THE VOICE OF VISION AND VALUES...by Ted Johnson

From Volunteering to Leadership, Film Festivals to Building a Better World, and Community Reads to our newest

staff member, “Where to begin?” I’ll begin at the end. This month marks my 10th year as Assistant Library

Director here. This issue of our newsletter symbolizes so many aspects of our journey together over the past

decade. Volunteers transform communities one life at a time by giving of themselves to help people learn to read,

find the books they need, prepare for a job, and so much more. Leadership is a critical skill in our culture, hence

our profession. Those skills are caught more than they are taught, so we strive to “see more” and “see before”

others as we collaborate with many community partners to chart a clear course ahead in the context of library

services. That course begins with our youth, so we seek to show them how to build a better world and they in turn

will create movies to share that world with others. Finally, communities that read together grow together. Staff

adds value to this effort, especially with “Kirk” onboard. Such diversity creates strength, joy, and a bright future.

Community Reads: The Fire Line

Four years ago, the community experienced a devastating tragedy when the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots lost their lives to the Yarnell, Arizona fire. This year the Prescott Valley Public Library was awarded a Community Reads grant where community members are encouraged to read the same award-winning book, “The Fire Line: The Story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots and One of the Deadliest Days in American Firefighting” by Fernanda Santos and participate in related programs. The purpose of this grant is to support the goals of civic engagement, encourage reading, and promote Arizona literature. The Prescott Valley Public Library specifically chose this book to serve as a memorial to the 19 heroes.

Please join us in the following June programs:

Book Discussion and Signing with the Author: Friday, June 16 @ 6-8 in the Crystal Room

Moderated Panel Discussion: Saturday, June 17 @ 1-3 in the Auditorium

Panelists will include the author, family members, first responders, and the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Trail crew members. Peregrine Book Company will be selling copies of the book at both events. Both programs are free and no registration is required. If you have any questions, please call Michele or Jenny at 928-759-6196/6188.

Leadership...by Casey Van Haren

During the week of May 7th through May 11th, I had the privilege of attending the Arizona State Library Leadership Institute with 20 other

librarians from around the state. Our facilitator was Maureen Sullivan, a widely recognized leader and educator in the library profession. I stayed at the Historic C.O.D Ranch in Oracle, Arizona, and spent the days in sessions with our mentors, who are well known library movers and shakers in Arizona. We were able to discuss issues that affect our libraries and receive feedback and tools on how to handle situations appropriately; be it political, staff, or learning how to effectively communicate with our stakeholders. This was an amazing experience, and I now have 20 other colleagues I can call on for advice and guidance.

Volunteering is Fun by Lynn A McNeill

Have you ever wondered exactly what a volunteer

does at the Library? We make an effort to match

experience, skills and interests with positions.

Volunteering is more than shelving books and

DVDs. Tasks include: working the Drive-in Window

and back room check-in/sorting, assisting at events

and classes, administrative duties, assisting at the

circulation and help desks, and delivering books to

homebound patrons. We will have a new volunteer

position as Information Specialist to welcome pa-

trons and give directions at the front entrance.

If you are interested, please contact Lynn McNeill at

928-759-6191 for more information.

REMINDER: Our Volunteer Appreciation Day is

Thursday, June 8th from 10am to 2pm in the Crystal

Room.

Build a Better World…by Anne Pieszak Don’t forget to register for the Children’s Summer Reading Program beginning Thursday, June 1, online at www.pvlib.net, or in person at the Children’s Desk. The program is open to all children 0-11. This year’s Children’s Summer Reading Program features weekly take-home activities. Each activity is designed for families, friends, and/or small groups working together to “Build a Better World.” The instructions for the first activity are included in the free bag you will receive when you sign up for Summer Reading. Pick up instructions for a different age-appropriate activity each week. Whenever you complete an activity (any time before July 29), submit proof at the Children’s Desk. Then type the secret code that you will receive into the box on your dashboard to earn points (and a badge) towards your 1600 point goal. We supply the ideas. You supply the fun!

And the best part is we will be building a better

world together!

So if you know a creative teen, let them know! There will be awards and prizes in 3 different categories. All films should be turned in by Friday July 14 for review.
