Dear Readers, Did you know that Mr Joe Average has approximately...

7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms in their body!Our minds cannot comprehend that enormous number but God can. He made us, and Genesis 1: 26-27 tells us that He made us in His image. We are more than mere hunks of moulded dust; there is an inner essence, the place where we reflect the image of God the most - or not! - and that is our soul. Our soul is the place where we can know the deepest joy but also the most profound distress and in it all God knows us and hears us and loves us. He longs for our souls to be restored - literally a movement back to the point of departure - He longs to heal us, to revive us and to transform us, saving us from the damage that sin does to the soul, to our emotions and to our well-being. A Psalm of David expresses the desire for God’s restoration: Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me (Psalm 51:10 NIV) There is not one of us who does not need to utter this prayer at least at some point but perhaps every day. Here is a response that may help you. May you know God’s glorious blessings in your life as you continue to seek Him - there is no one else worth seeking!

He restores my soulHe restores my lifeHe restores my mindHe restores me. When I have lost my focus on HimWhen I have failed to stay by HimWhen I have let my mindWander away from Him He restores my soulHe restores my lifeHe restores my mindHe restores me. Though I have hurt Him with neglectThough I have left Him out of lifeThough I have failed Him through my fearAnd forgotten His ways

He restores my soulHe restores my lifeHe restores my mindHe restores me.

Transform my mind, my fear and guiltSet me free from unrest and frustrationAccept my repentance as I turn from all harmRevive and return me to being so close to You O restore my soulO restore my lifeO restore my mindO restore me.

Tribute to Kath Elliot

During these last weeks since Kath’s Promotion to Glory, many peo-ple have said various things to me about her, ‘What a gracious lady;

she was so kind and thoughtful; she was so neat and precise.’ One of the things that stood out for me was her thankfulness to all and to God. On the Tuesday afternoon when I visited her in the Hospital, the day she went to be with the Lord, after I prayed with her and Linda, she said to me, ‘thank you for coming’, even though she was very poorly.

To everyone who has supported us we wish to express our sincere thanks for your prayers and practical help during our

recent difficult times. The good news is that I am now feeling much better.

regards,

Carole and Cyril Nixon

Kath was born in the City of Portsmouth in 1921, not too far from the Cita-del, in Landguard Rd, and there she spent her early years. Not easy years, as they were not for many in those days, her dad dying when she was quite young. Her mother, then a widow, had to try to make ends meet.

At 14, Kath went to work in service for a Doctor and his wife in Festing Grove. Really hard work for very little pay. She gave what she earned to her mother. What she learned there she followed though her life; if you shared with her in her home, she gave you the best.

When the war came, she went to work at Airspeed, making parts for Tanks, it’s hard to imagine this. She had never earned so much money. She was able to give her mum a pound and her mum cried. Again, we see her thoughtfulness.

Kath knew Peggy’s family from her early years. She enquired how Peggy’s brother was, away at war, and the mums did some matchmaking when Doug came home, which led to Wedding Bells. Kath had borrowed a wedding dress, but she saved up and bought the bridesmaids new dresses from Belle’s. Those of us who lived here will know that it was a high class shop in those days. This began a life of love and devotion to each other with the blessing of Linda and then grandchildren.

It was when she lost Doug that Kath started coming to share with us here at the Army. I am sure God used many people to bring her into our com-pany. She came to CAMEO and Home League, sharing in the Café and on Sunday. There was, for Kath, a deepening of faith and love for God. In these years she became a much loved member of our church. She would have said, ‘I can’t do much’, but I know she did. She brought others and visited those who were ill and lonely, some in homes, some in their own home, and she shared with them her love for Jesus and ministered His love and grace with tenderness and second-mile ministry until age took its toll.

God bless you Kath! Thank you for your love and friendship until we meet again in His presence. GS

Lord, release that latent passion

Which in me has dormant lain;

Re-create a deep compassion that will care and care again.

Needy souls are still my mission, sinners yet demand my love;

This must be my life’s ambition, this alone my heart shall

move. (SASB 463v3)

Gracious Lord, Thy grace apply, both to save and sanctify;

All my life wilt Thou control, calmly ordering the whole,

That the world may ever see Christ, and only Christ, in me.

health or on our ‘continued prayer’ list on page 6.

Y.P. Anniversary

On Y.P. Anniversary Sunday, Southsea Young People took part in a happy day of joyous praise to the Lord.

YPSM Cheryl Morris led morning worship, where Sunday Club and Primary children contributed with the leading of congregational songs, prayers, Bible readings and a song entitled ‘Our God is a great big God’. The Junior Band contributed ‘Wonderful Lord’ and the Singing Company, ‘Silent Love’.

Café Church was the evening theme, led by Children’s Worker/Singing Co. Leader Amanda Streather with ‘Talent Night’ by the young people. This included a percussion solo, vocal solos, vocal duet, puppet display and spoken comedy items. New to worship was the very first singing out by the recently formed All Age Choir (Amanda Streather) with members ranging from 4 years to retirement. Major Mary Wolfe (CO) thanked everyone for taking part in the day and special thanks to the Y.P. workers for their ongoing diligent work with the Young people. T.M.

USA Western Territory Staff Songsters

SOUTHSEA CITADEL was blessed and privileged to welcome the USA Western Territory Staff Songsters (S/L Neil Smith) on the first

leg of their UK Tour, named ‘Love’s Call’.

The Songsters, with their rich choral sound, presented the love of Jesus through their exemplary singing, prayers, drama presentations and testimonies.

As a prelude to the Saturday festival, crowds gathered to listen to the Songsters open-air ministry in Southsea’s shopping precinct, with the evening festival filling the hall to capacity, as the Songsters presented a scintillating programme of music.

There were contrasts such as ‘Boundless’ (William Booth; Kevin Larsson) and ‘Amazing Grace’ (John Newton, Arr Camp Kirkland). Matthew Woods vocal solo ‘Bring Him Home’ from Les Miserable was sung with passion, and Piano accompanist, David Dunford’s pianoforte solo had every eye trained upon his hands as they flew across the keyboard in exciting and exhilarating style. As a finale, the Songsters concluded with a rousing and remarkable rendition of ‘William Tell’.

9 Citadel Scene

USA Western Territory Staff Songsters

Major Mary Wolfe (CO), on behalf of the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, presented to the Staff Songsters a plaque of the City crest and Songster Leader Neil Smith presented to the Corps a framed picture of the Staff Songsters.

Sunday worship, led by Executive Officer Lt. Col. Victor Doughty, was deeply spiritual with challenge, blessing and uplift in equal measure and with a passion for Christ and the Holiness of God.

‘His Provision’ (John Gowans; Ivor Bosanko) brought a wonderful presence of the Holy Spirit that lingered and ‘The Old Rugged Cross’ was gently and prayerfully received. The Worship group, led by Major Lisa Smith brought intervals of praise with instrumental backing. The host Corps Junior music sections supported.

In the afternoon, as a finale to the weekend, the Staff Songsters and Southsea Songsters united in ‘God and God Alone’ and ‘Blessed Assurance’. And finally, with rich fellowship enjoyed, the Senior Band bade farewell to our American friends with the march ‘Rosehill’.

This Time Tomorrow

Life happens! And, as Christians, every part of our life counts. So we want

to introduce to you all TTT. It’s a simple thing to do but it brings a range of benefits that will enhance our worship, our prayer and our fellowship.

Here’s how it works: During a Sunday meeting the leader will ask one of our congregation just three or four questions about what they will be doing THIS TIME TOMORROW, the challenges and the joys and how we can pray for them.

What each one of us does during the week is important and we want to celebrate this and also encourage each one of you in your daily living, that who God has made you to be and what you do is valuable to Him and to our fellowship. The things we share with each other, and the prayers we pray will bless us all richly. So get ready...TTT is here! LS

Cathedral MusicCathedral Music - where are we now?A talk given by Dr John Rutter C.B.E. at Chichester Cathedral, June 2013 (by Doug Garland)

John Rutter (pictured opposite) is probably the best known composer of choral music and studied for 7 years at Cambridge

University. His compositions blend tranquility, emotion and inspiration, lifting drooping spirits, binding broken hearts and bringing heaven a little nearer. His strong clear voice held us spellbound for some 40 minutes as he related his own experiences in composing and music making.

11 Citadel Scene

He chose a 1926 recording of York Minister Choir to illustrate the standards of that day; the choirmaster was an eminent musician, but, John added, “the butcher, baker and candlestick maker were in the back row!” And so, on through the war years, little progress was made in choral music, as the war brought its disruption to all but the largest places of worship.

John then spoke of the changes in popular music and remembered how Mick Jagger used to be a choirboy but it didn’t seem to do him much good. However, these changes in pop music gave a wake-up call to the established church - music could move the masses.

An influential group, including John, discussed the way forwards, recognising that music has always been a part of worship and that it was desirable to maintain high standards. John spoke very little of his own part in these discussions but the several hundred compositions now available speak of his own response - many are recorded by the Cambridge Singers whom he directs and conducts, and they include carefully chosen verses of Scripture, always uplifting and reaching far beyond the established church in use.

I was impressed by the man himself; sure of his sense of purpose, keen to maintain all Christian standards, and all expressed with remarkable humility.

Corps Finances

During the Give to Grow campaign earlier this year, an undertaking was given to publish figures relating to the income

and expenditure of the Corps.

In the financial year ending March 2013, the following figures apply: Income £111,926.15

This figure includes cartridge (envelope) giving, collections, donations and other income, but not special events.

Expenditure £78,217.93

This includes officer and personnel costs for the Corps, premises (including quarters), administration, mission resources and centage (a tithe paid by the Corps to The Salvation Army). It does not include figures relating to the Nursery or Community Programme.Corps Secretary

Now it’s only 5 months away!! However, if you want to be sure of securing the seat of your choice, it would be advisable to

book as soon as possible with Yvonne (023 9273 8349).

As we’ve said, we shall be ‘tweaking’ the programme here and there in an endeavour to keep things fresh for performer and listener alike, but the ingredients remain essentially unchanged viz St John’s College Junior School Choir, Portsmouth High School Nursery along with Dr Russell Rook as compere... our charity will be Naomi House, in their work with children who have cancer.... but, for all that’s the same, we are hoping and believing for a first appearance from the children of ‘Noah’s Ark Nursery’.

Please continue to pray about this so that the ideas and plans may come to fruition successfully.

Carols At The Kings

16 Citadel Scene

After fighting the elements for these past two weeks, we look forward to starting our sea-front witness this coming Sunday.

Someone has called this place our cathedral of the open-air. Not being able to physically take part this year, I hope to be an attentive, sitting-down listener. What an amazing thing that people see us as they walk along the prom, sometimes stopping, looking, taking a photo, better even taking a War Cry. Above all many realize that we are believers in the living God. Theymay say to themselves, is there a living God? We declare “ God-reality” as we attend to the meeting.

This week the following verse came up in “The Words of Life” that my wife and I read together. In the midst of a long list of unbelieving and bad kings of Israel comes one who is only 25 years of age, but he stands out because he simply believes in God. (2 Kings 19;14/19) Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: O Lord, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. K.G.
