In Memoriam

AIMO LEIKAS (29) circus performer, died at Hartola, Finlandon Sept. 10th. He died instantlywhile performing his Russian rou-lette act when a live shell en-tered his gun chamber. He hadbeen doing the act about a year, selecting six bullets from a boxof assorted live and dummyammunition.

Death Bill DiesThe man who was responsible

for California's tough laws con-trolling exotic-type animals hasa different opinion when it comesto the state's wild burros. Sen-ator Peter Behr and Michael Wor-num, both of Marin County, Cal.,recently sponsored a bill thatwould give the Fish & Game Com-mission authority to issue per-mits that would allow killing orcapture of the wild burros.

The bill was defeated witha vote of 25-13, two short ofthe 27 votes needed. The bill wassupported by the Calif. WoolGrowers and the Sierra Club. Itwas opposed by the United StatesHumane Society.

Sen. Behr says the burrosmultiply fast and therefore are"eating themselves out of theirhome." However, Sen. W. W.Stiern, of Bakersfield, won hisfight against the bill and said,"I can't understand why someonewould shoot an animal that wouldwalk up to you and lick yourhand." ,

Burros were introduced toCalifornia from North Africa bySpaniards who used them for packanimals. They formed herds duringthe late 1880's when they werereleased or escaped from miners.

In 1939, a state law waspassed to protect the desert-roaming animals when it was lear-ned they were being killed fordog food.

Ronald Mann, executive assistant manag-er of the Oakland Hyatt House, has alwaysbeen fascinated with clowns. To give you anidea just how deep that fascination goes,Mann has been collecting paintings ofclowns for many years. He has also devotedconsiderable years to Ihe study of theirhistory, nomadic existence and their habits. It isn't hard to imagine Mann's joy when thegreat circus hit town this past week. Clowns, clowns and more clowns including headclown Ron Severini. and right next door to

him at the Coliseum. And how does aclown-lover get nextto so many clowns? For Mann, it washardly a dif f icul ttask. Among themany things he knewabout clowns was thatthey rarely have anopportunity to dine ina plush restaurant. So, he talked to RonSeverini and invitedhim to bring a few of

his colleagues over to the Hyatt House fordinner in the popular Hugo's restaurant.

Coincidonlally, I just happened to be inHugo's when Severini, along with his wife.Sandy, and five or six other clowns, walkedin. They all dressed for the occasion, in fullcostume and makeup, to the delight ofRonald Mann. Everyone in the place, includ-ing those in the lounge, were treated to ahalf-hour impromptu performance as befitsthe best traditions of the circus clown. Ron's"singing dog and Sandy's musical saw wereadded a t t rac t ions . They didn't do all of thisto play and sing for their supper. It wasdone out of appreciation for the dinner offer.Mann, I'm sure, would have been thrilledjust to chat with them through dinner muchless getting an impromptu performance.

The story, however, doesn't end here. Before the circus left town the clownsreturned to the Hyatt House for an encoreperformance. And then, they did somethingthat was probably a dream come true forMann. They invited him to appear with themin their final performance at the Coliseum. If some of the ushers thought they wereseeing an extra clown that they were. It wasRonald Mann in costume and made up justlike the rest of his new and appreciativefriends. That he is now an honorary clowngoes without saying.

S&G RevisitedFirst caught and reviewed

in June, Sells & Gray Circus wasrevisited on Sept. 3, at Leetonia(Ohio) where the compact circusplayed to good crowds. Showingminimal signs of normal wear andtear Sells & Gray is now headedSouth towards its rumored earlyclosing in October.

The performance remains asfirst-rate as when reviewed inthe spring with many pluses andonly one demerit - a prop crewthat tends to hamper the tempo ofthe program.

The girls in the openingaerial ballet come on smiling andhave synchronized their web rou-tines. Head-balancing trapezestar, Miss Dana Novotny, has in-jected that much-needed pizazzinto her entrance; performersmove from the back door to ringwith speed, and Gary Thomas is tobe commended for his wonderfulprogress with the two elephantact, which is beautifully assist-ed by the chili-pepper personal-ity of the attractive Vilma Lor-enzo.

The Evy Karoly Family hashad several set-backs - the firstwhen young Mark suffered mononu-cleosis and was out of the showfor almost two weeks, and second, when a stud horse attacked an-other in transit, chewing out itsshoulder as though the horse hadbeen mauled by a lion. The horseis recovering but will be out of

by BILLY BARTON

the show for the balance of theseason. The Karolys are now usingtwo dressage horses in that dis-play instead of the originalthree. Young Mark, on the otherhand, is well and back in actionwith his excellent trampoline andprincipal riding turns.

The lot at Leetonia was atight one, too small for the sideshow which was side-walled. Thespool wagon blew the arrows, ar-rived late. Despite this disrup-tion the show was set and readyin plenty of time for its 4t30p.m. matinee.

The George Matthews Circusperformers, visiting on an un-scheduled day off, pulled on to asmall lot adjacent to that ofSells & Gray's, which was separ-ated by a stream. Here, AlfonsoMagana gave S&G a publicity boostwhen he unloaded the three G-Mbulls and let them frolic in thewater. S&G people lined up on oneside of the bank, G-M people onthe other, while circus fanssnapped pictures and townspeopleflocked to the bridge, disruptinglocal traffic.

G-M people who enjoyed theS&G visit included: Inge and Ro-bert Williams (visiting theirson); Herbie Weber; Marcella; EdRussell; Harry Ross; Prince Naj-vez; Alfonso Magana, Lu Ann Ja-cobs; Bobby Davis and Terry Kir-wald.

A Strange IdeaWhen Sells & Gray Circus ar

rived at Sayre, Pa. for their en-gagement on Aug. 27th, city offi-cials said the horses could notperform and would not be allowed .on the lot. The reason given wasthe officials believed horsescarry tetanus in their hoofs andsince the lot was directly inback of a school they didn't wantto take any chances.

The show has hour highschool horses and two barebackhorses owned by the Karolys. Theshow also has six ponies used forthe children's pony ride.

Miss Karoly says she hasnever run into such a problem be-fore and her horse acts have ap-peared all over the world.
