners

Milano

• Milano would present the co-design process involving citizens and owners that led to the identification and implementation of deep retrofitting interventions on five private buildings (more than 29.000 sqm and 1.000 residents affected by the initiative) with an average energy saving of 60%.

AGENDA – DETAILS [4/5]

V2G bi-directional charging ecosystem

Utrecht

• Utrecht’s living lab for smart energy management is transforming the way energy is managed, while driving a sustainable mobility revolution. Through a fully bidirectional ecosystem, combining electric cars, renewable energy, and storage in vehicles and stationary batteries, Utrecht has created a virtual power plant that reduces stress on the grid, while unlocking the financial value of flexibility in supply and demand of energy. It enables the city to have 25,000 electric cars by 2025, boosting the city's goal to be energy-neutral in 2030. In Milano the number of e-vehicles grew 3.5 times in three years to around 3,441 in 2018, of which 2091 e-cars, due to combination of fast and normal charging points and innovations in parking sensors. What are similarities and differences in the approaches of Utrecht and Milano?
