    Recovering a Lost Enable Password

This appendix describes how to recover a password that you configured with the enablecommand(enable password).

Note You can recover a lost enable password, but not a password that you configured with the enablesecretcommand (enable secret password). This password is encrypted and must be replaced with a newenable secret password. See the "Hot Tips" section on Cisco Connection Online (CCO) for information onreplacing enable secret passwords.

Follow these steps to recover a lost enable password:

Step 1 Connect an ASCII terminal or a PC running a terminal emulation program to the Consoleport. For more information, see the Cisco 805 Router Hardware Installation Guide.

Step 2 Configure the terminal at 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit.

    Step 3 Reboot the router.

Step 4 From user EXEC mode, display the existing configuration register value:

    Router> show version

Step 5 Record the setting of the configuration register. The setting is usually 0x2102 or 0x102.

Step 6 Record the break setting.

Break enabledbit 8 is set to 0.

Break disabled (default setting)bit 8 is set to 1.

Note To enable break, enter the config-register 0x01 global configuration command.

Step 7 Do one of the following:

If break is enabled, go toStep 8.

If break is disabled, turn the router to STANDBY, wait 5 seconds, and turn it to ON

again. Before the terminal displays Boot......, press Escapeor Control-C. Theterminal displays the ROM monitor prompt (boot #). Go toStep 9.

Note Some terminal keyboards have a key labeled Break. If your keyboard does not have a Break key, refer tothe documentation that came with the terminal for instructions on how to send a break.

Step 8 Send a break. The terminal displays the following prompt:

    boot#

Step 9 Reset the configuration register:

    boot# set ios-conf=142

    Step-by-Step Procedure

Follow these steps in order to recover your password:

    1. Attach a terminal or PC with terminal emulation to the console port of the router.

    Use these terminal settings:

o 9600 baud rateo No parityo 8 data bitso 1 stop bito No flow control

The required console cable specifications are described inCabling Guide for Console and AUXPorts.

    2. Use the power switch in order to turn off the router, and then turn the router back on.

    3. Press Breakon the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the routerinto ROMMON.

If the break sequence does not work, refer toStandard Break Key Sequence Combinations DuringPassword Recoveryfor other key combinations.

    4. Type setat the boot#prompt, and record the current value of the configuration register.

    5.boot#set6.set baud =96007.set data-bits =88.set parity =none9.set stop-bits =1

    10. set console-flags =011. set mac-address =0050.7307.C32912. set unit-ip =10.200.40.6513. set serv-ip =255.255.255.25514. set netmask =255.255.252.015. set gate-ip =10.200.40.116. set pkt-timeout =817. set tftp-timeout =1618. set boot-action =flash19. set file-name ="c800-nsy6-mw.122-10b.bin"20. set watchdog =off21. set prompt ="boot"22. set ios-conf =0x210223. !--- The ios-conf variable sets the value for the24. !--- configuration register. Record this value.25.26. Type set ios-conf = 142at the boot#prompt.

Note: The best setting is 142 if the Flash is intact. If the Flash is not installed or is erased, use141. With this setting, you can view or erase the configuration, but you cannot change thepassword.

    27. Type bootat the boot#prompt in order to initialize the router.

The router reboots, but ignores the saved configuration.

    28. Type noafter each setup question, or press Ctrl-Cin order to skip the initial setup procedure.

    29. Type enableat the Router>prompt.

Once the Router#prompt appears, you are in enable mode.

    30. Type configure memoryor copy startup-config running-configin order to copy the nonvolatile

    RAM (NVRAM) into memory.

Important:Do nottype copy running-config startup-configor write. These commands eraseyour startup configuration.

    31. Type show running-config.

The show running-configcommand shows the configuration of the router. In this configuration, the shutdowncommand appears under all interfaces, which indicates all interfaces are currentlyshut down. In addition, the passwords (enable password, enable secret, vty, console passwords)are in either an encrypted or unencrypted format. You can reuse unencrypted passwords. Youmust change encrypted passwords to a new password.

    32. Type configure terminal.

    The hostname(config)#prompt appears.

    33. Type enable secret in order to change the enable secretpassword. For example:

    34. hostname(config)#enable secret cisco35.36. Issue the no shutdowncommand on every interface that you use.

If you issue a show ip interface briefcommand, every interface that you want to use displays upup.

    37. Type config-register . Where configuration_register_settingiseither the value you recorded in step 2 or 0x2102. For example:

    38. hostname(config)#config-register 0x210239.40. Press Ctrl-zor endin order to leave the configuration mode.

    The hostname#prompt appears.

    41. Type write memor copy running startupin order to commit the changes.42. Type reload.

Once the router reloads, the configuration register value changes from 0x142to 0x2102.

    Sample Output Example

This section provides an example of the password recovery procedure. This example was created with aCisco 803 Series Router. Even if you do not use a Cisco 803 Series Router, this output provides anexample of what you should experience on your product.

Note:After you copy the configuration file from NVRAM to RAM, you can perform one of theseprocedures:

Password recoveryPerform this procedure if the enablepassword (which is in plain text format)is configured.

Password replacementPerform this procedure if the enable-secretpassword (which is inencrypted format) is configured based on how the password is last configured.

Note: In order to check the format in which the password is configured in the router, use the showrunning-configcommand, and look for enable passwordorenable secret passwordin theconfiguration. For more information, seeExample of Enable Password RecoveryandExample of PasswordReplacement.

    Introduction

This document explains how to recover Cisco 2500, 3000, AS5100, and uBR900 Series Routers stuck inROMmon (rommon#>or >prompt).

    Prerequisites

    Requirements

To recover a router from ROMmon mode, the router should be physically accessible and should have aterminal connected to the console port. Recovering a router from ROMmon is not possible by telneting toany of the interfaces. You must know how tocopy the Cisco IOS software image from a TFTP server to therouter.

    Components Used

The information in this document is based on the:

    Cisco 2500 Series Router

    Cisco 3000 Series Router

Cisco AS5100 Series Universal Access Server

    Cisco uBR900 Series Router

The information presented in this document was created from devices in a specific lab environment. All ofthe devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If you are working in a livenetwork, ensure that you understand the potential impact of any command before using it.

    Conventions

For more information on document conventions, see theCisco Technical Tips Conventions.

    Verify the Configuration Register Value

The first thing that needs to be investigated is why the router is booting up in ROMmon mode (indicated bythe "rommon # >" or ">" prompt). Determine whether the cause is due to the change of the configurationregister value, or a corrupted Cisco IOS software image.

If the router has a valid Cisco IOS software image, then simply changing the configuration value register to0x2102 will recover the router. The procedure for this is explained below.

    1. If the ROMmon prompt is ">", type the following at the ROMmon prompt:

    2.>o/r 0x21023.>i4.System Bootstrap, Version 11.0(10c)XB2, RELEASE SOFTWARE5.Copyright (c) 1986-2003 by cisco Systems6.2500 processor with 16384 Kbytes of main memory7.8.F3: 10021772+224116+562960 at 0x30000609.10. Restricted Rights Legend11.
