From the Directors’ Box

Good afternoon and a warm wel-come to Cuthbury to our visi-tors from Cirencester. We

extend our hospitality to the visitingofficials, players, staff and supporters, and hope you enjoy your time with usand have a safe journey home.I’ve mentioned previously how tight thebattle for the play offs is and the 3 con-secutive defeats we’ve suffered sincethe turn of the year has demonstratedthis as we’ve slipped away to 10th inthe table but, to quote a footballing cli-ché, there is still plenty to play for.At this time of year injuries, suspen-sions & unavailability can start to bitemany teams and we’re no differentwith our modest squad being thinlyspread at present. Matty continues tojuggle his resources and as a boardwe try to help where we can and you’llhave seen elsewhere details of 2 sign-ings we’ve made. On the subject ofnew signings, I must pass on a specialthanks to local firm Loadpoint Preci-sion Engineering for a generous spon-sorship deal that helps to make newsignings possible …and thanks also toSteve Rimmington – the Loadpoint em-ployee & development squad kitman –who encouraged his boss to supportthe club!

Elsewhere we are hosting a fans forumin the club house on Monday 29th Jan-uary at 7.30 where the Board & Mattywill provide an update and field ques-tions. It’s been a while since we lastheld a forum so feel free to come alongand ask any burning questions youmay have! Finally, I also want to congratulateLouis Kelleway who started his 100thgame for the club last week at Yate.Louis is of course a graduate of ouryouth teams and is a great illustrationof what we’re all hoping to see more ofover the coming years …young localtalent playing for the youth teams be-fore moving into the developmentsquad and onto the first team. Hopeful-ly we’ll be congratulating more youthgraduates in the years ahead.Enjoy the game.

From the Dugout

Good afternoon everyone, andwelcome to our league game vCirencester Town, I would like

to welcome the players, staff and sup-porters of Cirencester to Wimborne fortoday’s game. Our recent results have been disap-pointing, but we must remember whowe have played in those games. Itshows us how far we have come to bedisappointed to lose our last 3 gamesagainst such strong opponents. Tolose away against Salisbury, hereagainst Evesham, and away at an inform Yate is certainly no disgrace.I have to look at our performances inthose 3 games and take a lot of heartfrom them. Our performance at Salis-bury was outstanding. Against Eve-sham we were 3-0 up with 20 minutesto go with every one from Gerard toBurbs performing heroically, to thenlose 4-3 and have Luke sent off was ahuge blow to us, in what was 3 pointsdropped. Yate last Saturday was anexcellent first half display, possibly thebest we have played for a while. Thenearly second half a great chance to go1-0 up when Toby was through, tothen give two goals away cheaply wasagain hurtful.Every team goes through blips in theseason, our last real blip was back in

late August, early September when welost 3 games on the run.Let’s remember that we now enter atime of injuries and suspensions thatare hurting us, but we have to digdeep and as a squad overcome thistogether. There are still lots of gamesto go, and I know the players are de-termined to finish the season as highas possible. We welcome Paddy Hester back to theclub after his excellent season with uslast year, and we also welcome Char-lie Kendall to the club. Paddy is availa-ble on Tuesday for our trip to Taunton, and Charlie is in the squad today.Sam Davidson is doing well and webelieve he may only be a couple ofweeks away from training; Sam Bay-ston continues his rehab along withWill Prior; Scott and Luke serve theirbans today so the squad will be put togood use this afternoon.I hope you all enjoy the game.

Best wishes,

Matty

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to this after-noon’s league game againstCirencester.

After doing so well through Novemberand December, we’re still waiting for ourfirst points of 2018. We played well anddeserved something at Salisbury onNew Year’s Day, we threw away a 3goal lead in the last 20 minutes againstEvesham here two weeks ago, and thenlast Saturday we were punished at Yatefor not taking our chances when wewere on top in the first half. I talkedabout Salisbury in my last notes, so I’llfocus on the Evesham and Yate games. For the last three seasons Eveshamhave been a class act. And it’s a toughtask playing against them. Back in Sep-tember we’d won at their place with twogoals by Toby in the last 15 minutes.Their away form has been better than athome in the league. We did well to keep them out in the firsthalf. Stef and Louis cleared off the line, and Gerard made two brilliant saves. From one of those we went straightdown the other end to score our secondgoal. We were pleased to go in at thebreak two up, and then Toby increasedthe lead early in the second half whenhe scored from a pen. Even then wehad some really good chances to scoremore.Their three subs had a big impact, andwhen they scored with about 20 min-utes to go, the whole momentum of thegame changed. We didn’t keep the ball, and they just kept coming back at us. Atfirst you’re thinking of three points, thenyou just want to hang on to one, and itwas a real killer when they took thelead. Games with such a big turnaround

don’t come along too often. Many of youwill remember the 5-4 against Haleso-wen which went our way. It’s not goodbeing on the wrong end of one of thoseswings. We knew how Yate played, and we hada game-plan for last Saturday. We cre-ated some great chances in the firsthalf, and with a bit of luck we’d havecome off at the break in the lead. Wehad another great chance at the start ofthe second, but then the gamechanged. Our boys in midfield were out-numbered as their big no. 4, Peare, dominated, and we started getting over-run at the back. Their first goal was ourmistake, and the second came from an-other mistake and then a lucky ricochet. After that Yate were well in control.Near the end a pass back to me bob-bled and went between my legs as theirlad closed me down. I turned and pulledhim back, which the ref deemed a redcard offence, so I won’t be playing to-day. It’s a real blow as I want to play inevery game.Charlie Kendall came on in the secondhalf. He’s been well-schooled at AFCB,is quick and strong in training, and Ithink you’ll like watching him.Cirencester came down from the Pre-mier Division this season, and they’vegot some good players. Toby got thelate winner at their place in November,so the boys will be going all out to dothe double today.

Enjoy the game.

Scott

Wimborne Town 3 Evesham United 4 - 6 Jan - Graham Dunn reports

In an action-packed game of free-flow-ing football, Wimborne surrendered a3-goal lead as Evesham's Robinsscored 4 times in 16 minutes to stealthe points from the Magpies.Evesham’s attacking intent was clearfrom the first few minutes as Powellfired over before Stefan Penny had toclear their next effort off the line. At theother end, Luke Burbidge created acentral opportunity for Toby which Eve-sham keeper Sawyer easily saved. However, on 12 minutes Wimbornetook the lead. Coming in from the right,Burbidge’s shot was parried by Sawyerbefore Toby netted the rebound. As play flowed from end to end, MattyOldring blocked an effort by Fahy, be-fore Gerard Benfield brilliantly savedHaskayne’s shot through a crowd. Lou-is Kellaway then fulfilled his defensiveduties with a header off the line.On 17 minutes Wimborne doubled theirlead. Luke Holmes played a ball overthe Evesham back-line for Toby whocame in from the right to beat Sawyer. At this time Evesham’s defence had noanswer to the home team’s attackingprowess. The only surprise was that nofurther first-half goals were scored. When a team has a two-goal lead, thenext goal is often critical. Quick feetfrom James Stokoe gave Toby space toclaim it, but he shot over. However,Wimborne had to wait just 8 second-half minutes to claim that third goal. Aquick free-kick found Toby on the left ofthe penalty area, he beat his man butwas hauled down. He took the resultantspot-kick himself. Sawyer guessed rightbut could only push the ball onto thepost and into the net.

Evesham manager Paul Collicutt made3 separate substitutions which ener-gised the visitors who took control andswarmed forwards at every opportunity. The almost inevitable goal came on 70minutes when Liddiard rose highest atthe far post to score from a corner.Six minutes later, as the home sidestruggled to get the ball clear, captainMann returned a defensive header withinterest from the edge of the box to re-duce the deficit to one.Remarkably, on 80 minutes the scoreswere level. Haskayne firing a screamerpast Benfield from 25 yards.Wimborne desperately tried to get backinto the game, but the momentum waswith Evesham. On 86 minutes Mannbeat the wall and Benfield from a free-kick just outside the box on the left.Still Evesham flooded forward, andBenfield had to make a brilliant tip-overto prevent a fifth.Things got worse for Wimborne whenLuke Holmes was shown a straight red.The home supporters were left wonder-ing how a Halesowen-like comebackhappened in a feast of football.Star man: Groundsman Brian Sibley -for preparing a playable pitch.

With Luke Holmes unavailable, manag-er Matty Holmes brought Loyd Cole intothe starting XI, pushing the versatileBilly Maybury into midfield. Louis Kella-way, 20, made his 100th start. On the good-looking surface, May-bury’s diagonal ball gave Luke Bur-bidge a first opportunity to run at hisfull-back. As play flowed from end-to-end, Cole made an important slidinginterception. On 6 minutes Mayburyagain sprayed the ball wide. This timeStefan Penny’s cross was met by asoaring James Stokoe whose headerflashed inches wide of the upright. On 14 minutes, Stokoe cleverly teed-upMaybury on the edge of the box, but hislow shot also went wide. With both sides playing the ball on theground, the game became chess-likeas the teams probed for openings. On19 minutes Toby Holmes had his firstsight of goal but keeper Rivers saved. From Cole’s cross from the left, Stokoehad his shot blocked and then put therebound wide. At the other end thebusy Tooze crossed from the by-linebut his inviting cross flashed across theface of Gerard Benfield’s goal. The visitors exerted sustained pressureon the Yate goal. Jack Lovell, Burbidgeand Penny combined to force a corner,Stokoe had two more efforts blockedand saved, Maybury’s drive from dis-tance was deflected for a corner, andHolmes just failed to control Burbidge’sthrough ball. But Yate’s goal remainedintact, before the home side had thebetter of the closing minutes of the half.Early in the second period, Lovell andStokoe set-up Holmes. His shot beatRivers, but also the far post. And thatwas as good as it got for the visitors.

On 50 minutes, Tooze pounced on aweak defensive back-header from along ball and beat Benfield. Gaining inconfidence, Yate went on to dominatethe game. Peare’s drive from a free-kick was blocked by the defensive wall, and a cross-shot from wide on the rightwas palmed over by Benfield, beforeYate doubled their lead on 60 minutes.Moving the ball quickly in mid-field, aricochet came to Anderson, he roundedBenfield and set-up a tap-in for Brooks.Wimborne brought on Ben Walker, andnew-signing Charlie Kendall, but madelittle impression on the home back-line.Maybury’s 22 yard free-kick, over thebar, being their best effortYate continued to cause problems. On85 minutes, a ball skidded under ScottArnold’s boot, and he turned and pulledthe forward over. Being the last man, referee Barlow brought out his red card.Fortunately, he decided that the offencetook place a foot outside the penaltyarea. Wimborne’s wall stood firm.If Wimborne had taken one of theirgood chances when the score was 0-0,it could well have been a different re-sult. But on the day the Magpies fin-ished a well-beaten side. The search for a first point in 2018 con-tinues.

And it looked bleak whenWill Hawes put Shortwood 3-0 just 14minutes from time. But the Peacocksroared back, with a fortunate cross-cum-shot from Ross Staley reducing the defi-cit to two in the 78th minute. The Big Interview - Louis Kellaway - who made his 100th start for WTFC at YateWe asked Louis to look back on those 100 games.

Tell us about your first game for WTFC?It was as a sub against Hamworthy Utdin the DSC on 28 Oct 2014I came on about 60 mins when we were1-0 up. Soon after, George Webb gotcarried off injured (after we used 3 subs)and Griff got sent off, so we were downto 9 men. It was a bit of a tin hats job butwe eventually won 1-0. It was a greatexperience of men's football. Specialthanks to Cussy for giving me my debut! What can you remember of your firststart? Away to Taunton on 1 Jan 2015I didn't expect to start so was shockedwhen the team was announced. Thegame seemed to pass too quickly to re-member too much but we went 1-0 upbut eventually lost 2-1 due to 2 lategoals. I had mixed feelings at the end asit was great to make my full debut butsad to lose! But again gave me a greatinsight of non league football and wasthe first time playing in front of such abig crowd so was a good feeling!Which other teams did you play for?I've been at Wimborne since U13sthrough to now and been lucky enoughto play for some great managers! Fromu13s to u18s I played for Nick Hutch-ings, and also had a spell with the de-velopment team under Ed Taylor.Which has been your best individualperformance for the First Team?I don't really think I've stood out mas-sively in any game, but I might go lastgame of last season vs Slimbridgewhere I got a goal and MOTM from thegaffer which is always nice. And your most memorable goal?I don't score a lot so there wasn't manyto choose from! I'd probably go the goal

vs Salisbury for the occasion, nice toscore at a ground like that in front of afew people, shame it wasn't the winner!Best WTFC game you’ve played in?Hereford away! Great game in front of2000+ people! To go 1 nil down after 30seconds against the run-away leagueleaders then come from behind twiceshowed that we can match any team onour day! Thought everyone played out oftheir skins that day. I think Toby mighthave scored a good penalty that day...Favourite ground to play on?Hereford was good, but I always lovestepping out to play at the Cuthbury asyou're always given a warm reception. What’s your football career ambition(s)?I always joke that I'll stay at Wimborneall my life because it's so handy tohome, but if we keep playing like we areI don't see why I wouldn't stay! What’s your advice to youth players whowant to emulate you?I think there's other players to emulateinstead of me haha! But it's important tokeep plying your trade wherever that isas a youngster, and see where thattakes you!

Thanks for your time, Louis. We look forward to your next 100.

North Leigh kicked off on a very coldevening and played the ball back to-wards their ‘keeper Connor Thompsonas Ben Whitehead charged forward topress. It looked a bit tight so Thompsondecided to come out to meet the ball butslipped over just outside the penaltyarea leaving Whitehead the simple taskof running the ball into the unguardednet. 1-0.As the fifteen minute mark approachedNorth Leigh began to string some pass-es together and push forward but suf-fered a further setback when BenWhitehead headed home a corner kickfrom the right. 2-0.Despite this further setback the visitorscontinued to work the ball forward andthe game became ‘end-to-end’ and justbefore the interval North Leigh openedtheir account when a ball into the boxfrom the right flank found Ben Green

With his back togoal he dummied left then turned rightto sweep the ball inside the right postpast an unsighted Matt Wiezcorek. 2-1.North Leigh started the second half verypositively and around the mid-pointWieczorek was required to make a cou-ple of saves with Roger James particu-larly prominent on the right wing.As the half wore on Cirencester beganto keep the ball better and cause theirvisitors some concern and as the gameentered the final ten minutes they re-gained their two goal cushion as aWhitehead header looked to be goingbeyond the right post Tommy Andersondarted forward to prod it home. 3-1.The home side finished the game verystrongly and an excellent save fromThompson denied Whitehead his hat-trick in the final minutes.

Jody Bevan’s prodded finish proved thedecisive factor in sinking the sorry Mag-pies, who have now lost six out of theirpast seven league games. But defiant Magpies boss Cuss has notgiven up on the Magpies claiming a top-five berth. “As long as there are enoughpoints to play for we are determined togive it a go,” Cuss told the Daily Echo.Bevan sealed the victory for the high-flying visitors just three minutes aftercoming off the bench as a second-halfsubstitute. He found space inside thearea to nudge home a scruffy effortwhich nearly got stuck in the mud as itdribbled past keeper Jason Harvell.Cuss added: “It was a soft goal. He(Bevan) didn’t really hit it well and itwent through the legs of our defender,

while Jason was unsighted. I didn’tthink they deserved it at the time.A Mark Gamble free-kick and Ian Oliv-er’s early strike, that whistled past thepost, were notable highlights for thehome side but Cuss’s men lacked acutting edge to test the abilities of visit-ing goalkeeper Glyn Garner.

“We’ve lost by the odd goal on toomany occasions. These are the type ofgames that show why they (Cirences-ter) are at the top of the league and weare mid-table.”

pletely different” this season after pick-ing up 12 points – a total Magpies hadnot reached by Boxing Day last term.Cuss told the Daily Echo: “We are play-ing without the pressure of being downat the bottom and have a much morecompetitive squad now. We have 18lads who I consider to be first-teamplayers who are all fighting hard forplaces. We end up with disappointedplayers every week. It has given me anice headache.”Magpies: Ackerman, Arnold, Cole, Pep-rah-Annan, Brian, Blake, Gill (Sains-bury, 69), Hubbard, Jeffes (Smith, 79),Davidson (Kemble, 79), Webb.Unused sub: Costello.

Cirencester Town FC was formed in1889 and played amateur football in theCirencester & District League, Chelten-ham League and the GloucestershireNorthern Senior League. In the late ‘60s Cirencester joined theGloucester County League, movingfrom there up to the Hellenic League in1969. During that time they had theirfirst national cup run, reaching the 2ndround of the FA Amateur Cup. Theywon their first major piece of silverware, taking the Hellenic First Division Cham-pionship in 1973-74 to reach the Pre-mier Division. Following a subsequentrelegation the modern phase of devel-opment was established, with theirSmithsfield ground being improved.Runners up to Cinderford Town in ‘90-’91 put the club back in the HellenicPremier, and they also picked up theHellenic League First Division Chal-lenge Cup for the first time as well asthe Gloucestershire Senior AmateurCup (North). Premier Division Runnersup ’91 – 92 behind Shortwood United inthe Premier Division, they also lost 2-1to Shortwood United in the GFA Chal-lenge Trophy Final, but bagged thatseason’s Arthur Shipway Cup.Season 1995-96 was the start of thenew era. In partnership with CirencesterCollege, the club began the ground-breaking Football Academy pro-gramme. Developing rapidly, first underDave Hockaday and when he moved asYouth Team Manager to Watford FC,followed by Steve Lowndes, the Acade-my have been National College Cham-pions in ’97 and in ’98, five timeswinners of the English Schools FA U19Colleges Cup since 1998, and BritishColleges Trophy Champions 4 timessince ’97. The youngsters have regular-

ly reached the latter stages of the FAYouth Cup as the last remaining non-league club in that competition and in2008-09 reached the third round properbefore losing to Sunderland at the Sta-dium of Light. The success of the Acad-emy has had the knock on effect ofproviding CTFC with new blood anddeveloping talent.Off field, a long planning process led tothe development of the CommunityClub phase led by Chairman Steve Ab-bley and implemented over 3 years byBusiness Manager Anna Kocherhan. Insummer 2002 Brian Hughes succeededRay Baverstock as manager. At thesame time the club, having invested theproceeds of the sale of Smithsfield inthe Corinium Stadium at Kingshill, moved into their new faciltity and re-named as “The Centurions”. This devel-opment was followed in November2004 by the opening of The Arena, astate of the art full size indoor trainingfacility. We have now been awarded theFA’s “Charter Standard CommunityClub” status and this summer we re-ceived the 2006 Gloucestershire FAAward for “Charter Standard Communi-ty Club of the Year”, which was present-ed to Steve Abbley by Sir Geoff Hurst. The Junior section of the club, with itsphilosophy of “football for all” and whichhas in the region of 300 members, is ofvital importance to the club and with athriving Ladies team in addition to theMen’s first team, the club really doesprovide a valuable service to the localcommunity. With the Arena hosting ap-proximately 70 teams in its 5-a-side and6-a-side football leagues, and the Clubbeing a thriving private and corporateevent venue, the future of the Club isassured.

In 2003-04, Cirencester Town battledhard with Champions Redditch Unitedand runners up Gloucester City to finishthird in the Western Division and joinedthe newly restructured Southern Foot-ball League Premier Division, where, intheir first season, they finished seventh. In May 2006, after four highly success-ful years and having raised expecta-tions at the club, Brian Hughes resignedas First Team Manager to be replacedby Neil Hards. Neil had taken a yearout of football after his achievements atWinchester City where they gained“back to back” promotions and won theFA Vase in 2004. Unfortunately, despitesome good early performances, theteam lacked the necessary consistency, and finished in the relegation places. However the club was later reprievedfrom relegation after a number ofchanges were made to club allocations. In May 2007, former players, AdiViveash and Paul Hunt, took over asManager and Assistant Manager re-spectively. However things did not goaccording to plan and the club were rel-egated to the South and West Division.Manager Adi Viveash left the Centuri-ons to take up his role at Chelsea andBrian Hughes again took up the hotseat as First Team manager. The 2009– 10 season proved to be a very suc-cessful one with the Developmentsquad winning the league in their firstseason and the first team gaining pro-motion via the play-offs.Manager Brian Hughes managed theclubs first season back in the PremierDivision in 2010-2011 and the club fin-ished 13th. Unfortunately 2011-12 sawthe heartbreak of relegation and ourfirst year back in the South & West divi-sion saw us finish a respectable 10th.

2013-2014 saw the club have its mostsuccessful season ever gaining auto-matic promotion back to the SouthernLeague Premier by clinching the title onthe last day of the season to beatMerthyr Town to the championship. Bri-an Hughes worked with a small squadwhich managed to overturn a 9 pointdeficit and clinched the title by winningthe last 7 games of the season.2014-2015 proved to be a successfulfirst season back in the Southern Pre-mier following the promotion the previ-ous season, narrowly missing out on aplay off place by only 4 points and fin-ishing in a respectable 8th place. Theclub also marked the season celebrat-ing its 125th Anniversary which sawmany former players and supportersjoin the celebrations the season.A second season in Southern LeaguePremier had the Centurions finish in15th place and a good FA Trophy runsaw us reach the 1st round proper forthe first time our history, narrowly losingto Truro City in a replay 1-0 at theCorinium Stadium. Brian Hughes con-tinued to push the club forward in theright direction and also had a personalmilestone completing over 600 gamesin charge of Cirencester Town FC.2016-2017 saw changes at the helmafter a poor start Brian Hughes was re-lieved of the manager’s job and CharlieGriffin was installed as his replacement.Despite a huge effort, we yet again suf-fered relegation, losing on the final dayof the season to Kings Langley in amust win game to have any chance ofsurvival and needing results elsewhereto go our way which unfortunately didnot happen.

Swindon Supermarine chairman JezWebb admitted the decision to partcompany with manager Dave Webbwas one of the hardest decisions hehas ever had to make. - 16 Jan 2018The Marine chairman though believes itis the “right decision at the right time”for the club and admitted the side’s re-cent form ultimately cost Dave Webbhis job. Two points from four matcheswhich culminated in a 5-0 drubbing athome to Bideford on Saturday, provedcritical for the Supermarine boss whohad led the side for over five years.Three appearances in the Division OneSouth & West play-offs were the high-light of Dave Webb’s tenure and evennow the club are just one point adrift ofthose places this season.

Jez Webb hailed his former managerdescribing him as a “tower of a man”and being responsible for lighting hispassion for non-league football.“He was shocked but he was a tower ofa man and took it on the chin. His reac-tion was exemplary. He is a great man.“One thing that he did do was build mylove and interest for football even morethan it was because of the way he con-ducted himself and his passion.“It’s all about results, points, tables andform. Nobody has a personal gripe withDave. People just thought it was timefor a change.”“We need to take time to make a newappointment and whether it takes twoweeks or two days it doesn’t matter solong as we get the right man.”

A very pleasing result and perform-ance from our young DevelopmentTeam. All of the players involved wereaged 16-18 years old.We have seen good progress in thesquad in the last few weeks, with somenew players joining the team. The boyswere eager to put in a good perform-ance.Wimborne did not start the game verywell, and were 1-0 down in the 1stminute with a lovely strike from theedge of the penalty box from a Portch-ester midfielder. It didn’t take Wimborne too long to getback in the game though, MidfielderJosh Hall played a well weighted passthrough to Striker Aidan Shepherd whocalmly chipped the ball over the on-rushing Goalkeeper to make it 1-1.This calmed Wimborne’s game downand they started to play some reallyproductive football. The Wimborne de-fence of full backs Josh Blake andFrank Herrington along with Centre-Backs George Smart and Ollie Os-borne were very disciplined, and madeit very difficult for the Portchester For-wards to create any clear-cut chances.Goalkeeper Sammy Thompson wasonly forced into a few relatively easysaves. Wimborne managed to go 2-1up before half time from a clever chipfrom Robbie Bradley.Just after half time, Portchester man-aged to get an equalizer from a closerange shot, to make it 2-2. Wimbornequickly responded with a well-placedshot from a tight angle from AidanShepherd, making the score 3-2. Thehard working Midfield pairing of Robbie

Bradley and Josh Hall, along with crea-tive Midfielder Adam Holmes were ableto get a foot-hold on the game and be-gan to dictate the tempo. An excellent run and calm finish fromWinger Dan Hunt, made the score 4-2to Wimborne. Striker Rob Okumu thenmade it 5-2 showing his electric pace, before slotting the ball past the Goal-keeper. Wimborne then made a coupleof substitutions bringing on Central-Midfielder Ben Knight and Winger LiamMurphy-Parry, who both soon got intothe game, showing good work rate tohelp maintain a comfortable score lineat this point.Yet again Portchester responded withanother well struck shot from the edgeof the penalty box to make it 5-3. Wim-borne then made their final substitu-tion, bringing on Midfielder JakeCarswell, who immediately showed hisclass on the ball. Wimborne were notfinished and managed to make it 6-3after good link up play between RobOkumu and Dan Hunt, ending withHunt finishing from close range.Wimborne then were able to see outthe game with some good game-man-agement.Overall a good win for the young De-velopment lads, and hopefully they cannow carry this type of performance intothe upcoming games.Wimborne Team: Sammy Thompson,Josh Blake, George Smart, Ollie Os-borne, Frank Herrington, Josh Hall,Robbie Bradley, Rob Okumu, AdamHolmes, Dan Hunt, Aidan Shepherd.Subs: Ben Knight, Jake Carswell, LiamMurphy-Parry.

WTFC wanted to have an Under 14steam for the 2017/18 season. I agreedto be the manager of the team.We had a signing on night at Cuthbury, when Terry and Gus explained theethos of the club, including the mainaim of 'Player Development', what theplayers and families could expect, andwhat the club expect from them. I wasintroduced to the players and families, and at the end of the evening someboys happily signed for WTFC.Our first training session was at the endof July. During the next few weeks, Ter-ry and I worked hard and signed a fewmore players. The players come fromdifferent local clubs. For our first matchin Dorset Youth Division 3 at the begin-ning of September we had 11 players.Although we lost our first league game, the boys played well in their first matchtogether. Our opponents were lastyear’s Division 1 team. Since that gamewe haven’t lost a league game, and theboys are improving all the time.At the end of October we playedagainst our good friends from Malta -

Zabbar St Patricks FC, which was anamazing experience for all the boys.We now have a full squad (16 boys). Inour last league game before Christmaswe played our reverse fixture to theteam we played first and we won, but itis all about learning and their develop-ment which is the most Important thing. We have had a good run in two cupcompetitions. Our last youth cup gamebefore Christmas we lost, but we arestill in the league cup after finishing topin our group. The boys should be very proud of whatthey have achieved and as a team thathas only played together for 4 months, they have done very well.I would also like to thank the parents fortheir support and their encouragementthat they give the boys on match days.Currently we are second in our league. The boys must continue to enjoy thegame as they are doing. Our aim is tofinish in the top two places, which willmean promotion at the end of the sea-son, which the boys really deserve.

Wimborne Town F.C. Youth SectionWTFC Under 14s Half Season Report - Gus Phillips (Youth Chairman) comments

Our Under 14s have been anothergreat success story this season, espe-cially as we didn't have an U13s teamfrom last season. To try and start a com-pletely new team at U14 age group is amassive challenge and the hours andhours that both Adrian and Terry gave tomake this happen has been tremen-dous.

How the squad has progressed alreadythis season is a real credit to both ofthem, and naturally to our U14s playersand very supportive families. To watchthis new squad play against the MalteseTouring team was a joy and againproves what a great club WimborneTown FC is - Keep up the great workUnder 14s.

How did you get involved with WTFC?I wanted to get some more first-handexperience alongside my degree stud-ies and thought combining it with mylove of football, Wimborne was perfect.I wrote a letter to the club volunteeringmy services within media and got aphone call from Tony a few weeks lat-er. Here I am.What are your first impressions of us?I love it! Everyone is so friendly andclearly care for the club. I don’t thinkyou get the same sort of spirit betweenclub and community at higher levels. After my first game I thought it was bril-liant to see the players eating chips inthe clubhouse amongst the fans. What's your sporting history?I used to be very good at athletics, wonmost the sprinting and jumping eventsat sports days as a kid. Was never thatdecent at basketball despite my heightbut was once a pretty good hockeyplayer and probably should have pur-sued it as my sport teacher was in-volved in SportEngland and rated mehighly. I’m probably best at goalkeep-ing however, I was keeper for myschool teams and am playing 5-a-sidein Bournemouth on Sunday evenings.Who is your favourite football team andplayer - and why?Not that I’d like to admit it at the mo-ment but I’m a Stoke City fan. Some-one has to be and you can’t exactly callme a glory supporter! My hero was ourDanish keeper Thomas Sorensen whoI met once at a friendly game at Yeovil– my signed shirt from that day isframed at home. He was such a greatathlete and known for his penaltysaves, a trait I can’t claim to emulateunfortunately.

What was the first game you went to?I’ve seen pictures of me as a 2yr-old atthe Brit (Stoke ground) for games inthe old Second Div but don’t rememberthe games. The first one I rememberthough was Southampton away (it waseffectively home for us) we lost 1-0 andI didn’t see the goal because I was en-grossed in the match program! What are you studying at Bmth Uni?BA (Hons) Television Production. I’mspecialising in camera, lighting, andsound design. What are your career ambitions?I’d love to be able to write and producemy own television programmes andfilms, not having to worry so muchabout budgets, risk assessments andaudience demographics. To work infootball media would be great so hope-fully this is the first step.Four favourites: Artist / group - either Red Hot Chilli

Peppers or Fall Out Boy. Film - The 2008 Batman film ‘The

Dark Knight’ Food - Sunday roast, any day of

the week Tech gadget - I should probably

say my DSLR camera but my Mac-book is what I use for most things.

And finally - a little-known factDespite being 6’ foot 4”, I’m actuallyscared of heights. I was in Paris justafter Euro 2016 and we went up theEiffel Tower. Though everyone saysdon’t look down, I found looking upfrom the middle tier to the top made mefeel pretty nauseous. I was alright andmade it to the top but queuing for 40minutes gives you a lot of time to pon-der your choices.

Have you ever stopped to wonder whatwould happen to Non-League clubsacross the country if they didn’t haveany volunteers? If the turnstiles had no operator? If thecar park had no stewards? If the pro-grammes had no sellers? As you’re reading this, look around you. It’s highly likely that you’ll be staring atthe same faces standing on the terracesand sitting in the stands that you seemost weeks. It’s the same for the loyalvolunteers that keep Non-League clubsgoing, but what will happen when they’reunable to continue their roles?I refer back to an excellent column bythe long-serving Northern PremierLeague chairman Mark Harris in a re-cent edition of The Non-League Paper. He said: “The biggest challenge for Non-League football is bringing in more vol-unteers.“If I lined up all 68 of my chairman in theNPL and gave them a choice of either£10k in cash or 20 new volunteers, veryfew would actually take the cash be-cause it’s the volunteers that get you themoney. It’s the volunteers that make thecommunity programme work.”Harris goes on to say that he believes aco-ordinated volunteering initiative isrequired to bring fresh blood into thelower levels – and he’s spot on.

Non-League clubs couldn’t survive with-out their volunteers, who have pledgedan incredible amount of hours into therunning of their clubs. But volunteerswon’t last forever and a new generationmust now be coming through.Non-League is all about people and thatis a recurring word. The National League system must find away to engage communities within theirlocal football clubs. By doing so, morepeople are likely to want to get involved. The next step is having a clear volun-teering pathway in place so that peopleknow how and who to approach at theirclub. The correct training should be in placeso that a volunteer is familiar with thepossible roles they could be fulfilling at afootball club. There will be people now who would liketo volunteer at their local team but areunsure how to go about doing so. It canoften be difficult to approach a club on amatchday, not because staff aren’t will-ing to help but rather that they are busy.A structure can help eradicate theseproblems. If you can, put yourself forward to helpout your club. It could only be for a cou-ple of hours each week but it will certain-ly be appreciated – and you might justenjoy it too!
